How much should one tip the PEMEX gas attendant?

Sometimes they check the oil, check the tires and clean the windows. Sometimes they do nothing but pump gas.

If they just pump gas I don't tip. If they wash the windows or check the oil I give 5 to 10 pesos.

Same here... this is the same amount I tip the baggers at "la súper", the grocery store. This is also how much I tip the "celador", the guy watching the cars in a parking lot.

I pay in dollars and buy in pesos

For example

I tell them 200 pesos and give them $20 dollars they can keep the difference in the 'tipo de cambio'

So in the example I am currently tipping about 10 pesos per $20 dollars

If they do more than pump gas (so I don't have to) I add a little extra usually a buck or 10 pesos.

IM CHEAP. So I dont tip much and my wife forbids me from tipping when Im with her. She's from TJ and she get so pissed when all these people could be doing something worthwhile she says. We only tip the baggers at the stores, the cops that do security in the neighborhood and when we go out to eat (sit down). Parking lot attendants, people dancing on the street, kids doing tricks, dollar boys, etc are out of luck.

She's from TJ and she get so pissed when all these people could be doing something worthwhile she says.

Your wife doesn't think that the Pemex attendants aren't worth tipping, does she not consider it a job? They're not exactly peddling the streets for money... I'm just curious as to why she feels that way.

Of course it's a job. And they most likely get paid for doing it. Not all jobs deserve tips. I make a point of not tipping the guys in parking lots who get in my way with the pretext of helping me back up. THEY are the only thing in the way.

This is my rule for tipping at PEMEX, if they wash the front window 5 pesos, if they only pump gas nothing...if the offer to check oil and more or wash all the windows 10 pesos.....

I guess it just depends on each person's opinion. I tip those guys because they provide a service to me be it pumping my gas, watching my car, or bagging my groceries. I also do it because I make decent money and pay such low rent and I feel that what goes around comes around. I am very careful with my money but I try not to be stingy with it… Please do not take this as me calling anyone here stingy for not tipping, “To each his own”.

I will not, however, leave a tip at coffee shops or juice bars that have a tip jar at the counter. Now if they bring me coffee to my table then yes. I do tip bar tenders, go figure... they sort of do the same job as a juicer or a cofee shop person.

Well sorta...bar tenders also make specialty drinks and you tip them they can hook u up with a little more extra "juice"...Starbucks and their tip jars---NO TIP!!! All these guys do is pour coffee in a cup! I would consider tipping Subway employees because they may take extra care in the prep of your food and maybe add an extra slice of turkey but coffee? No way!

my rule is simple..

if someone has to serve me instead of me doing it, they should be compansated for..

here in boston, their are few gas station that offer full service at self service prices...

i tip them because because i could have gone to self service...

i know in tj , most are full service and you do have to watch the pump meter same time to make sure you got what you paid for... :shock:

but, their are couple self service gas stations in tj also ...if you want to pump it by your self...

Really? I haven't seen any...it seems all gas stations here are Pemex...I haven't seen any other "brand"...

The good doctor said there are some self service gas stations around town, not that they are not Pemex... there is a Pemex on the Via Rapida going east that is right before you pass Home Depot and Costco. That one is self service.

I beleive the one on the end of Revolucion, by the Torre Agua Caliente, is also self service.

PEMEX, Petróleos Mexicanos , is run by the government... as is all of the oil industry in Mexico.

This is very important because some will cheat you if they think they can get away with it.

I get out of my car and check that the meter is at zero when they start. It may be simpler to go to a self-service PEMEX.

She's been americanised. She figures, if she goes to the US parks at a Wal-Mart and does not have to pay to park there and pay for some guy to tell her "i'll keep an eye on your car" why should she do it in TJ. Same with gas, she rather pump it herself to avoid any issues. By issues I mean that a few years ago her brother that gave them 50 pesos to pump into the tank (the only 50 pesos he had on him) the attendant pumped 54 or something like that and demanded he pay him the extra $$$ which he did not have and told him, "thats why I gave you only 50", attendant got pissed and all the attendant beat him up. NO ONE from the station did anything. Story goes the guy that started the beating was not a happy camper about an 1hr later.
So my wife is essentially a cheap person from TJ. If it was up to her she would not pay to get in/out of the plazas.

I always pull up to the pump so that I am even with it and can see it easily.

I do like that they pump the gas and am happy to give them a small gratuity.

I am also happy to give the parking guys a gratuity if they are doing a good job of directing traffic. If they are just making a show if it then I don't
