We are a binational gay couple (American/Mexican) moving from Puerto Vallarta to Tijuana, given the proximity to the US I wonder if landlords in the Tijuana area run credit checks on American citizens?

 

Also, I have found several rental ads online where they ask you to have a 'fiador' in Tijuana, we don't know anyone in TJ, how can we overcome this?

A gay couple are worried about a credit check in TJ, you're funny.

Just look for a place where they don't ask for one.

They wanted a fiador in my current place and when I used to live in Playas.  You can get around it by showing you have money ie show them your check stub from a current employer or bank statement or you can pay another months rent up front but make sure you document that in writing.  I think the check stub or giving them another months rent is best.  Be careful to not show them a bank statement with alot of money otherwise you may open yourself up as a target.

Never had anyone ask for a credit check.  As long as you have the $$ for the rent and deposit usually that's all most want.

WHY would you move from PV to TJ...don't think it's going to be more "liberal" or "progressive" than the mainland of Mexico because it is not.

The reason we want to move from Puerto Vallarta to Tijuana is because my partner has a job offer in San Diego and he will have to commute to and from Tijuana at least twice a week.

 

We are very intrigued about the idea but at the same time very concerned about safety and have no idea where in the area we should try to look for a place, any pointers would be greatly appreciated it.

Zona rio would put you close to the border crossing. Hopefully he has sentri or something similar otherwise the wait is long.

I'd be more worried about:

1) horrible air pollution including polluted beaches;

2) horrible rush hour traffic;

3) lack of sophistication compared to other Mexican cities

4) the conservative environment similar to San Diego

than crime.  You'll also find cost of living more than the mainland due to proximity to the border.
