I actually had a mailman come and deliver mail to my front door. The only people who used the mailbox are the guys who are paid to deliver stuff. He actually knocked and everything, kind of like UPS except all he had was a letter... address to the old occupants (I think). laugh.gif

Ryu that is unsual, In all my time in Tijuana I do not beleive I have ever seen a mail-man or mail-lady for that matter.
Chiquito keep us posted on that. I have had horror stories about Telnor.
Moons ago when I had a place near La Chuleta they were supposed to hook up a land line and never did. This was a period of 3 months so I called them and said forget it.
Tijuana is much more than Revolution ave

I send and receive snail mail via the Mexican Postal Service to and from the usa and between D.F., Puebla and Baja California Norte

Our Mailman drives a motorcycle and comes by only when there is mail. I do get my telnor bills as well as my Mexican bank statements via Mexican Snail Mail

I don't think Telnor is so much a thief as bumbling idiots.

I reccomend http://vonage.com and Axtel/Cablemas in the greater Tijuana area for local phone service

Yep, I've seen the snail mail motorcyclists many times buzzing about the city.

How is the Axtel service and the per minute rate :?:
I wonder if it can be had with only the Cablemas internet service
instead of having to have it attached to the boobtube channels.

FUCKING TELNOR Episode 2

So I get a bill for 790.00 peso from Telnor, a little high but my girl has been calling her relative so fine. I go to the machine and it asks for 1900.00 something peso, WTF!?? I ask them what's up with the pricing difference and they said I only got half the bill? Huh? So I ask for a printout and this girl that works in the Plaza Rio Telnor office (royal bitch, blond and has pimples on her face anyways if you can't speak Spanish well she is condescending to you, seriously) says she can't not until May 18? What the. Anyways, I left because I'm not sure what's going on. Either my girl has been calling her mom in Arizona more than I thought or Telnor royally screwed me over. My girl's visiting her family right now but when she comes back, either Telnor or she is going to get yelled at big time. :x

Have not had any problems with Telnor in 2 years. Sometimes the bill shows up late but that is not Telnor's fault, but the MX postal system. You should keep an eye out for the bill around the billing date, if it doesn't show up you will need to go to the Telnor 'ATM' to get your balance and pay (or Telnor office). Just one of those things you need to do if you live in Mexico...

Also, for long distance service I recommend using a VOIP provider like packet8 or vonage. Their rates for calling the US are FREE and calling most places in Mexico are 7 or 9 cents per minute. Much cheaper than what Telnor charges. We only use Telnor to call local TJ numbers and as our ISP. Not for long distance... and watch those calls to MX cellular phones... expensive.

Thing about the logistics of this... you get a phone line from Telnor, DSL over the phone line, and then you use a US based VOIP provider to make international phone calls to Mexico which is where you have your local Telnor line. Telnor getting screwed on this deal smile.gif

Chiquito, thanks for the update, will update my own situation when I figure out if the gf made the calls or not, at this point I don't even have to bill to determine what happen just had to pay which is part of what is upsetting me. Will also ask the gf to inquire on what the problem is.

Also Chiquito, if you have Telnor DSL, don't you also have a two year contract with them? Can you just cancel?

They may tell you you have a two year contract. They told me this once and it was a lie. When I signed up I was told "sin compromiso" and I could cancel at any time. I carefully read the contract later on and it does say there is a 1 year term when the contract is signed. And I never signed a contract on the DSL. I've had it well over a year and if they try to bill anything else I will demand them to show the signed contract before I pay it. As no such contract exists, I will not pay them. And since I will have no business at all with them, including telephone, what can they do?

We receive letters here from a Mexican collection agency for a previous renter who skipped out on his TelCel cellular bill. As we have no way to forward them we open them and read them. They get very threatening here saying they will essentially break down the doors of the house and take the furniture and appliances to get the payment. A Mexican lawyer I chatted with online said they could not do such a thing until after suing in court and winning a judgement. The cost to do that and have the people actually carry it out would be more than the guy owes so it will never happen. Scarey part is what if they did do it without verifying that that guy hasn't lived here in a long time. How would we get our stuff back? Or could we?

