Exactly what did Benito Juarez do for San Diego or the US??? Especially to warrant a statue! I must have been a few seconds late that day for US History class... :?

Benito Juarez tried to institute a Constitutional Republic similar to that of the United States (as we used to be) in where the government derived its rights from the people, not the other way around. The reforms didn't stick around too long after he left office though. I suppose the statue is good for representing the ideals.

They should've left bullring intact and turned it into a museum or something, another cultural spot, library, park, I had very wonderful borracheras there more times than I can remember. The truth is, I never really liked seeing bulls sacrificed, so I drank to ease the pain and got comfort from pretty señoritas after each corrida! What tripped me out sometimes was the families that took their kids to see this. I would never take my kids to see such spectacle. Last time I went to a corrida in Playas, it was to take a gringo friend of my brother's, the whole thing seemed so lame, no longer did I have my friends, no more pretty girls, fan clubs, booze, desmadre. He loved it, and asked if I brought him again next bull season.

Check out the rodeos outside of Tecate. There isn't any animal torture, and things can still get rowdy.

Reviving the issue of what Abraham Lincoln did for Mexico. In the Wikipedia article about Benito Juarez there is the following...

"... With its own civil war over, Abraham Lincoln, who had great sympathy to the Juarista cause, invoked the Monroe Doctrine to give diplomatic recognition to Juárez' government and supply weapons and funding to the Republican forces. When he could get no support in Congress, he supposedly had the Army "lose" some supplies (including rifles) "near" (across) the border with Mexico. He would not even meet with representatives of Maximilian. Gen. Philip Sheridan wrote in his journal about how he "misplaced" 30,000 muskets close to Mexico...."

A heck of lot better than that other site post (and worked too!) and the fuzzy thinking that you get a statue in the country that you stole your ideas from...that’s not even close to logic and can‘t fathom it; of course, politics excluded as we all know in that world, there are bridges to no-where and pigs fly.

The guy was pretty dumb to get himself in the position to begin with. As I understand the history books he didn't want to be here to begin with......
