This is the very first hotel you will see when crossing into Mexico.


It used to be a Holiday Inn and matter of fact if you use your credit card to pay for the room the reciept will show up as Holiday inn Tijuana.
Rooms are around 80 to 90 dollar range and the service is top shelf.
they have a Caliente sportsbook located inside and 2 others within walking distance of each other. If you are a sport better and place some bets use the ole Costanza routine and they will give you a room for around 60 dollars. Ask for a room voucher from the Caliente manager and he will give you a validated voucher good for a discounted room

Cant beat a room for 60 dollars!!!

Note that "Plaza Pueblo Amigo" is basically next door to the hotel, and has restaurants, clubs, and a supermarket, as shown on the Pueblo Amigo website.

Stayed at the Pueblo Amigo on my last stay. Everyone is happy to take care of you. Rooms are large Had a King and you could put another one in the room and not be small. Food was excellent and the service at the bar was excellent also. Everything is easy to get to from the hotel, very convient. Will stay there again.

Before moving here I stayed here often. I believe I paid just under eighty for a room and the service was great. Security is right there in the parking lot watching your car. Never a problem and I highly recommend this as a first hotel

I heard that if you book online they offer better rates...

They also offer gamblers discounts if you bet I believe over 25 dollars in the sportsbook and ask the manager to give you a gamblers discount. and AAA discount as well....

last time i used this hotel, i bet $10 dollers to qualify for discount...if your good at sweet talking , one do not have to place a bet to get a stamped lettle from caliente deak person.

I'll be arriving in TJ rather late on Sunday evening, and I think I'd like to stay at the 'Pueblo Amigo'. Would the Caliente desk be open at 11:00--11:30? I'd like to see if I can talk my way into one of those $60.00 rooms.

I'm not much of a 'sweet talker'. Any tips on how to approach the desk person? What should I say? Should I wander in and place a bet on something first? Perhaps on a baseball game?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Anybody know how late the sports books stays open? I'd like to get in on that gambler's special, but I won't be arriving until about 10:00 pm.

Ekdog they should stay open until the last game is played on TV. They opened up a new game room that is open 24 hours. I think their hours posted at other locations is 8am to 11pm.

Trip report: By the time I got there, it was around 11 p.m. (flew in from Europe) and the sports books was closed, so there was no way to get in on the gambler's special. I asked at the desk and they wanted something like $160 a night for a room. Too rich for my blood, so I had a beer (Bohemia Dark, nice--that must be new) at the bar and then took a cab down to the Hotel San Nicolás on Madero, also recommended on this site. Rented a decent room for $31. Stayed there for a couple of nights. Not in the same class as the Pueblo Amigo, of course, but correcto.

I was struck by the lack of gringos, especially after dark, in the downtown area. In the two days that I was at the San Nicolás, I didn't see anybody at the hotel besides the staff. I think I might have been their only client.

That's why I don't like to negotiate with a hotel with my bag in hand, standing at the front desk. I have spent more than a thousand nights of my life over the past 30+ years traveling in and out of hotels on business. My best deals were always arranged BEFORE arriving at the hotel and via phone/internet/email. When I first made the decision to move to Baja and was looking for a place I got a room at the Grand Hotel on the VIP level which are nicer rooms and with a very nice and private guest lounge/bar for only $68 a night. The desk price was about $180, the internet price was around a hundred as I recall so I emailed the hotel and told them that I would be staying for 4 to 5 days and to give me a better deal.

I thought $68 was great for that mini-suite on the next to top floor at the hotel. You can hang out in the lounge in your robe with a lot of great extra services that made that one of my favorite hotel stays. I also met a very cute staff member that I dated for awhile after moving down here.

i agree with BajaGringo on trying to check in with bag in hand i know they will change the rate if they see someone looking for a room. online is cheaper but i noticed that the reservation systems sometime "goes offline" on a fri... which would force you to call or go to front desk which rate is higher. so if possible try to plan ahead esp if staying near revolution i was trying to stay around there but noticed the rates where high almost same or more then US so i usually stay at hotel prem i found that to be best deal if anyone else has a place like that please let me know.
