Sometimes I forget mine and I have no problems crossing. Never been put into secondary but did run into a few angry agents who told me I would go into secondary next time.
As long as the satellite is pointed in the right direction you can get the channels anywhere as long as you have an SD address. My friend had dish for a year in Ensenada and got all the local channels.
