World's top divers come to Tijuana

Usually, the only diving you’ll see in Tijuana is in the penalty box during soccer games at Estadio Caliente.

But the real thing comes to Baja California’s High Performance Sports Center today and Saturday, and we mean the real thing. What you see at the Tijuana stop of the FINA Diving World Series is essentially what you’ll see this summer at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Which is another way of saying the Chinese team is here.

China won six of the eight diving gold medals at the 2004 Olympics, and seven of eight in 2008. In the first three Diving World Series events this year – in Dubai, Beijing and Moscow – China won 22 of 24 events, and in one of those they didn’t enter anybody.

Among the expected entrants in Tijuana are He Chong and Wu Minxia, both ranked No. 1 in the world in men’s and women’s 3-meter springboard. The U.S. team includes veterans Troy Dumais, Christina Loukas and David Bouda.

The Diving World Series started in 2007 and also came to Tijuana in 2008. The Chinese were there as well, but the big story was podium finishes by Mexico’s Yahel Castillo and Paola Espinosa in individual events. Mexico carried the momentum into the Olympics a few months later, with Espinosa and partner Tatiana Ortiz taking the bronze in the 10-meter synchronized platform event – one of only three medals Mexico won in Beijing.

The High Performance Center is located behind the Tijuana airport near the Otay Mesa border crossing, and the aquatics complex rivals anything on this side of the border. Temporary seating that can accommodate 2,200 is erected above the lap pool, and four years ago it was filled for both competition days.

Preliminary rounds begin both days at 10 a.m., with the finals starting at 4 p.m. Friday’s schedule includes the men’s individual springboard and synchronized platform, and women’s individual platform and synchronized springboard. The remaining four events are Saturday.

Johnson in kayak trials

La Jolla High alum Carrie Johnson, who learned how to kayak on Mission Bay and is now based at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, tries to clinch a spot on her third Olympic team today at the U.S. flatwater kayak trials in Oklahoma City.

Johnson qualified a U.S. boat in the K-1 500 meters by winning that event at the Pan American Games in Mexico last October, but now she must qualify her actual spot in the boat. If she wins on the Oklahoma River today, she’s in. If not, the trials selection process continues to a World Cup event in Germany next month. Among her competitors today is San Diego’s Maggie Hogan.
