Very nice... I like the Saturday games. How do you buy your tickets? I've been to one game since the were ascended to the Liga MX. I bought the tickets on ticketmaster.com.mx and then picked them up at the Ghandi bookstore on Paseo de Los Heroes.

Is this the most convenient way?

I once went to try to by tickets to a game against Atlas in person at the offices in Pueblo Amigo but they sold out. It used to be alot easier to get tickets when they were in the ascension league.

2 new players for Xolos
Noé Maya returns to the team for the third time, while Dani Márquez will be there for the first time

SAN DIEGO, CA.- Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente will count on having essentially the same roster that was part of the LIGA MX-2012 Apertura championship team. The team added two more players, midfielder Noe Maya and Daniel Omar Marquez Palacios as the team’s offseason acquisitions. The Xoloitzcuintles made the move to help with depth as the team heads into two tournaments, the 2013 Clausura and the 2013 Copa Libertadores in international play.

Club Tijuana’s senior team is training in San Diego where it will continue its preseason heading into the next Mexican soccer tournament that kicks off January 6 with a Week 1 match up at Puebla FC. The team is preparing under coach Antonio Mohamed.

Maya is a mobile midfielder that enters its third stint with Club Tijuana. The 27-year-old played for the Xoloitzcuintles during the 2007-2008 season and was part of the team in the 2011-2012 cycle as the team reached promotion to the First Division.

Maya can play as an attacking and defending midfielder, can play in the flanks and is dangerous with his speed and ball control. His last game with the Xoloitzcuintles was against Rayados de Monterrey in the Liguilla quarterfinals of the 2012 Clausura. He played for San Luis FC last tournament before returning to Tijuana.

Marquez, 26, from Guadalajara joins the Xoloitzcuintles for the first time after playing with Necaxa in the Liga de Ascenso MX, Mexico’s Second Division.

The forward came out of Club America’s youth teams and began his career in 2006. He made his First Division debut in 200 with Club America where he scored 13 goals. He also played with Las Aguilas in three versions of the Copa Libertadores where he scored three times.

The Duvier Riascos effect in Tijuana's Xolos
Hailed by fans on Saturdays game

TIJUANA, BC.- The match between Xoloiztucuintles de Caliente vs. Pachuca on Saturday, was yet again more proof of the effect that the Columbian forward, Duvier Riascos, has on the team and the fans.

Whether he comes into the game as a substitute, and whether if he scores or not, what matters is that in every game, he plays with all his heart and effort to give the fans from and outside of this city, a good time.

As the rain came down mostly in the first half of the game on Saturday, there weren’t any type of actions worthy to mention, and had very few exciting plays which the fans in attendance were expecting something more spectacular.

At the start of the second half, Duvier Riascos was announced as the first substitute to come into the game, which the fans at the stadium made a lot of noise in excitement for.

Riascos presence in the game made a difference that was noticeable right away, when Club Tijuana started to create some offensive plays that in no time would result into a goal.

At the 55 minute mark of the game, Fernando Arce stole the ball from his opponent from all the way from midfield, and served a long pass to Riascos who dribbled the ball into the goalie box and took a shot at goal, but the ball was blocked by a defender from Pachuca with his hand.

The referee, Ricardo Arellano, right away blew the whistle and called a penalty shot in favor of Xolos, in which Xolos player Aflredo “Chango” Moreno took the shot and put the ball into the net and gave Xolos the advantage 1-0.

Riascos continued to surprise everyone with spectacular and striking plays that would be applauded by the fans for, and also for his efforts on defense when he would run back to help out with his quick speed that he is characterized by.

Since his arrival to the Xolos, the native from Buenaventura, Columbia, has shown his great talent as a starter in 18 games in the Clausura 2012 tournament, where he started off by scoring 5 goals, and then 10 more goals in a total of 22 games that were disputed in the 2012 tournament. And finally at the championship match against the Red Devils from Toluca, he once again scored a spectacular goal when he faked out the goalie Alfredo Talavera, and put the ball in the net.

