A tech at a local computer store diagnosed it as such.

What is it?
Brand [model number]
How old
what operating system 2000,XP, Vista, [Home,Premium, Pro]
How much ram [memory],ram speed
CPU speed and type
how large is the hard drive/drives
Interesting but not important [unless your a big gamer]
Video card
The reason for these questions
To put a value on the computer before you spend money.
Computers go down in value faster than a new car.
not quite as fast a used sex protection but close.
Unless it is some kind of state of the art computer, [graphics,multi-media, CAD, Server]
It may be cheaper to buy new.
It has been my experience that white box's computers are much more expensive than Brand Name.
Years ago they where the way to go but, not anymore.
Unless you have some kind of special need.
at Costco USA not Mexico for 599.99 includes legal software not copied so you can get all you updates.
for instance, see below, they have cheaper also the one below is a gateway they have a ZT brand that is even cheaper.
PLUS free up date to the new windows7 that the techs that have running it say blows Vista out of the game.
Plus a no hassle warranty up to 90days you can take it back for any reason,
plus a warranty that is guaranteed by company that will be there yrs later.
The white box boys come and go sometime overnight.

If you can cross the best bet is almost anywhere in the USA
as far as I know only one laptop at a time is allowed to bring into Mexico without a large tax 17% plus.
or hope for the green light.
One of my Mexican Citizen Doctor friends got caught not declaring, they fined plus kept the item. [That sucks]
If you are US citizen you can just turn around and try another day.
I guess with a degree he couldn't say I didn't know.
Sorry for the rant just my opinion.

I was going to suggest that too its probably cheaper to buy a up to date computer? i have never really heard of the mother boards failing per say unless stuck by lighting. What usually fails is the power supply I am assuming the motherboard is atx a power supply would be around 50 bucks, If you do decide to get a new computer look at it this way you could save the other one for parts or make a couple of bucks parting it out.
I don't know your situation buts here is a link to check out:

Thanks for the info...
the computer is only 9 months old, but I think what happened is there was a short in the wiring in the outlet that I plugged it into, and I am sure that is what fried it. Because I had it on in Vegas where I moved from just the day prior and it was fine. I don't have the finances to purchase a new one, so that is why I was looking into repairing this one. If it were ancient, then yes I would go that route.
Thanks again for all your help. That does really suck about your friend.
Have a good day...
