That's a complicated question. Since neighborhoods can change within a few blocks of each other. In Otay there is a wealthy area near the University but down the hill is one is the poorest colonias.

For foreign looking people the Centro is a good place to stay out of.

Yes, the largest concentration of nice places are the colonias west of Blvd. Agua Calient (around the TJ country club), Playas de Tijuana and parts of Otay (like Otay Contituyentes).

The safest place to live is a gated neighborhood or a street where the neighbors look after each other.

Yes, pretty much any gated community is safe.

Very few Americans live in Tijuana. More live in Rosarito and other beach communities. I've heard now you can get bargain rents in the American communities on the coast due to the high vacancy rates.

Oh , i thought alot of Americans lived on Playas Tijuana area. Are Americans moving out of the American communities?

There are a variety of reasons to move from one area of Tijuana to another. Crime is only one of those reasons. Why the negative take? There are "American" communities south along the coast - but Americans (actually - USians) are more spread out within Tijuana.

I would just stay away from Mariano Matamoros, Centenario, La Presa, La Mesa, and Los Pinos. Those seem to come up in the news more often that others. Specialy the 1st 2.

What are peoples thoughts on an American living in Libertad? I need something pretty close to the border. Thanks! Great Forum too btw, just what I've been looking for to help me move.

Libertad is not as crime-ridden as it was 20 years ago, but it's still predominantly a lower working class colonia, and thus has among the lower rents in town. If I were going to live there, I'd make sure the residence or apartment complex had secure off-street parking if I had a vehicle; strong doors, and bars on the windows.

Libertad is the colonia around Blvd Chuatemoc going towards the airport, right?

It's the colonia mostly built on the hill just east of the San Ysidro bordering xing, which extends as far south as the boulevard you describe that's the main route between the Zona Rio and the airport.

I think that question should read What areas of Tijuana are not as dangerous to live in?

I know of kidnappings and killing everywhere.

Anyone that's not trying to sell a house know of anywhere with no crime or bars on the windows?
Or the big one where people slow down in front of schools or stop a stop lights.

Sorry about this but until we complain nothing is going to change.

I used to tell my USA friends that centro(red light district the bars were safe because they needed the tourists) how about last Friday night?)

I asked a friend one time why the driving was so bad here in Tijuana he told me it only cost 200 pesos to have a driver license here.
I said wow really I didn't know that. He laughed at me and said have you ever met a cop you couldn't get to look the other way for 200 pesos.
Why do you thing everyone runs red light 10,15,30 seconds after they have turned, impunity.
When that stops the corruption will have left the system.

I went to check out a place in Libertad, but I didn't care for the area to be quite honest with you.I prefer living Colonia Independcia because it's relatively quiet, decent neighbors, and I'm about a 10- 15 minute walk to centro which works out just fine for my needs

I almost moved to Libertad because broadband was available. US cellular reception was awful though.
I think thats why I settled for Colonia Independencia which gave me both.

I used to walk all over the place from there. I always enjoyed taking the stairs at Morelos to the downtown park and raspados.

I live in and area off Diaz Ordiz its not the most beautiful place but all my neighbors have lived there for 20 years or more. They look out for anyone that looks out of place. I have been going every two weeks to check on the house. My husband just spent 1 month here in Tijuana but is now back in his state. Its quiet and we like it there.

Does anyone know about la colonia Felipa de XXXXXX? It is near the bus station. From the way it has been discribed it may not be the safest area. It is only temporary until we find our own place, but a friend of a friend has an empty house there they he offered up. I'm just nervous because even he sounded ify and we are not from TJ. Thanks!
