In the lot where I park I recently saw a guy working on a car. Turns out he's a roadside mechanic, meaning he will come to where ever you car dies and fix it.

He speaks good English. If I remember correctly, his name is Freddie. (I have no idea how good he is; only that he seemed competent. He charged 1000 pesos to fix the timing belt on the car in the parking lot.)

Here's the information on his card:

Mechanica En General
Trabajos Garantizados
Servico a Domicilio Las 24 horas

(664) 217-5528

Has anyone tried this guy since this post?

I do not drive my car that often because I take the trolley to work. My car was fine two weeks ago when I last drove it. Last night I was going to drive to SD to shop. My car is completely dead, no cranking or noise and no lights when you try and start it. Also the key is stuck in the ignition and I can not get it out. I am assuming my battery is dead and I do not have any other problems. My car is at my apartment in zona rio in the under ground parking so it would be hard to tow it out without having to push it up the steep ramp.

I guess I will give this guy a call tonight or tommorow.

Freddie saves the day.

To finish my story. I left work early Friday with a friend and drove to my apartment in TJ. We tried to jump start my car but it would not turn over. My friend is Mexican and grew up in TJ and still has family there but she did not know anyone that could help me. I asked the guy that manages my apartment complex but he did not know anyone either. I was starting to get a little nervous trying to figure out how I could get my car fixed when I canot drive it or get a tow truck into the garage.

At 5pm I called Freddie. He picked up in a few rings. I spoke in Spanish at first asking if he knew English. He said yes so I told him my car dilema. At first he thought it was one of his friends pulling a joke on him. But I explained I got his number off the internet and he rembered giving an American guy his card about 7 months ago. Freddie said he would call me Saturday morning since he was not able to drive his own car since he was working on it so he need to try and use a friends car. I gave him my # and where my place was.

Saturday morning it was still pouring rain. I had not herad from Freddie so I called him around 11:30am. He said he tried to call me a few times but my phone never did ring. I said that is all right but can he get to my place and help me. He said if I could wait until the rain stopped by him he had to walk to borrow someones car and he would pick up his tools and come to my place. I told him I would call him in two hours and check in with him.

I called him back two hours later and he said he was on his way and be there in 30 minutes. Freddie showed up 30 minutes later. He tested the car battery and it was dead. We drove to the Autozone and I purchased a new car battery for 1000 pesos with a 5 year warranty. He put the car battery in and put the car back togather and it started up right away.

Freddie lived in LA for 20+ years and SD for a few years. He worked as a mechanic in LA/SD and had certifications. He has his own shop that he runs in Eastern TJ about 30 minutes from Zona Rio.

I asked Freddie how much he wanted and he said 400 pesos. I paid it and gave him a tip. I told him that I was going to update the site with my story. He said he is really looking for business and he is willing to travel to help anyone out. He speaks fluent English.

If it was not for Freddie, I am not sure what I would have done. If anyone needs a mechanic they should give him a call.

Good story and great info!
I do not always drive the best vehicles around TJ for several reasons, and it is good to know of a mechanic that will come to me if needed. The price is very reasonable for a home visit ( or side of the road visit if necessary ). Thanks for sharing, I will add him to my list.

Wow dead battery, who would thunk that. Glad there was an experienced mechanic to change your battery. What next, the windshield wipers?