His style of play is very fast and flashy with a quick speed that he changes very suddenly that drives defenders crazy. Riascos also has very good ball handling skills, in which his dribbles leave the fans with their vision all twisted in the stands, and who all of a sudden takes shots at goal that seem to be impossible. But it’s that style of play that flows through the blood in his veins.

Although Riascos was not able to score in Saturdays game, his influence is so much that the fans at the stadium chanted his name loud in appreciation for his efforts, love and dedication that this player has towards Xoloitzcuintles and the red and black jersey.

Tigres 2-2 Xolos, an incredible tie game
Both teams streak is over, but continue undefeated

by Manuel R. Medina

February 2 2013
SAN NICOLAS DE LOS GARZA, NUEVO LEON. – The winning streak for Tigres and Club Tijuana has both come to an end after Saturday night’s match, which ended in a tie game with a score of 2-2.

The game was part of Week 5 of the 2013 Cluasura tournament of the Liga MX, and was played at the University Stadium in Monterrey.

This was the most anticipated game of the week, because these 2 teams are the only teams in the Mexican soccer league that have started their undefeated with 4 victories each. Therefore, this match was set up to be a spectacular one.

Here’s how the game went:

Right from the start of the game, both teams initiated offensive attacks while trying to score on both ends of the field.

The first attempt came from Emanuel “tito” Villa from Tigres, who took a shot at goal, but just ended up veering off to the side from the goalie arch that was being guarded by goal keeper, Cirilo Suacedo. Three minutes later Xolos would answer back with a play where Alfredo “Chango” Moreno received a pass, but was not able to get a shot off comfortably and the ball just ended going out of bounds.

At minute 14 of the game, the goalie “Juninho” tried to tee off a ball 3 quarters of the field long, but the ball ended up with Hugo Ayala, who tried to pass it to Hugo Palos with a weak header, in which Fidel Martinez was able to take the ball from Palos and have Moreno score for Xolos to put them ahead on the scoreboard 1-0.

Xolos player, Fernando Arce, at around minute 32 hit the ball long to try to lengthen the resting time, so that the team can regroup and just ended the first half in this fashion.

In the second half of the match at minute 53 and due to a defensive error. Carlos Salcido was able to filter a pass to his teammate Lucas Lobos from Tigres, who received a perfect pass that Xolos captain Javier Gandolfi let go by, not knowing that it would end up in the opponents possession, who put the ball in the back of the net to even up the score 1-1.

Lobos celebrated his goal by dedicating it to his new born baby, who has been having some health problems lately.

Alfredo Moreno suffered an injury late in the game, which Xolos head coach Antonio Mohamed was forced to substitute him for Richard Ruiz, who went in as a forward playing on the right side of the feel that would send Duvier Riascos to cover the center.

At the 60th minute mark Fernando Arce took a free kick and scored, but the goal was annulled because Javier Gandolfi was marked as being offside.

Tigres would now begin to dribble the ball and have more control, which after a few intelligent plays, they were able to score at minute 65 of the match, when Danilinho took the ball towards the right side of the field and served a pass to Lucas Lobos, who was able to get an advantage on the defenders from Xolos and scored to put up Tigres now 2-1.

Xolos continued to try to score, and at around minute 75 of the game, Cristian Pellerano all the way from midfield launched a pass which Israel Juarez from Tigres was not able to control, and ended up in the back of the net due to Duvier Riascos who came from behind and took an impressive shot putting the game now 2-2.

The canine squad continued to look for that next opportunity to score, while the head coaches from both teams were making some changes that would result with the best outcome in their favor.

The referee Francisco Chacon would now blow the whistle ending the game, and awarding each team 1 point each for the tie game.

This week, Cirilo Saucedo and Fernando Arce will be back again with the Mexican National soocer team who will be playing against Jamaica, while Pablo Cesar Aguilar will also join his countries national team who will be playing a friendly match against El Salvador.

This Saturday Xolos will be facing the “Aguilas del America” at their home field at Estadio Caliente, which will be part of Week 6 of the tournament.

