Ok, so we had a great time in TJ, but I worry about my SUV there. The same day my huband arrived the police tried to take the car saying that he was not permitted to drive it without me on board. They only canceled the tow truck when he dialed Aduana. So today he was at the beach in Rosarito and someone tried to force the lock. We only have the manufacturer alarm, so I guess I'll be investing in better system. The club was on the steering wheel, so who knows what they wanted. He has only been there since Saturday...lol.

Does he have a license to drive? or was he cited for driving with a Mexican license with American plates? Be careful where you park your car always try to park in secure areas.

What kind of SUV is it? Is it newer? What part of Rosarito did that happen?

I was actually dumb enough to leave my wallet in the car today while I was at the beach near Papas and Beer. It was still there when we got back, but I won't be doing that again! Driving an older SUV helps I think.

It and 05 Chevy Equinox and he was parked near the beach just a couple blocks from the beer and papas. He was not cited for anything because the officer had nothing to go on, he was just looking for fast money I believe.

When I lived in New York City my car was a constant target with California plates. The break-ins stopped when I got an alarm with a blinking red light.

I have Ohio plates, so I am sure that could make me a target. We are looking into an alarm now. Also, my husband was not parked in a public lot, he was parked along a little road leading to the beach. I think he would have been better off in a lot where there are more people.

I think the newer car and mid west plates might be hurting you as well. I would probably try to get California plates if you can. Some people even sell their newer cars to drive older ones. I make it a habit to not wash my car until absolutely necessary or if we are having company. I have also heard leaving your dog in the car with windows down can be better than locked up tight with an alarm, but I don't know about that. I think my dog would stink up the car too much! More people around is always a deterrent. I parked right by Papas and Beer when I left my wallet in the car. Keep it in plain view as much as possible by as many people as possible.

Narcos love to ride around in SUVs and big trucks. I drive an 87 Ford Escort, I call it my anti car-jacking car. No gang banger in his right mind would want to ride around in it.

My husband has gotten stopped twice in my truck without me. They tried the tow truck thing also. I guess he gave them money. I now always go with him he only has a mexican lic no usa.

I know a few people who have been fined for drining with Americna plates and all they have is Mex Drivers license. Its not a bogus charge but you can normally get out of it for little money. If not it will cost you over 100 dollars for the tow truck and fines.

Does anyone know why that law is in affect? Is it to deter theft of American cars? The Mexican Police cannot validate US registration or Insurance so that could be why.

It actually is not illeagal. We have verified this more than once through aduana. I have a permit for the truck and by law your spouse can drive the car as well as a mother,father, child, brother or sister. He has to carry mine and my son's birth certificate and his, an official copy of our marriage license and the car's paperwork. He has been stopped and checked by even the federal police and passed inspection. He even was involved in an accident. We called Aduana just last week to verify this because we always get a different answer. They gave us the page, law number and paragraph number for reference if we have more trouble.

That's good to know about if you have a permit he can still drive . I do know locals who have been fined and I have seen the tickets but never checked to see what was checked off for the infraction. My girlfriends sister was one of them I was with her when she got stopped. The cop threatened to take the car but said If I had a US license I could drive her back and he would just write a ticket.
She tried to get the fine either dropped or reduced but to no avial
So I know there was or is some sort of restriction on driving a US car with just a Mexican drivers license.

I find it odd that he has been stopped twice. Sounds like he is being singled out for some reason. I have driven in Mex for 35 years and have never been stopped.

He went through a federal check point and I am sure with Ohio plates in Guanajuato MX they decided to inspect him. In TJ, he was pulling out of a parking space and a moto cop stopped him and tried to tow the truck. I don't know the answer for him being stopped but I know that we have tried to make absolute sure that he is legally driving my car there b/c I am still paying the car and DO NOT want it taken away by Mexico Police!

if you can get the onine statement of someone being able to drive your vehicle in TJ that would be great. I dont have a problem with my wife and I driving any of our cars since we both have US license and plates, but I dont cross our 2006 Nissan Armada into TJ anymore. Its been towed, cited, and wanted to be taken away by cops. At all times the reason was BS. So we just opted to leave it in the US. I leave it at work with a camera system on it all night and day and restricted access to the warehouse. I cross it only when we are heading right across the border to the US the same day. Not a good idea to have a newer SUV in TJ during these times.
I drive my saturn (bumper car) in TJ only and a 1963 International scout. The scout has a temper and sometimes it doesnt want to start so a thief would have a hard time with it. The saturn is basic (no power anything) as plain as can be.
