Without getting too technical ... GSM is a type of wireless technology. There's various ones CDMA, etc. GSM is more prevalant in other countries. If you want a phone to work in other countries, GSM is the way to go.
Phones you buy here in the U.S. will only work with particular services. If you buy a T-Mobile (GSM) phone, you can use their service only. If you put a Telcel different chip in their, it won't work.
"Unlocked" phones have been tweaked so that it works with any chip.
Go to eBay and search for "unlocked gsm" and you'll find tons of phones. Or just click here.

I think Telcel just wanted me to buy one of their phones. Like my gf said, they are rateros.
The phone I purchased was already a unlocked gsm, so I only needed the chip.

Hi Zunigan.
Sprint and Verizon phones can be unlocked, however they don't use the smart chips that we are talking about.
You will need to have a GSM (Cingular, Tmobile, or At&t) phone to use a TelCel Chip on it. Basically the chip is just a small removable 'chip' that sits in a socket and can be found underneath the battery of the cell phone.
Once you have a 'GSM' Phone in your hands, you can take it down to TJ and ask to buy a Telcel chip. Once you purchase it, you need to take out your current provider's chip and replace it with Telcel's. Once you have Telcel's chip in the socket, you now can only receive calls and make calls from your TJ Telcel number. You can call the US, but it costs a lot. When you cross back into the US, you would want to replace your TelCel Chip with your US chip so you can receive calls.
Since you currently have Sprint, you are going to have to buy another phone just for TJ and put the chip in the 'new' phone.

Once activated, buy some credits and that is it.
