I was on the way to the border while driving an old beater (I’ll skip the reason) when the pulley fell off the crankshaft. (No, it’s not my big old gas guzzling highway curser which I want to sell but can't until the price of gas drops. ) I needed to get to a mechanic before the car overheated, so I headed for some place close.

That ended up being the Bridgestone/Firestone station on Paseo de los Hereos a couple blocks south of Hotel Lucerna. It's near where Paseo de los Hereos and Sanchez Toabada intersect.

I’ve now been there three times while “restoring” this old beater to its proper (that’s to say roadworthy) condition. So far I've been happy with their work.

(Once there was a delay, but that was a parts problem. I finally had to special order parts in the US and it took me 2 days as no TJ or SD dealership, let along auto parts house, had the indispensable $5.75 part that I needed. Everybody had the pulley, but nobody had the bolt.)

I always get a written estimate (pre supuesto) which I think a good practice anywhere in the world when dealing with an auto mechanic. So far--other than the parts problem--things have gone well. The biggest downside is they don’t speak much English and my Spanish vocabulary is somewhat lacking when it comes to car parts. (They charged $22.00 to balance all four tires and $40.00 per axel to install shocks. Stocks absorber was one of those holes in my vocabulary.)

Another thing I like is that you can buy part in the US and they'll install them for you. They seem happy to do that kind of business. (So far I've found parts a little less expensive in the US than in Mexico. I think the reason is Mexican import taxes are higher than California sales tax.)
