It appears Magicjack VoIP telephone service may be a good fit for those living in Tijuana.

If anybody has any "hands on" experience with Magicjack I'd appreciate a review.  Thanks.

We have been using Magic Jack for three months. It works great as long as you are not downloading a bunch of things at the same time. But I probably need to upgrade my speed with Telnor. The only drawback for me is that I can't access conference call lines and the computer must be on. I have had Vonage in the past and you don't need to have the computer on and it works with conference call lines. For the price, Magic Jack can't be beat.

In Topic: How can I get Netflix streaming video to work in TJ?

Netflix has an option that allows you to watch movies over the Internet.

Netflix's streaming video isn't supposed to work outside the US; it apparently use IP addresses to determine your location.

Get Hide-my-ip 2009. It costs $25 a year with an online coupon. You can try it free for a few days too before you purchase to make sure it works. Don't be put off by how slow it is when you use the trial version, it works great once you have the full version. Well worth the money. I couldn't log into my company's website to check my reports or hear the live streaming conference calls. Problem solved with this product. (I used it years ago and it worked then as well.) I am on Telnor.

I was told by a dealer that Cricket Broadband works in parts of Tijuana.  (Such as El Centro and Playas.)  Any "real life" information would be appreciated.

I have a Metro PCS phone that uses the Cricket network in San Diego. I can make and receive calls in and around Plaza Rio and for about a mile past Plaza Rio on the Rapida.

I always had some sort of vehicle everywhere I have lived in Mexico (be it a scooter or car) except baja, and the reason why is the police..  Being a single younger guy, I would be a target for the police..  my example is, also the reason I am writing this.:

Now , I know there are some , (MOST) on here have cars, some nice luxury cars etc, but I think the police know those people have money and will fight, but me I would be driving a plain cheap car, and I have no money so I am scared.

Wow! You guys are lucky. I have been stopped plenty of times in the 3 months since I have returned to live here. Once for tinted windows on my Durango. I told him it came from the dealer that way, and when he tried to rip it with his key and nothing happened, he let me go. I have been stopped twice for New Jersey Plates (I bought the car from a couple in San Diego who were from Jersey and I didn't register it for a week). Then the car didn't pass Smog. (Actually, it passed the actual smog tests, but the "fill pipe restrictor" was deemed altered so I failed.) So I got stopped once for not having plates and the cop wanted to impound my car because the CA operating permit is not valid in TJ. Anyhow I now refuse to pay mordidas, so they let me go everytime. BTW- the car is a nice 10 year old SAAB 9-3 with leather interior, so it is not an econo box nor is it flashy. I don't know if they stop me because I am Black, but once they hear my perfect Spanish (I am half Puerto Rican and have lived in Latin America off and on for years), it usually sways my way. I now drive with the NJ Plates and my Operating permit and have not been stopped in the last week. **Knock on Wood!**

That's what i tell my mom.  She wants to come down as well, but they are worried about being detained.  I tell her "really, detained, what more can they do?  Ask you more questions?"  But i have not asked anyone who has crossed with out a passport after this new law on how much of a hassle it is.

Just joined and this is my first post. I love this forum; it's great to know I am not the only Gringo in TJ! Anyhow, my wife forgot her passport last time she crossed. I had mine and our 4 kids' birth certificates. They pulled her passport up on the computer by her name. We were sweating bullets for no reason.  I know this doesn't help if you have no passport, but I thought I'd mention it. I also crossed over with an expired PP about 2 years ago before the supposedly "mandatory" rule. My Sister-in-law's husband crosses all the time without a passport. He is a goverment contractor and works at North Island and has a government I.D.
