"I know Revo, but what's Zona Norte?"

Methinks you jest. But for those who really don't know, Zona Norte is one of the oldest colonias in Tijuana. The area at the north end of centro along the border just west of the river.

A small part of the Zona Norte is referred to as La Coahuila by Tijuanenses for the street name. It is the cities Zona de Tolerencia where some things that are tolerated that are not tolerated in other parts of the city. This includes the "Red Light" area of open prostitution. The entire zona de tolerencia is maybe 4 ~ 5 square blocks while the actual Zona Norte is much bigger. But the names are often interchanged by non-locals who don't make the distinction.

This area is the subject of too many discussion boards already. I think the object of this board is to show the better sides of Tijuana.

Are you saying that New York, Chicago, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid, etc. have crime?

Richinc,

Are you saying that these cities don't have crime ? I've been robbed in TJ I've been robbed in Madrid and Paris too...Every city has crime period. You might have been lucky in the other cities... Crime is a fact of life any city you go to any where in teh world there is crime it just a question of who will be their victim....Personally I would say there is more crime in Tijuana than most other cities I've been too but what I do is look around if you can't see the potential victim around you....it's you.....

Unfortunately, gated parking at apartment buildings in Tijuana is not so secure unless you have 24 hour security watching who is entering and leaving. Did you have a car alarm? My friends in Tijuana who live in gated areas with no full-time security tell me the best way to protect yourself there is with a club on the steering wheel and a good (very loud) car alarm. Nothing is 100% but it will better your odds. Many of those gated parking areas have been using the same lock for a long time and half of TJ has a key, to say nothing of any friends of your fellow residents who also will have access. Sorry that happened - I have had a couple of vehicles stolen but that was in the LA area.

Is there such a club that locks onto anything else other than the steering wheel?

Baja Gringo, one of these days we will meet and lift a bear to each other and I'll be looking forward to that day.

MAN! I hope you guys make it to Bloggers IV; I really wanna' see a bear lifted and not no Teddy Bear or cub! laugh.gif

If you read correctly, I was sarcastically making jest of BajaGringo's comments. Geez! I thought it was obvious. They were still finding bodies in Chicago and Cicero in alleys with twenty bullet holes in 'em in the late 60's when I lived there.

Remind me not to hang with you if you are always getting robbed. Once was enough for me.

Beachie; All are welcome; just show up; very casual lay back Saturday kinda' thing. Drink if you want; eat if you want.

Mikethedog; think Chiquito covered it pretty well but my barber is there... :?

A neighborhood to avoid is Colonia Laureles, the last deep valley between the hills on the way to Playas. My wife has been in a place there while I am in the US. She's getting desperate to get out. We may get a 3 (tiny) BR, 1 1/2 bath condo in the high rises across from Infonavit by the sentri lane entry. They are asking $600 a month. Easy for me when I move back in a couple months to just hop across the border. Of course when my car gets stolen it will be a little harder.

That is a bad area and I have been told that quite a few stolen cars turn up there. Hopefully the new place works out for you...

Richinc,

It's been awhile since the last time I was robbed... In fact the last robbery atempt in Tijuana was unsuccessful...I ended up beating the guy who tried to rob me....So maybe you'll want to hang around me, if just for protection laugh.gif

Chiquito:

Welcome to the hood? If I read your message right, I think you may be talking about about the white bldg south of Ley. I checked them out; would recommend checking departmentos azul across the street; rents run from $300 to $500 for 2 bedrooms and pretty spacious and airy.

Chiquito;

Each apt. has one assigned space but I know of a few others that are not used; like mine and former place, etc. Mmm, maybe I could rent it out?

There is also a security guy that patrols the lot at night under private/personal arrangement. Not sure what the price is, but know my neighbor wouldn't pay too much. Will ask if you want me to.

sdc: blue and white??? There are 2 or 3 tan bldgs. maybe, but mostly blue. I know I live here. And Quido and Vinnie are just fine for protection, not to mention the Arnellos, Ryu and the neo nazi skin-heads I seem to have befriended. Must be my charming personality! laugh.gif

There are much less expensive apartments in tj that are just as secure as the 500-750 ones that you are referring to. 500-725 is the 'gringo' price. You could rent a house with your own garage for 500! A friend rents a house for 600 that has gates all around, a garage, 4 spacious rooms, and a upstairs room.

My experience in the past month has been fun seeing the major price differences from apartment to apartment. When I first was thinking about renting an apartment, typical of most americans, I didn't want to rent something cheap because I felt it would be dirty and small etc. However, my friends that live in TJ helped me understand that the rent shouldn't exceed more than 300 dollars for an apartment. After looking around, it's true. I found some large apartments for 350 and 400, good for a family of 5. I found one in alta mira for $185! It was a small apartment but if you just want to get a small apartment for a girlfriend or your wife, that would be a nice little place to stay because the owner is always around and looking out for people in his complex.
