San Diego Dish Network spot beam for local channels

08 January 2010 - 11:14 PM

A “friend” has Dish from his old address in AZ. He doesn’t get locals because he’s outside of the Phx spot beam. Anybody get San Diego locals through Dish Network? What would make him really happy is if locals could be gotten as far south as Ensenada. I’m in Puerto Nuevo myself.

So how far south can you get San Diego local channels through Dish network?

Springs, shocks, and alignment needed in Rosarito area. Any recommendations?

15 September 2009 - 03:57 AM

I have to get these things done, my 4runner is like driving a paint shaker. Well, not that bad of course, but it needs to be done, these roads are spinally challenging. I have the springs and the shocks, so I just need the labor. There are a few places that I plan to inquire, but if anybody knows somebody who can do the work at a fair price that would sure save me some hassle. Sometimes people do a good job and you want to send business there way, so I figured I'd ask for that reason.

I went to get the shocks today in El Cajon, and was reminded how nice the roads were in the states. BTW, if anybody needs suspension components, shox.com is located in El Cajon! What luck! Figured they'd be in Nebraska or something. They don't have a showroom, they are mainly internet sales based, but their prices are the best I've found anywhere. Nice guys too!

People wanting cash to watch your car? Help backing out?

11 September 2009 - 05:23 AM

So I was in Puerto Nuevo today, and this guy said he watched my car for me, implying he wanted a tip. I saw the guy before we ate, and he pointed to where I parked, but as far as I know I did not agree to have him watch it. I did not pay him anything. Was I in the wrong here?

What do I say to avoid feeling obligated to tips for watching my car, or for help backing out when there is absolutely no traffic? I don't want to be rude, but I don't need somebody to watch may car, or to help me back out, or anything like that. I don't want to disrespect the culture either though. At the same time I don't want to be a peso dispenser for unneeded and unwanted "help". If it's customary then I can get used to it. I don't imagine many locals pay for such things though, but I could always be wrong.

Thoughts? If my view is rude, please let me know, I will not be offended, I'm just trying to learn the culture.

Should I take my old truck down to Baja or sell it in the US?

05 August 2009 - 06:32 AM

So I have this old 4x4 Ford truck that I have been rather attached to, but it’s a real beast.

Initially I planned on selling it because I cannot get full replacement coverage on it like I can in the states, and here in AZ I barely drive it. If it were to get stolen in Baja I would be really, really bent, much more so than if I lost a Baja bug of similar value. (same issue with insurance due to age) I’m sentimental I guess. My first car was the same year and body, but it was a 2wd. If it were stolen in that states I would at least get replacement value, easily 5-7K, which would go a long way towards drying the tears. It’s not a fear of Baja thing, it’s a fear of no insurance thing.

My wife is hell bent on selling it, she thinks it’s an eyesore. She clearly has no appreciation for the classics. My biggest reason for rarely driving it here was the heat, and the fact that it is a beast to drive, there‘s no getting around that. But it’s got a cool factor that just can‘t be denied.   cool.gif

I’ll be living in either Rosarito or Puerto Nuevo, and I will have a garage. Aside from the hassle of getting it there (it won’t fit on a car trailer, I‘d have to store it up here and drive it down in November-too hot before then) I wonder if it would be worth taking with me? Had a hell of a time trying to sell it because of the economy. Somebody told me it might be worth more down there, but I don’t know about that.

It’s 72 F-250 with a 360 FE block with a Holley 4x4 4 barrel carb, headers, and 4 speed with granny. Stock suspension with 35” tires. Manual steering, no AC.

I should be able to get 4k for it here. 2 years ago I was offered $7,500 but I had no intention of selling it at the time. Yes, I’m still kicking myself on that one…

Opinions please! Would you keep it or sell it? I have a 4runner, so it won’t be filling any particular need, other than fun, and maybe helping friends move stuff.

Coming from Phoenix, would going through Tecate be faster?

25 July 2009 - 09:01 PM

Looking at the map, it looks like going through Tecate might be faster when coming from Phoenix via the I-8 to get to Rosarito/Puerto Nuevo area. Does anyone have experience taking this route? Are the roads crazy? I will be moving down and may take this route, any opinions about this idea? My concerns are about the roads and whether there are any major grades? Border wait times? Thanks for the help.