(Chiquito)
My wife is going first thing tomorrow morning to sign up for the cablemodem service and as soon as that is online I am canceling all services with Telnor. And may not pay them anything else just out of spite.

You may want to get some opinions on the cable modem service before you switch. I don't have current information, but as of a couple of years ago, here are the comments that I heard:

* You don't get the advertised speeds
* It's very slow
* It's not reliable (down a lot)
* The network is way oversubscribed

If you telecommute to work at all, the above issues may make it a struggle to work at home.

May be easier for you to patch up the issue with Telnor, remove the 800 peso per month cap on your account, and stick with what you have.

I had cable a couple years ago and most of what you state is true. I do telecommute whenever possible, like every Tuesday and Thursday, Wednesdays and Fridays when possible. I'm just fed up with Telnor. I just put the limit on to lower the costs, that didn't work. I have no need for their telephone service as my Verizon is sufficient for my needs. I wish the Verizon Wireless broadband reached down here to Playas.

What I want to get someday is a satellite based service that I can just take with me wherever I may go. Not for VOIP. Teledesic had me excited but it fizzled out.

The problem with satellite internet service is the propagation delay. It takes longer for the satellite to receive your instructions (like when you click on something on a web site) and get the requested information to you. This makes it a very bad choice for VOIP service (which you seem to already know). Calls would have horrible quality and delays.

Our Telnor bills have been the following amounts:

Mar $680 pesos
Feb $620 pesos
Jan $700 pesos
Dec $620 pesos

This is for a telephone line, 512kb DSL, caller ID, and phone calls. The basic charge for the line, DSL and caller id is apx $550 pesos. So if your bills are much higher, you are making lots of calls to cell phones, long distance, or international calls. Many of those calls could be made with a VOIP service or possibly your Verizon cell phone.

So for a basic phone line, with internet, and VOIP ($25/month) it's about $75 USD per month not including phone calls that you would get charged for.

So I guess you could save money with cable assuming you don't need a mexican phone number for anything. So that is about $57 USD per month assuming you don't also need cable TV service to get the cable modem service. Doesn't seem worth it to save $18 per month, not have a mexican phone number (you probably use it for something), and to have a potentially lower quality of service with the cable modem.

My wife wanted to dump the Sky satellite service and get cable anyway. I don't make any calls on the Telnor line. The actual bill they were able to print out was 760 pesos which was acceptable and I paid that. That they wanted to charge me 1,500 pesos more for something in the future and wouldn't give me a bill stating the charges is what annoyed me.

And yes, I had been heavily involved in projects using VSAT terminals for rural telephony. The delay is bad, around a half second which is very annoying if you are used to the service we are. The market was very rural villages in other countries that have no service at all. The government involved has problems with laying cables. The cables are quickly stolen and sold for the value of the copper.

Said delay does not affect much in my normal internet usage. Uploads, downloads, chats, e-mail, discussion boards, et cetera, don't care much about the delay.

Had Teledesic happened the delay would have been less as I think they were to be a constellation of LEO (low earth orbit) satellites rather than geostationary. Hence a bit closer.

The sad thing is that I actually have VoIP and free calls in Mexico. The bad thing is that my gf sad she didn't know how to use the VoIP phone so I had to show her. (note phone calls from your house to a US number is DAMN expensive unless you have some type of extra service). And the problem with calling to other locations in Mexico with a free US phone is that it's expensive to the reciever to get the call. ::sigh::

I know that Mexican cell phone users pay more money to receive a call from a US phone or US cell phone since the US companies won't charge the extra fee to call MX cell phones. But are you sure that the receiver on a Mexican landline phone pays extra to receive calls from US phone numbers?? I was not aware of that.

It seems my wife signed up for the Axtel phone service along with the cable tv and cable modem. Total rent will be 986 pesos monthly. Will let you all know how it works out.
