Why does the idea of moving to Tj give you goose bumps when those kinds of disappearances and murders go on every day in the U.S., including cities where the homicide rate is still higher than it is in any Mexican city?
I've lived in Tj for 19 years without incident. The chances of anything bad happening to you on a scale of 0 to 10 is a 2, depending on how often and how far you travel about the city; i.e., as long as you don't hang out with or knowingly do business with those that have ties to drug trafficing/organized crime.
Perhaps that young man was an innocent victim of foul play, but I wouldn't rule out foul play on his part completely yet.

Yet, he's dead. There are many, many, many people who would risk bringing drugs across the border for perhaps $2,000. And it looks like he got involved in the mess.

I think always good to get security information from people who live in Tijuana.
The media loves to make it look like the Texas Chain Saw Masacre.

The US media certainly can hype things when they want to.

That's an interesting point. I hadn't really thought about it, but if an American is killed in TJ or Rosarito it is a much bigger story than the same thing happening in San Diego. I guess the reason I would point to is that it is a way of tying possibly random or theft-related homicides into the massive murder rate that is a result of the drug war. I think it's false logic, but it goes in the face of the argument that the drug war is mostly between cops and the cartels, which reassures those that are crowing about how dangerous Mexico is that their fears are justified. Sorry if that was a long way to make my conclusion.
I guess the bottom line is that you could be the victim of crime anywhere, there are safer places to live than TJ, and worse ones, on both sides of the border.

Was he killed at the scene or was his body dumped there. If it's the latter, then it's possible that he was killed in the US which would mean somebody else drove the vehicle to TJ. Many people use pot, booze, and toot without involvement in other "criminal" activity or violence. It seems just as plausible that he could've indulged in the said substances with or without the persons involved with killing him and then taking his vehicle. Maybe he was carjacked by someone wanting to get south of the border. Maybe the truck was needed for some drug cartel connected activity. Many US vehicles are stolen for such activities.
IMHO, too many unanswered questions remain to conclude very much from the existing evidence. Then again, I could have overlooked something.

The baja authorities have changed their report. He had no cocaine in his system only alcohol and marijuana.

So if you drink and smoke pot you should be killed? I wouldn't have many friends left.

It was later retracted by the police.
Either way, doing that in Tijuana is pretty stupid.

Well, it kinda makes me think that at first they said that because they like people to think that only people messing with drugs etc get killed (which is pretty much true) But since it was a gringo, they probably figured out they need to fix it because the US authorities would do thier own test and discredit, OR the US already did and then they retracted... Its just kinda weird and makes me suspecious of the MX authorities.. they pretty much can say what they want, and if its a MX Citizen who will know.?. BUT in this case the body went home Im sure so they had to say change thier story...
