Does anyone know if the Arch is a registred trademark ? I've noticed that the vendors on Revolution dont sell figures of them or anything to do with them. Is this because they have to pay royalty fees or something ?

Probably because it is pretty new. Most all the stuff they sell on Revo is made somewhere else in the country en masse. If they think it would help sales it would show up on products. It's city owned I believe. A pet project of the mayor before Jorge Hank.

I was at it the day it was 'officially' completed. It was very unstable and swaying in the wind. A couple days later they added the support cables. I got the feeling they weren't part of the original design.

They have free small concerts from there. I went to one last year and had lots of fun.

Chiquito I don't know how the vendors stay in business. I heard one guy trying to sell a statue for twenty dollars and ended up chasing the customer down and took seven dollars for it.

Keep in mind the statue probably cost him one or two dollars. Go into central and southern Mexico and you see the same stuff as on Revolucion for half or less the price.

I think they don't sell any souvenirs of it because it is so damn ugly

St Louis' arch signifies the gateway to the west. Tijuana's means the gateway to Latin America.
They almost replaced las tijeras(the scissors), the first monument roundabout on Paseo de Los Heroes with an Angel de la Independencia like the one in Mexico City. That would have been another copy cat move on the part of this city. We already have a Diana Cazadora monument.
Keep it original, like the CECUT ball, El Minarete or the Torre de Agua Caliente. Those are original symbols of the city.

Have any of you seen the Abraham Lincoln Statue in one of the Gloriettas?

Does that have something to do with the Mexican Revoluccion against Napolean?

??? I heard somewhere that it was a gift from the city San Diego. In turn, Tijuana gave San Diego a Benito Juarez statue which is found in that park close to Market Street and the Gaslamp Quarters Downtown.

Yes. The exchange was made official when former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jose Lopez Portillo met. I am glad that they didn't move the Lincoln statue to Otay like Hank had planned.

I didn't know that they had planned to move it to Otay, where would they have put it?. I think it looks fine in that Glorietta next to Baby Rock. The height of the statue screams for attention and that is one of the nicer intersections in town. Also, there are always birds perched on his head, I don't think they would've appreciated the move either.

When I drive guest around they are always surprised to see an Abe Lincoln statue, I mess with them and tell them that he freed mexican slaves too...

In Mexico they tell the children in schools about the story about Abraham Lincoln. He is a very admired man in history for many Mexicans for following his beliefs and even be killed for that.

Its just that they were going to move the statue of Abe Lincoln to an area less transited by Americans, and the statue was a part of a friendship exchange between the US and Mexico. Plus Hank was going to put some Mexico City replica monument in its place.

I don’t know about the exchange of statues; never heard of it before. Do not have concrete facts for this but heard/read somewhere (Wiki? or a Taxi Libre driver, I think) that during the US Civil War, Mexico asked Lincoln to send troops into Mexico to help them fight off whomever. But Lincoln, having recruiting problems as it was during the war, could only send surplus muzzle loading rifles as the newer Henry and breech loading cartridge rifles got into the hands of the Union Army. And Mexico did not forget.

Exactly what did Benito Juarez do for San Diego or the US??? Especially to warrant a statue! I must have been a few seconds late that day for US History class... :?

While on the Civil War, was it Samuel Chase or J.P. Morgan that financed the North almost single handedly? I forgot.

On the haircut thread, I use the barber closest to the Policias station on Constitution (down hill from the East-west Arch street, 1st?) as if you were going to Zona Norte); $5, quick (hate it when I have to sit there for 30 minutes for a five minute job!) and their shaves are great too!. But the girls sound good too; I couldn’t place that place from the directions given.
