Seems me and a couple of other bloggers are moving this month and might be in need of some household items.

I only need some inexpensive furniture like desk, tables, etc. Some may need appliances.

Anyone know where second-hand markets are? Will they deliver?

Thanks

I've been to fela markets, swap meets, carpes, tiangis, et cetera several times in Tijuana I it always amazed me how much they wanted to get for beat up old furniture. For the same prices I could usually find it new, albeit not very hig quality. We bought our bedroom set from a furniture store on the north side of 1st street, just west of Ave. F Maritnez. Double bed, 2 bedtables with drawers, dresser, 4 drawer chest for less than $500.

There are a lot of second hand furniture stores on Blvd Cucapah on the east side of Tijuana, but they charge to much and would charge you to deliver.

Thanks SDC.

My question may sound snobby... I am looking for NEW stuff with Mfg. warrenty. The energy star rating I saw on the new LG stuff in the Fry's stores blew me away. The ratings we're off the chart on the low end in their class of stove, frig <no external ice offering> 11.2 Cubic Feet....

yet the stove has a right front "power boost" for throwing a half a kilo of sliced chicken for a stir fry that goes NOW..... So I don't need to bring my 19 LB iron wok for eaking out 400 G of chicken by bringing a big hunk of iron up to temp on an electric stove....

Ditto for a bed. I want one of those pillow tops... Last year I stayed in a motel for well over 250 nights. I moved from Holiday Inn to Americasuites over my 2 weeks this month in atlanta because my location changed for teaching.... I know the pillowtop mattresses are killer. I like it better than my tempurpedic....

I will be here a long time and I'm not the spring chicken to be saying someday.,... someday is now. The next trip could be pushing an oak tree... so I am looking for fair prices on good stuff... not used stuff...

The Fundadores swap meet is on the weekends and is huge. Lots of that kind of stuff in varying quality. I got a metal futon sofa bed for $75 delivered. The screws were either missing or gone, but was able to buy new ones for les than a dollar. I looked around at several places in San Diego to find the new similar futons were at least a couple to several hundred bucks. Needless to say, I'm quite happy with the deal even though I was nearly screwed because of the screws. laugh.gif Also got a reclining chair for $25 from the same people. My two cats think they own it now.

Zona Norte has many "segundas" scattered about, many on Coahuila, most to the west of the stripper clubs. My fairly new frig cost about $150 there and was delivered. Many older friges were around $100 but can suck up the electricity and be noisy.

Always check to see if any parts are broken, missing, non-working, stained, etc. as a bargaining chip. Often times, the seller won't even know the item is damaged.

On washer, dryers, friges, etc. guarantees are often given, though how well they are honored I'm not sure. Anyone have knowledge on this ?

I think most guarantees for appliances at Fundadores are 90 days.
At least that's how long mine was when I bought a dryer at the Fundadores swapmeet a few years ago. I paid $150. We had a problem with it after 2 months so we called and they sent a repairman to fix it no questions asked. We just had to show him the original reciept. We have been using it ever since without trouble.

I nearly saw a tragedy this morning at a local swapmeet. Some couple had their kid in one of those tiny portable trashcans and it had a small handle on it so they were "strolling" him along and a taxi libre hit the can but luckily it was not going more than 5 miles an hour. Not sure who would be at fault over this. The parents? or the driver. It was on the passanger side and the parents "strolled" the kid nearly into the car and the libre swerved right to avoid pedstrians and then hit the can. the kid wasn't injured but I think the parents should at least put the kid in a real stroller.

Well, George, how would that have made any difference? He swerved to miss pedestrians - that's a reflexive action. He would have hit the stroller too. And that may have furnished LESS protection depending.
somewhere between San Diego and Ensenada

We got our table and chairs, bed from a second hand place on Diaz Ordaz in Otay Mesa. The owner speaks english and delivers for free. After we gave him our address we found out he lives only one street from us!

Mesa de Otay is one of the principle delegations of Tijuana, quite large. Any more specific hints as to it's location?

There are many, many, many swap meets in Tijuana. Known as Tiangis, Carpas, Sobreruedas, and of course Swap Meets. They range from small weekly neighborhood happenings to large multi-acre commercial ventures.

The swap meet is close to the Otay Mesa border crossing, just a few blocks east. Many people from the US walk over. North of Ave. Bellas Artes, centered on Ave. Lopez Portillo.

Its one of the largest in TJ. On Sunday.

"more specific directions"

Hence the above mentioned map which gives the exact location for the non-geniuses among us.
