Has Mexico gotten around to the part about Americans registering cars in Tijuana?

Don't count on the direct purchase in the forbidden zone (50/100 kilometers from coast/border).  It's only passed a couple of the hurdles needed to become law.  It's backed by a powerful person though, so it stands a chance.  I may buy my house from the bank if it passes and stop paying the fidecomiso.

Do you have to pay an import fee to register an American titled car there?

To register your car in TJ you need a Drivers license. To get a license you need a resident card and to get that you need a resident visa. You do have to pay import fees. Of course this all depends on the office you go to, the day of the week, the agent you talk to and of course the perfume/cologne you are wearing. Mexican government offices make US gov. offices look organized and efficient.

Tijuaneses Americans in TJ drive like crap, Get your Mexican Insurance here.

And to have a resident visa you need proof of minimum $2,000USD in your bank account for 6 months plus other fees and requirements.  This is why most here don't have that.

Why would you want to buy a car in Mexico anyway...they are much cheaper in the U.S. unless you need Baja license plates...and those will cost you even if you have the necessary documentation...it isn't cheap.

You can buy a house here in Mexico.

With an FM3(and that is in the process of changing details) living here 5-6 years, proof of residence and income, $1,200@month(redeposit the same money), ask and pay for Mexican citizenship, yes you can have dual, and buy land anywhere, even on the shoreline and build your own house with your bare hands if desired without a building inspector.

You can not for vote or join the military with this citizenship.

Car?, got rid of mine, taxis and busses, so cheap and no stress.

Love Mexico!

I was thinking that if Mexico would allow foreigners to retire in Mexico, they also should let foreigners use their own driver's license.

Some cars are cheaper in Mexico especially the Volkswagen Jetta Clásico. I see some other cars are also cheaper down there.

I am waiting for Mexico to fully legalize foreign ownership of houeses at the border and the coast. It sounded promising.

I bought at a Jetta TDI (deisel) back in 2011.  It was about $2000 more in Tijuana than in San Diego.

The Jetta Clásico is only sold in Mexico using the older Jetta. Some cars may be more expensive in Mexico (probably most of them) but some were a little cheaper.

The Ford F150 costs more in the U.S. than the Ford Lobo in Mexico - Ford Lobo XLT Doble Cabina is 473,000MXN (a little below $37,000) while the similar Ford F150 XLT Super Crew is $38,000.

Now, if it was 14MXN for 1USD, I would get a better deal.
