Hi,

I have enjoyed reading this board and have found a lot of very useful information.

I have many questions about the apartments at Rio Infonavit.  I can talk to landlords with apartments for rent here, but I would prefer to talk to other people who have no incentive to be misleading or dishonest.

What options are available here for high-speed internet?

I have read that Cablemas and Telnor are the two main sources of high-speed internet, are both of these available here?

I see many small Sky satellite dishes attached to these apartment buildings, do they offer high-speed internet?

Do these buildings have elevators?

Is it safe to walk from here to the border crossing at night?

Do they have security guards or cameras here?

Are there many gringos that live here?

Has anyone heard of any robberies here?

I have read in this forum that these buildings are about 10 years old which surprised me - from the outside I thought they were much older.  How well constructed are these buildings?  Do tenants encounter many electrical, plumbing, etc. problems?

It would be great if I could communicate with someone who lives here or is familiar with the apartments at Rio Infonavit.

Feel free to PM me.

Thank you,

Gary

Hi Gary....Gary?
We have like 23 Garys here is it the water? smile.gif smile.gif

Welcome to the site

Cablemas is the way to go I have basic cable and high speed internet for 70 dollars a month.

Some Apartment complexes in Zona Rio do have robberies and car break in and get stolen. A member here had two cars stolen in the same place within a year I think.

Which Complex is this?

Hi,

Infonovit Rio is in zona rio, right across the street from the New City Condominiums. It takes up the block bordered by Boulevard Paseo del Centenario, General Manual Marquez de Leon, Blvd. Padre Kino, and Blvd. Independencia. I think there are about 40 5-story buildings in the complex.

Thanks.

telnor has dsl, and is available. i dont believe cablemas services those buildings, as they dont the brown buildings (where i lived for 5 years) across the street.

sky is available, but with no internet service.
they have no elevators and yes, it is safe to walk to the border at nite.

there are many gringos living there, but no cameras nor securtiy guards and yes there is crime there as well.

and they are well over 10 years, i'd guess 25.

small 2 br, board member ryu actually lived there for a short time.

peace

Thanks for the info CB.

I was interested in those brown apartments buildings also.

How did you like living there?

From the few ads I have seen, I get the impression these are mostly 3 bedroom, 1-2 bathroom apartments that run $500-650, is that correct?

I was also interested in finding information about these other apartments in the area:

4 5-story apartment buildings on General Manuel Marquez de Leon between Blvd. Centenario and Blvd. Via Rapida Oriente.
across the street from Ley's grocery/department store.
637-3161; bldg. at General Manuel Marquez de Leon #10010.
683-6283, 663-9064; bldg. #3
684-7817, 681-3888; bldg. #4

1 5-story apartment building on Calle Salvador Nova near Blvd. Centenario.
261-8813

1 4-story apartment building on Calle Salvador Nova 1023 near Blvd. Via Rapida Oriente.
684-7817, 681-3888

Thanks

i paid 500 bucks + 40 HOA. they are all 3 br 1 and a half bath.
i had one break in into my vehicle in those 5 yrs. a neighbor had 2 cars stolen, and just last week a lady was accosted at screwdriver point. you must always be wary in TJ. the blue ones will be much cheaper.

in all those buildings, im sure they speak a little english. as many gringos are living in the area.
you should try calling/visiting them to get a feel for living in a foreign country.
peace

I know exactly the place you are talking about. I think its a little overpriced and not very secure if your living alone. CB do you know many gringos living alone in these apartments?

Gary do you have to live close to the border?
I agree with CB I would spend some time in the area first before making a decision.
Good Luck and let us know if you have any other questions smile.gif

Its important for me to be able to walk to the San Ysidro border crossing. I don't have a car and I don't want to rely on buses or taxis. I realize that I will probably have to pay more and be a little less secure but I can deal with that.

The area looks safe when I walk around there but I do get the impression that it can be dangerous at times from some of the people I have talked to there. I guess one thing I can do to be a little more secure is find an apartment high off the ground.

True... I feel safe walking around there day and night but remember, despite all the highrise apartments around there, the area as a whole is not really "residential." Kind of like living in downtown SD or any downtown for that matter, you'll run into all sorts of people and kind of have to be on your gaurd when out on the streets, just don't get too paranoid.

In regards to the blue buildings, the farther away you are from Calimax, the nicer it is. I would try to live near the preschool as their is usually a safer feel there versus the side near Calimax. A lot of stray dogs on that side as well.

I know a couple who recently moved out of the blue Rio Infonavit housing. They told me that in the last year or two the quality of life there has seen a big drop with increased drug activity and prostitution. They had a neighbor who would "service" three or four johns a day in the back bedroom while her small kids were watching TV in the living room. They told me that it was becoming quite common throughout the complex although I guess some of the moms make the kids stand outside in the hallway until they got business "taken care of". Once the Johns were gone they would be down in the parking lot scoring drugs.

So sad...
