Hi all;

Anyone know where to get computer components in TJ? My psuedo landlady/neighbor's (her son's actually) motherboard died and rather than buying a whole new computer...

Any places around like you see in Computer Edge Mag ads??? I offered to go to that L street store in Chula Vista and pick up anything they need and gave them craigslist too for TJ.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There used to be a store 1 or 2 miles South of the Otay Mesa border crossing. I think the name of the shopping center is plaza americana otay but I could be wrong. Anyway there's a Dorian's and Comercial Mexicana supermarket in the same shopping center.

Also there's another computer store next to office depot near the old Costco by 5 y 10.

I wouldn't buy computer parts in TJ because you'll definately pay more, most likely they'll have outdated parts and the parts don't come with a warranty. From past experience I know the Micro PC store in CV on L street is decent store to buy from and they will honor the manufacturer's warranty.

I cannot name any *exact* stores however you *will* pay about 7% more than the USA. The comment about being "legacy" stuff is old hat. I know, this is my life.


The best gigs are places like Internet Cafe's that are non-stocking retailers. They run a kid (typically literally, a kid) to a distributor who has the same stuff D&H or Newegg has NOB.

Now if all ya need is a motherboard and say the 64-bit CPU (
I don't own any repairable 32-bit systems)

And you can wait til I come back from Iowa in a week... I have a new in a box Athlon 64 motherboard and CPU in case one of mine tanks... that would be my life/money line so I away have new spare parts.

Here next sat (late) and leaving for GMT -5 next monday.

Are you offering that motherboard for sale? If so, what kinda' price?
I'll need to find out more about his system too. Think he has a Hewlett-Packard with a new HD 100gig; maybe upgrade his power supply, fans?

Tell me about buying anything electric in TJ, Ley anyway; bought some D batteries there and a simple hot plate; neither worked!!!

Sorry I am working in Des Moines Iowa... back for 24 hrs. than off to Phila and maybe Upstate NY next week.

I got a new in box Althon 64 with a new in Box AMD Athlon 64. (and a new in plastic Samsung SATA hd... not sure about a new in box PS making it across (sob) south of the border vs. nob (north of the border). I buy shit when I see a fair deal coming across Newegg.com or DandHDistributing (offical relseller stite in this case)... I don't really pay attention to what I paid and let stuff go for less than I paid for it as it becomes a cost of doing life if a critical box dies and I don't have a spare as handy as toilet paper....

I do know I don't have any parts that are old IDE, just SATA, and no 32-bit computer or other parts except for RAM... so all my stuff is new, but maybe not state of the art... but I cannot let my equipment have even 1 day downtime because of a stupid part failure...

yeah... looking to dump a bunch of shit the tech has changed in the past 60 days.... Frequently just getting picture for one of my books makes ti all worth while...


I sold a wonderful and barely used 36" CRT TV for $60 because I couldn't see hauling it... I bought a 15" LCD at local costco for $390. 400W vs. 34W.. no moving expenses... etc...

I think big picture which includes what I got was insurance... the orgional didn't blow up, so the new part can go away cheap...

All the existing new spares are Athlon 64 single core=== replacing will all dual core...

He replaced the hard drive; just got his certicate as Computer Technician II and going for Tech I; brought his puter to school so others could check it out; diagnoses: motherboard! Thanks though, usually it is the hard drive; moving parts do usually wear out sooner

I pay half his internet monthly, so get off really cheap and feel a little guilty as I am the only one on using it; I'll even pay you for it and let the starving student pay me back; plus it may cut down on the whole family and friends coming over here and using my computer :shock:

Hi all;

Need some help or info if anyone can. My monitor quit and have this fuzzy used one that I can't stand!

So, looking to buy a good used or new monitor or find out where a good deal might be. I priced them at Micro PC on L street in Chula Vista and they were out of the $105 flats on sale; not sure if that would be a good buy anyway and the others start at $185 up and up and up...

Checked Craigs, Computer Edge, SD Union etc.

Anyone have one lying around that they want to sell?

Need it before I go blind, please...

Why not come up to the Otay border crossing and walk across to Borderline Electronics? Prices are great! I got a really nice MS keyboard and mouse there yesterday when I attempted to clean my MAC keyboard with a bottle of Tecate @ about 3:30 AM.

TigerDirect.com is also selling 22" flat panels for about $200 after rebate. Borderline is open til about 7:30 PM on weekdays.

I was saving it to set up a desktop/server system but since I have no work and no money, I would be more than happy to sell it to you. Most of us buy our computer and/or electronics related stuff in San Diego, make sure it works in the store before taking it, remove it from the box in the parking lot and then hide it between our grocery bags and kids stuff when crossing.

I drive a minivan and the back windows are tinted so they pull me over all the time. But when they slide the door open and see grocery bags, my kids in car seats and toys all over they just wave me through. If they see it they will want at least a hundred dollars or more in duty.

From what my wonderful Mexican attorney neighbor, George tells, me, you are allowed to cross from the US to the Mexican side with both a laptop and a desktop computer with no problem. As for the bags, and such, I have crossed with my Beetle filled to the gills from shopping til I dropped, been pulled over, and waved on by.

I have been living here for a lot of years and have bought several computers and imported them.

The most I ever paid for importing a computer is $25

If you have contact with the authorities they can ask to see your factura for items like computadoras. If you don't have one they can sieze the property.

This is not common its true butt for such a small amount of money I prefer to be safe when it comes to my computer (and more important the data on it)

TJ: That is true if you are bringing in a used computer. New computers are charged much more. But even out of the box a new computer looks new and the agents at the border have gotten very savy when they see no dust by the fan port on the back of your PC and the power cord has not straightened out after use over time. I know because that is exactly what they told my next door neighbor when she unboxed her PC from Frys and thought she could just pass it off as used. It cost her $125 . She claimed that she had no receipt, the agent brought out a book and put a value very close to what she paid. She haggled a bit and was charged the import tax. The best way to bring a PC that is new is piece by piece, out of the box, packed in with other stuff and during the peak traffic time at 5:00 PM. Nothing is 100% but it is your best bet if you want to avoid paying the tax. Otherwise just pull into the declare lane and pay up.

There is one way that the smugglers use to beat the light at the border

You know when you drive through into Mexico one is green and says Pase the other is red and says Revision

When you are driving through the exact spot of the border line there are islands seperating the lanes.

Make sure you are as far right as possible (without driving on the island) and your tires will mostly miss the pressure sensitive pads on the ground and you will get a green light everytime.

This is not a myth it is a mechanical/physical reality with the way the red light green light lottery works.

Because your right side tires will completely miss the sensor pads and your left tires will mostly miss the sensor pads (you can see the pads on the ground as you drive through if you are looking and if you are any good at missing potholes you can surely miss these) this causes a green light even in the wee hours when almost everyone else is getting red lights.