Xolos 1-2 America : the champion is defeated
With only 9 men on the field the “Aguilas” pull off a victory

by Manuel R. Medina

February 9 2013
TIJUANA, BC. – In a very exciting match, the Aguilas (Eagles) of Club America were able to pull off a victory (2-1) against Club Tijuana Xolitzcuintles de Caliente tonight, with goals by Osvaldo Martinez and Paul Aguilar, and scoring for the Xolos was Pablo Cesar Aguilar.

The match took place at Caliente stadium in Tijuana, and was part of Week 6 of the Clausura 2013 tournament in the Liga MX.

Due to the injury of Alfredo “Chango” Moreno, head coach Antonio Mohamed had to modify the players on the field from the usual 4-4-3 set up to a 4-4-2.

The very first play that posed any threat came with only two minutes into the game, where Duvier Riascos received a pass in the middle of the big goalie box, and tried to shake off a defender for a shot at goal which he did manage to kick, but the ball ended up in the hands of the goalie.

In the eleventh minute of the match, Cristian Pellerano from Xolos committed a foul against Christian “Chucho” Benitez inside the goalie box, which the referee awarded America a penalty shot that Osvaldo Martinez took like a master, and put America ahead on the scoreboard 1-0.

Although America was ahead on the scoreboard, they stopped launching an intense offensive attack like before and just started to play calmly. This allowed Xolos now to launch more offensive counter attacks to try to even up the score.

With only 21 minutes of the first half that has now gone by, Rubens Sambueza committed a foul against Duvier Riascos that earned him his second yellow card, and automatically was ejected from the game leaving now his team with only 10 players.

Although Tijuana now had the advantage of one extra man, they were not able to score against America which in some plays there were up to seven players up top on the attacks.

Aquivaldo Mosqueda in the 38th minute of the game would be the second player from America to be ejected, after receiving his second yellow card in the match which would now leave hi team with only 9 players on the field.

At this point of the game, here is where the strategy battle began between head coach Miguel “Piojo” Herrera from Club America and head coach Antonio Mohamed from Xolos, who substituted Juan Carlos Nuñez out for Raul Nava.

As the game progressed the actions were mostly by Xolos, who throughout the entire second was the only team that would advance up and down the field.

The only chance that America had to score again was in minute 53 of the match, when Paul Aguilar dribbled the ball almost 3 quarters of the way down the field, and then took an impressive shot at goal that caught goal keeper Saucedo by surprise, which the shot ended touching the back of the net to put America now ahead 2-0.

Xolos continue to insist on offensive attacks, and finally in minute 75 of the game Pablo Cesar Aguilar was able to score a goal to put up the Xolos on the scoreboard now 2-1. This goal got all the fans at Caliente stadium to begin shouting Xolos! Xolos! in an effort to encourage the team to make a comeback, but it was not enough as the clock was now winding down.

The referee blew his whistle to mark the end of the match and give America a very important victory, while also handing down the first loss for Xolos in this tournament.

Jaguares 2-0 Xolos, Tijuana stumbles in Chiapas
Edgar Castillo was ejected from the game

by Manuel R. Medina

February 16 2013
TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, CHIAPAS. – The team that is currently in last place in the general standings board was able to defeat Club Tijuana (2-0) tonight after Edgar Castillo was ejected from the game, which left Xolos with only 10 men on the field.

The match that was played tonight at the Victor Manuel Reyna stadium in Chiapas is part of Week 7 of the Clausura tournament 2013 of the Liga MX.

For the Xolos head coach Antonio Mohamed, this is the first time that under his leadership that the team is defeated in two consecutive matches.

Here is how the game played out…

Good play action early in the game got all the fans excited especially when Fidel Martinez in the sixth minute of the match kicked over a great pass to Joe Corona (Xolos), who dove to head the ball in. But the ball just veered off to the side of the arch that was being defended by Edgar Hernandez.

