Does anyone know how much locals in TJ pay for a mordita. For minor traffic infractions to more serious offenses like drunk driving.

Assuming the person actually committed the offense and knows how to negotiate.

From my personal experience a regular traffic "ticket" should be no more than $20...you can probably get away with giving them $5-10!!!

Drunk driving is another story but still do-able...You're looking at $40-100 depending on where you get caught and how drunk you are. If it's a cehck point then you're screwed...I would never offer money cause there's just too many cops around...

Drugs...this is delicate but do-able also...my sister-in-law's ex was caught with an 8 ball (look it up) and had to give up $300...plus they left the drugs!!!

And for automatic weapons you really have to come up with enough for the cop to retire in another state or country.

I dont pay them anything. I tell them to write me a ticket and never pay it. They sometime try to pull the old "you cant leave mex. until you pay" so I bring out my print out of the city website stating you can pay in san ysidro, after they just either tell me to go or write me a ticket. I had my 1st ticket framed. and I would think of driving drunk in TJ, just the 'what if" factor of being pulled over by a good cop that will throw the book at me.

Not to mention the strong possibility of killing some innocent person. Drunk drivers should get the book thrown at them. Cops who would accept a bribe to let them go should get equal punishment.

I am sorry but I agree! Actually I am not sorry.

I am against victimless crimes like seat belts, helmet wearing and personal drug use....

But to me driving under the influence is like shooting a gun while spinning in a circle.

You never know when your imparied driving will kill someone and ruin a whole family's life

You might get away with it every time you do it but what if you don't make it home all right and wind up dead yourself.

Don't forget there are worse things than being dead.

What if you loose all your limbs and are burned from head to toe? What if you are still alive but can't speak or hear or move?

If you drink (and there is nothing wrong with having a good time) but after even if it is only a couple drinks

The problem I find is that its not clear when you've had too much. Is 6 tecates over a six hour period too much?

One time I was stopped by a police women in the Centro while walking. She said my breath stunk of alcohol. But I only had drunk four dos exquis. She let me go when I told her I ways walking towards my Ruta taxi.

Having alcohol on your breath while driving in Tijuana IS a violation of the law. It doesn't matter if you are drunk or not. This is from reading the reglamentos, not what some mordita seeking cop said.

My husband and I stopped at a small store just around the corner from our house, he was going to buy a couple of beers. A cop came and saw him walking arcoss the street to our car and stopped him. Asked him wha the was doing and he told them. they asked if he had any other beer he said no. They then told him he was drunk driving! He was not even in the car. They asked who the truck belonged to and he pointed to me, asked for his DL which he gave and then told him they were going to call a tow truck. They did, he started talking to them and they told him 20 bucks would help, but to leave fast cause they had already called the tow truck and did not want to share it with them! This is just nuts. He has gotten stopped about 6 times now and each time it has cost 20-40 dollars to let them let him go. Oh yea they always tell him not to tell anyone or they will get in trouble. I turn them all in.

If he has done nothing wrong then your husband should simply call their bluff. This is the MO of the TJPD. As soon as they realize that they cannot intimidate you into giving them money they usually give up and leave. They are really just bullies with uniforms and I never back down to a bully.

That's crazy. The police must really dislike your husband.

In the 20 months I've lived here I've been stopped once in my car. It was a Friday night in the Centro. I didn't do anything wrong and the police gave up and left when they saw no money coming.

I see police stop cars all the time in the Centro on weekend nights. I prefer to take a Ruta taxi there.

I don't think its that they dislike him, but if you would see him you might think he was a chole or gang member. Far from it, but he has had cancer and has no hair so he shaves his head, he does wear baggy shorts and I see them always do a double take when we are walking. Heck they really don;t know him and he has been stopped all over. But again 4 out of the 6 times he did make a driving error. Plus when he is with me he is driving and its my truck. I think he just does not want to anger them. Any way its wrong but its also a way of life down here. We deal with it.

Just to keep my anal retentive side in check I'll point out the proper spelling is MORDIDA. Although MORDITA seems more correct, it isn't.

Even with the correct spelling MORDIDA most Americans will pronounce it wrong. Just as almost all mispronounce TODO and other words containing D.

In all fairness it is not only Americans who can't pronounce Mexican Espanol correctly.

Spanish people from Espana (Spain) pronounce Spanish differently.

I bet Chinese people really pronounce Spanish strangely too.

Most countries have different dialects yes. Did you they speak English in Jamaica? Hard to guess it when you're there.

There are a lot of Spanish speaking Chinese in Tijuana, it's just Español Mexicano con un acento Chino.

The original comment was about how the Spanish "D" inside words is not pronounced like the English "D". It is more of a hard "TH" sound. TODO would be more like TOE-THO. There are good pronunciation guides at the beginnings of most dictionaries but many people don't read that part.
