One way I break the monotony of driving and waiting at the border is to have a Spanish language CD rather than music and it helps reinforce your Spanish.  You can start with basic Spanish and progress to different levels.

Looks like we might be neighbors if everything goes well for us... Hacienda Del Mar has two near school .. Bilingual one is http://www.cri.edu.mx/ and for little ones

I am told one of is a few yards north of hacienda del Mar. The other one is lime 1.5 miles north.

We just put down a deposit in Hacienda! We thought about Brisas, since it has stronger security, but we decided that since the individual house we are renting is very secure (moreso than most of the surrounding houses), that compensated for the somewhat less secure neighborhood. We have been there twice, once in the evening, and we felt very comfortable there. Lots of families with kids.

 

I think you said that you are looking for public schools, but if you decide to look into private, I can share what I learn. We are looking for a bilingual preschool program for our son, and we have our first school visit scheduled for next week. Since we have just one child (2.5 years), private school is very affordable for us--a fraction of what we have been paying for preschool in SD.

I don't want to pry, but if you're willing, could you share with the forum your motivation for moving to Tijuana?  Myself, I plan on retiring there and thought now would be a good time to buy with the poor economy and recent fear of narco trafficker related homicides (I don't consider that much of a risk for people who aren't involved in the drug trade by the way).  I'm not actually living there yet, though I do spend one night a week, and some vacations down there working on my house.

 

I consider Tijuana similar to retiring in San Diego, but at a fraction of the costs.  So for me, it's basically a low cost retirement area ALMOST in San Diego.

Sure, I can do that. My husband and I are PhD students at UC San Diego. We are almost done, but need another year or so to finish the dissertations. The long version of the university bureaucracy part of the story would take awhile, but the short version is, we needed to find a way to support ourselves and our son, both just teaching part-time, while we write. We considered the options (moving inland, moving across the country to MD to stay in my mother-in-law's basement, or moving to TJ) and we decided that a house with a gorgeous view of the Pacific ocean sounded like the nicest--as well as the cheapest and most convenient--of our options. There are costs and hassles of moving south of the border, that is for sure, but being able to keep our part-time teaching jobs in San Diego and still meet regularly with our advisers while we finish our degrees are huge advantages. Also, cheaper preschool for our son will be a huge savings. A few of our grad student friends think we are crazy, but the majority think it's a brilliant idea. I guess in the coming year we shall see who is right . Who knows, if we really like it we might just settle down there permanently!