At minute twelve of the match, Leiton Jimenez missed an opportunity to score against the Xolos, when from a corner kick he stopped the ball with his chest right in front of Cirilo Saucedo, who was able to keep the ball and prevented the goal.

The game got a bit boring for a while until around minute 32, when Martinez was able to kick a great pass to Duvier Riascos, who was not able to connect with the ball and just watched it pass by. Jaguares were able to respond with a play of their own, when in the last corner kick of the first half, Luis Gabriel Rey was able to head the ball in the direction of the goal arch, but Cirilo Saucedo was just in time to deflect the ball and prevent a goal once again.

On the very last play of the first half, Jose David Toledo took a shot at goal but the ball just ended up at gloves of Saucedo.

In the second half of the match, Antonio Mohamed decided to take Joe Corona from the game and sent Richard Ruiz in. This change had almost an immediate effect when Ruiz was able to get a shot off, which ended up just hitting the goalie from Jaguares chest, because Ruiz didn’t really have a good angle to put the ball into the net. The game still continued to remain scoreless.

It wasn’t until minute 48 of the match, where Luis Gabriel Rey would score a penalty shot caused by Edgar Castillo, who pulled Franco Arizala from his jersey which earned Castillo his second yellow card in the game, and the ejection. The game now was Jaguares 1-0 Xolos.

This goal gave Jaguares a lot of confidence, who then started to make very good plays that in the 59th minute of the match, Arizala was not able to capitalize on a good play that would of given Jaguares a bigger advantage in the game.

Arizala did not want to disappoint his team and the fans, where in minute 62 of the match him and Rey developed a great play, in which Rey took advantage off and scored by sending the ball in between the legs of Saucedo. Jagaures were up now 2-0.

Towards the end of the game things got a bit physical, where the referee Roberto Garcia Orozco had to penalize a couple players with a yellow card to calm things down.

Garcia then soon after blew the whistle for the end of the match that would now give Jaguares their first victory in the season, while Xolos now lose their second consecutive match.

Xolos will fly to Bogota, Columbia, to face Millonarios on Tuesday in the Copa Libertadores of America tournament. Xolos next game in the Liga Mx will be on Saturday February 23 against Atlante.

Xolos 1-0 Millonarios, Tijuana is victorious in debut
The team is looking to go all the way in the tournament

by Manuel R. Medina

February 20 2013
BOGOTA, COLUMBIA. – Club Tijuana Xolitzcuintles de Caliente had a successful and historic debut in the Copa Libertadores tournament of America, after pulling of a victory against Club Deportivo Millonarios from Columbia.

The match was played in front of a spectacular crowd at the Nemesio Camacho Stadium “The Campin” which is located in the capital of Columbia. This game kicked off the action from Group 5 of the tournament which this match was only the first leg.

Here is how the game went.

Xolos jumped onto the field with a 4-4-2 formation with Cirilo Saucedo as goalie: Edgar Castillo, Juan Carlos Núñez, Javier Gandolfi and Pablo Cesar Aguilar all on defense. Cristian Pellerano, Joe Corona, Leandro Augusto and surprisingly Richard Ruiz all played at midfield. As forwards were only Fidel Martinez and Duvier Riascos.

Throughout the first couple of minutes of the match, Millonarios tried to play a long ball type of game with long passes, in an effort to try to break up the good defense line of Xolos and surprise the goalie Cirilo Saucedo.

In the second half of the match, the changes that the Xolos head coach Antonio Mohamed made, worked. Edgar Castillo launched a great pass from the left side of the field to the right, where Richard Ruiz was able to receive the ball and control it with his chest and took a shot at goal and scored.

The red and black squad then made some changes to strengthen their defense, where both Josh Abrego and Daniel Martinez were put into the game to help out on defense so that the team could have a better balance.

The Columbian team tried to put some pressure towards the end of the match to try to tie the game, but there wasn’t enough time left to try to make this happen, and Xolos would walk away with a win. The Panamanian player Roman Torres was also ejected towards the end of the game.

