5 tequilas full of flavor

The Top 5 Tequilas are all showstoppers. These Tequilas are not only great but they have subtleties you may not expect. My advice to you is to drink them slowly and let all the flavors develop.

5.-Tequila Fortaleza Blanco ($50)

An old school Tequila made by Guillermo Erickson Sauza. This is beautifully made, aromas of agave and pepper dominate the nose. It’s flavors are all agave but in a very polished way, ending with some spice notes. To me this is textbook Tequila made a master craftsman.

4.- Riazul Tequila Añejo ($50)

This is a tremendous buy. If I could only buy one Tequila this would be it. The aromas start slow, with some burnt sugar, flowers and spices. But once you taste it, it wins you over. It has no hard edges or hallow parts.

It starts with vanilla and toasty oak and goes to citrus and lots of cinnamon. This has a great finish. A steal at $50.


3.- Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Añejo 2010 ($100)

I’ve enjoyed this Tequila from some years now. Like wine, every year it is not the same, and that is one of the qualities I really love about it.

The 2010 is one of my favorites (along with the 2003). Beautiful aromas that start with light agave and herbs that turn to strong caramel. The flavors are like those from a very fine scotch. Sweet and complex with a silky texture. The finish is neatly framed by a touch of oak.

2.- Tequila Herradura Selección Suprema Extra Añejo ($300)

Great aromas of caramel, orange peel and sweet spices. Flavors of clove and vanilla wrapped in a very soft texture with a hint of heat at the mid palate, the finish is long with cooked agave and dried fruit notes.

1.- Tequila Excellia Reposado ($50)

Another brilliant effort from master distiller Carlos Camarena (Along with No. 10 El Tesoro de Don Felipe). This Reposado is all about complexity. The aromas start with notes of vanilla and herbs that turn to flowers and olives. The flavors are very smooth and complex, from subtle oak to spices, it needs time in the glass to fully develop. Aged in Cognac and Sauternes casks. Amazing stuff here.

This is probably my favorite Blanco. BTW... it is know as Tequila Los Abuelos in Mexico.
