I agree with Scooby. Most of the authentic tamales that I have eaten have also been dry and lacking in flavor.

My vote goes to fresh masa that you buy from the tortilleria.
I suggest you try the southern style tamales ("southern" meaning Oaxacan or Acapulqueñan... I think Vera Cruz makes them as well). They wrap the tamales in banana leaves and it gives them lots of flavor and moistness... no comparison to the corn husk wrapped tamales.