Tomorrow the world champions from Brazil, SC Corinthians Paulista, will be playing against the club San Jose Oruro. This match will conclude all of the action from group 5 of this tournament in this first round of the Copa Libertadores.

Xolos 4-0 San Jose: Major pounding in historic match
First ever Copa Libertadores game in border city

by Manuel R. Medina

February 27 2013
TIJUANA, BC. – The first ever Copa Libertadores game played in the border city of Baja California was celebrated in great fashion, as Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles (Mexico) pounded San Jose Oruro (Bolivia) 4-0.

The match was played as part of Week 2 of the Copa Libertadores tournament 2013, where these two teams from group 5 faced off at Caliente stadium that was filled to about 85% of its capacity.

Here is how the game went:

From the very start of this game, there was a lot of action going on which with barely two minutes into the game, Duvier Riascos received a great pass from the right side of the field, and took a shot at goal at close range of the goalie Carlos Lampe.

Two minutes later Xolos had control of the ball on the left side of the field, where Alfredo “El Chango” Moreno received the ball and passed it to Edgar “El Gringo” Castillo, who took a shot at goal towards the left post and found its way into the net to put Xolos up on the scoreboard 1-0.

At minute 19 of the match, Carlos Saucedo from San Jose tried to answer back on a corner kick, but the goalie from Xolos, Cirilo Saucedo, was able to punch the ball out of the danger zone.

At this point of the game, San Jose completely lost itself which allowed the Xolos to have control of the match, and it wasn’t until around the 39th minute mark when Jose Marcelo Gomez would come close to scoring a goal.

Now in the second half of the match and with only one minute into the game, Fernando Arce kicked a magnificent pass on a free kick to Pablo Cesar Aguilar, who with his right leg directed the ball onto the left side of the goalie, who was not able to do nothing but just look at the ball pass by on its way into the net. Xolos would now go up on the scoreboard with 2 goals to none.

Again almost two minutes later after this last goal, the Ecuadorian, Fidel Martinez, would receive the ball and centered it to Joe Corona who came running down the field, and slid towards the ball to kick it in for another goal. Xolos now would have a lead of 3-0.

At the 74th minute of the match, Fernando Arce took charge in centering a corner kick to to Aguilar, who then headed the ball towards the furthest post of the arch, and was re-bounded by Fidel Martinez into the net to put the Xolos up now 4-0.

A few minutes later the Ecuadorian referee, Omar Ponce, blew the whistle for the end of the match.

This is how the game ended with Xolos now leading group 5 in the tournament, which means that whatever happens tomorrow between Millonarios vs. Corinthians, it will not matter.

Xolos will now travel to Guadalajara to face Atlas in a match that will part of Week 9 of the Liga MX. Soon after, 8 days later the team will be playing against the world champions SC Corinthians Paulista of Brazil. San Jose de Oruro will be playing as visitors against the Unvirsitarios in Bolivia, and then travel to Colombia to face Millonarios.

Atlas 1-0 Xolos, early goal defeats the champions
Tijuana was left with 9 players on the field

by Manuel R. Medina

March 3 2013
GUADALAJARA, JALISCO. - With an early goal by Omar Bravo from Atlas, Club Tijuana lost last night with a final score of 1-0 at Jalisco stadium, in a game that was played as part of Week 9 of the Clausura 2013 tournament of the Liga MX.

This victory now puts Atlas in second place on the general standings board.

At the start of the first half, not even a minute had gone by when Diego Olsina centered a pass to Duvier Riascos, who attempted a header towards the arch that was being defended by Miguel Angel Pinto.

Atlas quickly responded with an offensive attack when Omar Bravo got a hold of the ball outside of the goalie area, took it towards the arch and with almost no direction or great force, kicked the ball into the net to put Atlas up 1-0 early on in the game.

The goal by Omar Bravo from Atlas was the result of a mistake by the Xolos defense. In an attempt to get the ball out of their side of the field, Cristian Pellerano made a mistake and instead left the ball right in front of Omar Bravo who took advantage of the play and scored.

