Here is a place where people can discuss good camping spots they have found. Baja isn't known for their well marked places.

I'll go first...

Very nice place, right on the beach.

Another place called La Bocana about 30 minutes south of Ensenada:

If I remember correctly, it's right about 100 miles. It's about 30 miles from Ensenada, 18 of which is some of the worst unpaved road you can travel on. I used to go down the the little fishing village of Punto Santa Thomas and SCUBA dive. To get to the point, you head north from La Bocana.

I recommend a couple of things. When you leave Tiajuana, take the toll road down to Ensenada. It's much faster and not expensive. You will need to stop at the Visa office just outside Encenada and get the free Visa to travel further south. Then you go to KM 48 and turn off to the west for La Bocana. You will have just come down a fairly step hill heading west, then back south when the sign for La Bocana/Punto Santo Thomas comes up. From here you will see two roads branch off, one that follows the river and 'the high road'. You definitely want the high road as the low road is often washed out in flash floods. The high road is also subject to major problems, so take it slow. It generally took an hour from the highway to the point. Coming back, follow the signs to the border and "Ave Revolution" to get to the center of T.J. if you get lost (it's fairly easy to do).

The fishing and the people are incredible! There are several really beautiful homes on the coast (which you don't expect to see), and there is a small store at La Bocana. We paid $2-3 a night to camp on an old cement house foundation and the diving was fantastic! There is a boat ramp there and we used it to walk into the water. There is a cold water upwelling that comes ashore at this point so there are tons of sea urcins (they harvest them for Japan here), lots of ling cod (3-4 foot common), cabazon as well as lots of surf perch, tuna and other fish. A fair amount of lobster and very small abalone.

Be prepared for hot days, cold nights and a fair amount of wind most of the year. Don't go wandering off into the hills as there are rattlers. Take fresh water as water is in short supply. We always left what we didn't use for the locals. Their fishing shanties show just how simply housing can really be but they are incredible people.

I've been a lot of places SCUBA diving, but my favorite has always been Punto Santo Thomas. It's rustic beyond your expectations, but it's well worth the trip.

For a fun one night camping trip La Fonda (Palapa de Jose) is a fun place to camp if you don't mind being around a lot of people...a very party atmosphere on a cliff overlooking the beach. But I wouldn't really camp here for more than one or two nights...

This weekend I'm going camping in Punta Cabras/Erendira which is about 4 hours south. You cut off the highway after Santo Tomas and go down a "paved" road until you hit the town of Erendira you drive through the town and follwo the now dirt road North out of town can it is open camping. You can camp on the cliffs over the ocean closer to town or you can go further north and camp on the beach.

This spot is also on the course of the Baja 500 and a great place to watch the race camping.

Hopefully the weather will get nicer this weekend..

Camping spot update, Puntas Cabras/ Erindira I almost don't want to bring up talking about this place because I love camping here so much and I don't want more poeple to come. I would recommend a high rofile vechile to get tehre..if you camping close to town on the cliffs you can make it with a car but if you want to get camp on the sand on the beach you need something with some ground clearance. Weather was nice when we went first week in April. Did some fishing caught from the rocks ling cod and perch, but there is also bass to be had.

Locals sell firewood and deliver to your campsite.

This is a VERY neat camping spot just west of Laguna Salada and Mexicali. The road to get to it is off the autopista Tijuana-Mexicali just before the Laguna Salada. It’s a dirt road that takes you about 30 miles south of the highway which takes about 1 hour and a ½ because you can’t go more than 10-15 mph. DON’T TAKE A CAR OR ANY VEHICLE WITH SMALLER TIRES.
It’s a little oasis replete with palm trees tucked away between two small mountains. The site offers several palapas to rent for the weekend, each of which has room for two to four tents and each has its own natural hot spring pool. There is also an hour and a half (each way) hike to some pretty waterfalls.

My only complaint... it's hotter than a mother***** out there.

GOOD TIMES
