Siesta Inn
Blvd Justo Sierra 899
USA 1800 426 5093
MX 01 800 026 6466

Nice hotel, stayed there a couple times when I was a Mexicali Newbee

Just called while writing this post as was quoted 2 prices. One was only 49 dollars which is a steal for this hotel and the other price was 65 dollars.
Not sure if the 49 is a promotion but i remember spending around 50 or so a few years back.
Pampas is within walking distance and there is also a nice Chinese restaurante close by as well.
They also have their own restaurant right next door to the hotel called Chalet which has a nice breakfast buffet and is reasonably priced.
number is 568 2001

Hotel Regis

Blvd Benito Juarez 2150
Tel 686 566 3435
If you want a cheap hotel room and value for your money try this hotel. They advertise some pretty cheap rates from 30 to 50 dollars a night and the location is nice. It is right across the street from Hotel Lucerna

Mexicali, Baja California Mexico 21270
Phone (686) 564.7000
Reservations: 1 800 LUCERNA

One of Mexicali's finest hotels. Did you ever hear the expression you get what you pay for? Well here you get exactly that. Rooms start at 100 dollars a night and once in a while they run weekend specials for 80 a night but what you get in return is a Resort style hotel with everything you could want. A large security wall surrounds the whole complex and they have 3 different sections to this giant hotel. They have the Towers hotel located to the left of the office and then near the pool and Italian restaurant they have a 3 story section of rooms and also bungalows to round out this place. 2 large pools 3 bars, 1 dance club 3 restaurants.
Very good security with 2 or 3 guards on at a time 24 hours a day.

I have stayed here 3 times and i always find myself coming back. Their service is great and the place is huge!! They could hold a marathon within the complex!! They have a piano bar and dance club which gets packed and has a live band on Thursday Friday and Saturday. The LA CAPILLA Bar is the place to be if you’re into a Cheers like atmosphere and it will remind you of a small Ochoas (TJ). Come to this dance club located in the hotel if you like to party and dance with beautiful ladies. This place gets packed quickly and has a capacity for around 50 to 60 people.

LOS PORTALES Cafeteria
This place has the best breakfast buffet in Mexicali period. If I remember it was 10 dollars and the amount of fresh fruit is amazing. They have all kinds of dishes here from Machaca to Omelets and try the pigs in a blanket.

EL ACUEDUCTO Restaurant
You got to try this place and bring a date, she will enjoy it smile.gif Had a cheese filled chicken (sorry I forgot the name of the dish) for around 10 dollars. And the flavor was simply irresistible!!! Appetizers are great and run around 7 dollars and up and main course are 10 to 20 dollars.

MEZZOSOLE Restaurant.
This place deserves a reward! It is an Italian restaurant with authentic oil to go with your bread. We always ask for more bread!!! The dishes are very good and reasonably priced. The atmosphere here is wonderful as well, Look on the ceiling at the beautiful artwork!
One night after coming home from a dance club it was about 1230am and the place was closed and they were cleaning up. Well they cooked me up a pizza and delivered it to my room in about 15mins!!!!
Talk about service. Wait there is more. My first time staying here I ordered a sausage pizza and they took about 40 mins. Well they sent up free soda and 2 slices of Pie as well as a sorry gift. I told them to be sorry more often smile.gif
I normally stay right above this restaurant.

Yes this is all within the Hotel Lucerna, is sounds like a small town -lol
It may cost a little extra but it is worth it

Crown Plaza
Blvd. López Mateos & Av. de los Héroes 201 Centro Cívico
(686) 557-3600 / fax (686) 557-0555
MEXICO: 01-800-0265123
USA: 1-800-2-CROWNE

Expensive rooms but one of Mexicali's finest hotels. Not like a resort as in the Lucerna but close to it.

Expect to pay around a hundred dollars a night. Great location near the center of all the action.

There's a Crowne Plaza at the corner of Lopez Mateos (the main drag from the Mexicali I border crossing) and Los Heroes. Looks spiffy (and expensive) but I have not stayed there.

There are a number of decent motels of roughly the quality of a Motel 6 in the neighborhood where Lopez Mateos meets Justo Sierra. Simple amenities like a Coke machine, a pay phone and a newspaper rack, but the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are clean.

If you're brave, like your accomodations autentico and don't mind the occasional cucaracha, there are small, older (and ridiculously cheap) motels on the west side across the Rio Nuevo, from the generally clean and friendly La Fogata, on (I think) San Luis Potosi near H. Colegio Militar, to the tiny, cheap and not-so-clean Motel Maya on Guanajuato at the corner of (I think) Chilpancingo. The sign says "El Mejor Servicio" -- the best service... ask the family of cucarachas who live behind the mock-Philippine mahogany dresser.

Two nice budget hotels I stayed at in Mexcali downtown, near the border crossing.

Motel Reforma
625 Reforma Avenue
(686) 533-6831

Across the street is:

Hotel San Juan Capistrano
646 Reforma Avenue
(686) 552-4104

Both are about $30 for two people. Located East of Blvd. Lopez Mateos.

There are lots of budget hotels located West of Lopez Mateos, but they are dumps.

Motel Reforma is great! All basic amenities, including cable TV for $25 when I stayed 3 years ago. I guess now its $30. That is still a bargain.

I will check out San Juan Capistrano next time I go.

Being a big city over one million people, Mexicali is worth a visit.
1) visit the 'old town,' including Chinatown
2) nightclub district along Ave. Rio Cajeme, on the Eastside
3) a big shopping mall
4) two big parks; one with a zoo. Another with a big sports center near the university.

I find Mexicali more of a family town. Friendly people and it lacks the sleaziness of TJ. Fun to visit in Winter when the weather is nice.

Also you can view the state Capitol building and judicial complex. There is a large plaza in the vicinity of the main state government buildings where civic activities take place.

You can also take a drive around the ejidos and ranches to see Mexican agriculture in action. A lot of cotton and wheat is grown around the area.

One major thing to point out is out of the several times I have been there, not once was I bothered by somebody asking for money or trying to sell me something in a pushy way. Once a taxi driver solicited my business while I was looking for a route taxi. I explained to him that I didn't have that much cash and needed a particular route. He gave me directions! (This was near the border!) In Tijuana normally they won't do that.