Ten minutes later, Cristian Pellerano attempted to score from way outside of the goalie box, but the ball just hit the top cross bar and the goalies back. The ball hit the goal posts many times throughout the game, and saved Atlas from being scored on by the Xolos in their attempt to tie the score in the game.

Now in the second half Xolos was the only team who was creating great plays, but their forwards were not able to capitalize on them with a goal.

With the time now running out Xolos became desperate in trying to score, which only led to two of their players earning a red card and ejected from the game. The first player to leave the game was Joshua Abrego at the 84th minute, and then soon after Fidel Martinez who came into the game as a substitute. Xolos now with very few minutes left on the clock were left with only 9 players on the field.

This is how the game would end with Xolos being defeated in Jalisco, and leaving 3 points behind that were picked up by Atlas who is now in second place.

Club Tijuana Xololitzcuintles de Caliente will now start preparing for their next Copa Libertadores de America match against SC Corianthians Paulista of Brazil.

Xolos move up 79 spots in world rankings
They could possibly move all the way into the top 50 best teams in the world
by Manuel R. Medina

March 4 2013
TIJUANA, BC. – After obtaining the Clausura 2012 tournament championship title, and for their recent performance in the Copa Libertadores de America 2013, Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente (XOLOS) has now improved 79 spots to the number 121 best team in the world in the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFHHS) rankings list.

It is important to highlight that the victories obtained in international tournaments weigh heavier than local league victories, which is why the Xolos have been able to improve their status in this list after defeating Millonarios of Columbia and San Jose Oruro from Bolivia.

Xolos now have improved their position from number 200 back in February to number 121 with 113.5 points.

Club Tijuana is also now the third best team in Mexico right behind Club Santos Laguna who are second in the country and ranked 74th worldwide on this list with 142.5 points. Due to the bad performances that Monterrey has had lately; they have been recently downgraded to the 49th best team on this list with 170.5 points, but are still the best ranked team in Mexico.

The best team worldwide on the IFHHS rankings list is Chelsea from England, who for the first time in a long time now holds this spot once again, followed by Club Atletico from Madrid, Spain, FC Bayern Munich from Germany and Corinthians Paulista from Brazil, who improved two spots on the list and who will be playing against the Xolos on Wednesday at Caliente stadium.

FC Barcelona has been removed from their number one spot down to fifth place, followed by Boca Juniors from Argentina, Real Madrid, Juventus e Internazionale from Italy and rounding off the top 10 is Sao Paulo FC from Brazil.

The league games that Xolos have recently lost might affect their ranking, but if Club Tijuana is able to pull off a victory against Corianthians on Wednesday, then they could possibly move all the way into the top 50 best teams in the world. All there is to do now is just wait, and see what will happen at the game on Wednesday.

Xolos vs. Corinthians for the number one spot
They will meet face to face today at Caliente stadium

by Manuel R. Medina

March 6 2013
TIJUANA, BC. - Club Tijuana once again is ready to make history today, when they will be playing against SC Corinthians Paulista of Brazil, in a game where they will be looking to qualify into the next round as the number one team and leaders of group 5.

This match will be part of Week 3 of the Copa Libertadores 2013 tournament, and will be disputed at Caliente stadium at 5p.m. Tijuana local time (PST).

A packed stadium full of fans is being expected to witness on Wednesday a very interesting match, where two champions will battle it out on the synthetic field at the Xolos home field. Tickets for this match are still on sale at the Caliente stadium ticket box office, but are also expected to sell out soon.

Unfortunately for Xolos, Edgar Castillo will be sitting out this game, due to a recent surgery that he successfully underwent to repair 3 different fractures in his face. Castillo will now miss a few games and his medical report, which will soon be known, will indicate when Castillo will return to the field.

Now, because of this modification, the head coach for the Xolos Antonio Mohamed will most likely set up his starting team as follows: starting goale, Cirilo Saucedo. Defenders: Juan Carlos Nunez, Jarvier Gandolfi, Pablo Cesar Aguilar and Richard Ruiz. In the midfield will we Cristian Pellerano, Fernando Arce and Joe Corona. The forwards will be Fidel Martinez, Alfredo “Chango” Moreno and Duvier Riascos.

