I will be moving to the Rosarito area in a couple of months for at least a year. Do I have to get permission to stay that long?

Well hello there. I can't wait for your relocation
You can get a visitors visa when you get here from customs. It costs about $18 USD and is good for 6 months. Someone else can chime in that knows better, but you can get the FM2 or 3 once you are hear and show how you are supporting yourself. I will be doing that this summer so I'll let you know how it goes.

You have my permission.... Let's see, I have been here 5 years and I have not asked for permission fom anyonone; not US; MEX, Family; much less, ex-wife, girl-friend, etc...
So, stuff that info in your backpack... (billybag) and go waltzing Matildilda....
Pack up your all your bags and woes.....
If you must barter your life, make sure you are living.
