Tijuana to get baseball team
Pacific League OKs transfer of Guasave franchise to border

TIJUANA – There’s good news for local baseball fans.
The group that owned the Algodoneros of Guasave, in Sinaloa, had requested that the Pacific League approve the transfer of their franchise to Tijuana. On Friday, the team presidents did just that, according to the league’s website.
The president of the Algodoneros, Jaime Castro Parra, was quoted as saying that although Guasave had loyal fans, the partners no longer wanted to invest in the club. He said attendance had dropped significantly, which had resulted in economic losses.
The Pacific League plays in the fall and winter. The team is to play in Tijuana for the 2012-2013 season. The move means that Baja California will have two Pacific League teams, the Algodoneros and the Águilas de Mexicali.
Tijuana last had a professional baseball team in 2005 to 2008, when the Potros played in the city as part of the Mexican Baseball League. An ownership dispute led to the team being transferred to Reynosa, Tamaulipas at the end of the 2008 season.

TIJUANA – Never mind.
That’s what the owners of the professional baseball team in the city of Guasave are telling Tijuana fans.
Last Friday the ownership announced that they were moving the team, the Algodoneros, to Tijuana because of a lack of local revenue and dropping attendance.
Six days later, the story changed.
The team’s president, Jaime Castro Parra, held a press conference Thursday afternoon with Sinaloa Gov. Mario López Valdéz and Guasave Mayor Ramón Barajas López, along with a few hundred fans.
“I want to tell you that today we are making a commitment to keep working to maintain the Algodoneros in Guasave, and have it be forever,” the president said, according the team’s website.
For his part, the governor acknowledged that Sinaloa is “Mexico’s baseball capital,” and reiterated his commitment to work with the four teams in the state.
The announcement smacked Tijuana baseball fans hard. They had begun to savor the idea of having a team to call their own once more.
The Algodoneros are part of the Pacific League, which plays in winter. So far, league officials had not commented on Guasave’s change of heart.