SC Corinthians have a good deck of cards themselves, where they will most likely set up the field in the same way which they did when they were able to obtain a victory against Millonarios from Columbia, which is as follows: Cassio as goalie and as defenders it will be, Fabio Santos, Paulo Andre, Gil and Alessandro. Playing in the midfield will be Renato Augusto, Ralf, Danilo and Paulinho. The forwards will be Paolo Guerrero and Alexandre Pato.

It is important to highlight that although Corinthians play with a 4-4-2 line up, their set up is still very dynamic because their sideline midfielders don’t participate much on defense, instead they play as attackers to push the team up top.

The game will be broadcasted live on Fox Sports in Mexico, and through Fox Deportes in the United States

Xolos 1-0 Corinthians: Tijuana brings down the world champs
The lonely goal was scored by captain Javier Gandolfi

by Jonny Rico

March 7 2013
TIJUANA, BC.- Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente achieved their third victory in the Copa Bridgestone Libertadores in as many games. This time their victim was none other than reigning FIFA Club World Cup Champion as well as reigning Copa Libertadores champions Corinthians of Brazil.

The Xolos now sit comfortable in first place of group five with nine points out of three games. While Corinthians remain right behind the Mexicans with four points. Millonarios of Colombia and San Jose of Bolivia round out the rest of group five with three points and one point respectfully.

The game:

A tough battle was expected from this game, as both teams would be gunning for the three points. And it didn’t take long to get the actions going, Fidel Martinez had the first goal scoring opportunity of the match in the second minute of play but his shot was blocked off for a corner kick.

It would take the Brazilians about 15 minutes to settle down and get use to the artificial turf at the Estadio Caliente. But once they did they started to do what Brazilians do best; play football. Corinthians would find the back of the net twice in the first half, but both times Paulinho was flagged for offsides.

With Corinthians now attacking as well, Xolos had some space to take advantage of. And they nearly did; U.S. international Joe Corona fed a through ball to Colombian striker Duvier Riascos who was now one on one with the Brazilian goalkeeper. Riascos tried to chip the ball over the keeper but it went too high.

After that the game became a midfield war. Many fouls were committed on both side, and not many more goal scoring opportunities. 0-0 was the score at the break.

For the second half the same midfield battle continued, neither team would give an inch. Pablo Guerrero of Corinthians had the first big chance of the second half when in the 59th he dribbled past two Xolos defenders and had a low powerful shot that Cirilo Saucedo has able to block.

Xolos answered right back on the very next play with a long range shot by Cristian Pellerano that the goalkeeper Cassio was to save with a diving block.

Five minutes later the Estadio Caliente erupted in passion when Captain Javier Gandolfi was able to push in the ball into the net with his back heal to give the Xolos the lead. Fernando Arce had taken a free kick from the left side; Pablo Aguilar beat the keeper to the ball and flicked in a cross with his head. After several rebounds Gandolfi was able to push in the ball.

After the goal Corinthians went all out attack in search of an equalizing goal. All three of their substitutions were made after the Xolos goal, and all three were attack minded. But the Brazilians quickly hit the big defensive wall of Tijuana and were not able to cause any danger on Cirilo Saucedo’s goal.

The Xoloitzcuitles will now host Queretaro in the 10th week of Liga MX on Saturday, and then travel to Sao Paulo to face Corinthians once again, next Wednesday night.

Xolos 0–1 Gallos Blancos : Queretaro defeats Tijuana
The visitors walk into safe land

by Jonny Rico

March 9 2013
The Tijuana Xolos suffered their fourth loss of the season this time to Club Queretaro. The game on Saturday night was for the tenth week of the Liga MX.

Club manager Antonio Mohamed presented nine changes from his usual starting lineup, to give his players some rest; this of course with the Copa Libertadores match next Wednesday against Corinthians in Brazil in mind. Only goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo and central defender Pablo Aguilar remained in the starting lineup.

