I noticed Thursday morning there was a shortage of police directing traffic around the border. They must have been helping out at the jail.

Traffic was a mess.

The police directing traffic makes traffic even worse.

In Topic: Tipping security guard in my building??

23 August 2008 - 03:50 AM

QUOTE (pinchecabrona @ Aug 21 2008, 12:14 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
As some of you know now, I live in Cacho. My building has a security guard that always greets me at night and offers to help me take out trash and carry up groceries. I don't feel totally comfortable letting him in my apartment, but he seems like a nice guy and does protect the building.

My question is, should I tip him? It's not a matter of IF I can afford to (at he knows I can)...it's more of a question of is it right? I fear that if I tip him, it almost comes across as an insult...or even that tipping implies that it's necessary for my security. I am thinking of the occasional token gift and of course nicer gift during the holidays.

The guy sees I am a well dressed American, with a nice car, in a nice area. I don't want him to tell his other security guard friends in the neighborhood that the gringa throws money around.

What do you guys think? And for those who think I should tip him...how much?

I suppose I should ask my neighbors as well what they think.

If he helps you out, then you should tip him. But - Remember these workers only make ~$2 dllrs an hour so don't be TOO gracious. $1 or $2 dllrs for help is good for you (cheap) and for him (an hour more wage).

In Topic: Magicjack VoIP

I've been paying Cablemas for internet only at approx $35 usd per month which I belive is for the minimum bandwidth (I forget how much, maybe 256kbs ?).
Anyway, this has normally been sufficient for most of my needs including voIP.
Since I've been trying to switch over from Skype (via their pc softfone or the router linked handset)
to MagicJack, the quality of the calls have often been unusably poor.
I'm wondering if others with MagicJack are experiencing this.

Perhaps the bandwidth isn't large enough ?
As I said elsewhere on the board, minor multitasking on the web while using MJ, both get interrupted. sad.gif

Maybe it's your PC? Have u tried using another PC or laptop?

I ordered one also, but I haven't plugged it in yet. The Cablemas Internet that costs $35 is 1.5 MB. You may want to go on www.speedtest.net to see what your actual speed is. I also suggest you don't touch the computer while on the phone. I know, it sucks, but it's the price you pay to using VoIP in TJ. You could upgrade your internet speed to 2 MB but i think it's significantly more expensive, like $60 i think ? Is your computer connected directly to the modem or through a wireless router? Is it a Pentium 4? All of these things may be a factor.

I'll let you know my experience once I plug mine in.

How long did it take you groyalc?

When you get a sentri, where is the sticker installed in your car? What part? Hidden or Visible?

Hey Rich,

Could you post your friend's contact information?  How many 'hours' of service would she provide for $20 - 25
