This is not exactly "where to eat" but it's TJ food related

I always feel so awkward when eating out in TJ. I never know what is the "proper" method of tipping. Especially in those establishments where you have to go up front to pay (Sanborn's for example). Is 15-20% still standard? Do you just leave it on the table? Half the time it is already bussed before you are done paying. I am also worried about the money getting swiped. So being a semi smart guy that I like to think I am, I thought I would watch what the locals did on my next outing. So last night I spot these guys at a near by table who were about done. And of course, it didn't appear that they left a tip. So much for that bright plan.
Tijuaneses Americans in TJ drive like crap, Get your Mexican Insurance here.

Not to put down Mexicans, but what i have seen, they don't tip as much as us gringos. I tip when the service is good. And when the service is great, i tip well. I don't think the %, i think how much will it take to show the guy/girl i am very happy and full.

The standard tip in Mexico is still 10%, and you can leave it on the table.

Some of my observations on tipping in Mexican restaurants

1) 10% -15% seems the norm at waiter service restaurants.

2) I usually give the tip directly to waiter/waitress or leave it on the change tray

3) When paying with a credit card there is a place to leave a tip. This includes Sanborns where the cashier asks if I would like to leave a tip.

4) Tips are less common at small, cheap places. But appreciated.

I've been told by locals 10 percent is the norm. Depending on the service I leave 15 to 20 percent.