THE GAME

Queretaro got an early chance to open the score in the first minute of play. Amaury Escoto took a long range shot that Cirilo Saucedo was able to block off, Wilmer Cosme was ready to pounce on the rebound but Saucedo was able to pick up his rebound.

Xolos answered right back. In the eight minute Richard Ruiz sent in a cross to Danny Marquez who controlled the ball with his chest put the charging goalkeeper was able to save his shot.

One minute later Richard Ruiz again from the right side sent in a cross that found Danny Marquez’s head. The keeper Garcia was able to get a hand on the ball and sent it to the cross bar. Diego Olsina got a head on the rebound and also sent it to the crossbar.

The game got stuck in midfield from that point on. Tijuana’s midfield started to gain the upper hand, but never really threatening the ‘Gallos’ goal.

Queretaro was able to strike first on the scoreboard. In the 32nd minute Wilberto Cosme received a pass from Julio Nava and dribbled at the Xolos defense. He was able to skip past Jorge Hernandez on the right side, and entered the penalty area to face Saucedo. Cosme was able to strike the ball pass the charging Saucedo to put the ‘Gallos’ in front 0-1.

After the goal Xolos were able to get a hold of the ball again and push up the field. But the Queretaro team drew back its lines and defended with almost every man. The Xoloitzcuintle team was unable to penetrate the Queretaro defense. Xolos went into half time down by one goal.

The second half started off the same way as the first half ended; with Xolos enjoying the majority of the possession and Queretaro defending with all eleven players. But no real danger was being caused on Sergio Garcia’s goal.

In the 63rd minute second half substitute Bruno Piceno had a shot from outside of the box that came close to equalizing the game. The Club Tijuana youth product took advantage of a poor clearance from the Queretaro defense after a corner kick, and hit the ball first time. The ball went just wide, but gave the optical illusion that it was in the net.

The Xolos continued with the pressure, moving the ball around in the Queretaro side of the field. But they never really produced any goal scoring opportunities. Mohamed sent in the reinforcements. Fernando Arce and Alfredo Moreno were brought onto the game, as well as the fore mentioned Xolos youngster Bruno Piceno.

Xolos ended the match with an attack minded team with three forwards (Moreno, Marquez and Enriquez) and attack minded midfielders (Arce and Piceno).

But in spite of this Xolos could not find the equalizing goal.

In the 42nd minute Luis Angel Landin had a chance to seal the victory for Queretaro when he had a wide open goal to head the ball in. But Landin’s header went straight to Saucedo’s hands.

The game would end with 0-1 and the Cosme goal was all the difference in this one. With this loss the Xolos remain with 16 points and would potentially drop to 8th place depending on Sunday’s results.

Change of date for Toluca vs Xolos
The game will be played on Saturday instead of Sunday

by Jonny Rico

March 22 2013
SAN DIEGO, BC.- Mexican Soccer Federation has informed that the championship rematch between Deportivo Toluca and Xoloitzcuitles De Caliente for the 12th week in Liga MX has had a schedule change on the request of the Toluca side.

The matchup at the Estadio Nemezio Diez was originally programed for Sunday, March 31 at 12:00 PM (10:00 AM Pacific Time). The new time for this match will be Saturday, March 30 at 5 PM (4:00 PM Pacific Time). This game will now be played on the last day before the spring time change happens in all of Mexico.

This reschedule of the match was requested by Toluca, but it benefits both sides. Both Toluca and Xolos will have midweek Copa Libertadores matches in South America and could use the extra day rest.

Toluca will be traveling to Uruguay on Thursday April 4 to face Club Nacional. Toluca are currently in third place in group one with five points, right behind Boca Jrs who has six and Nacional who has seven points.

Tijuana will be facing San Jose De Oruro in Bolivia on Wednesday, April 3. Xolos are still in first place with nine points despite the loss to Corinthians. A win in Bolivia could mathematically assure Club Tijuana a ticket into the playoff rounds of the Copa Libertadores.
