by Jonny Rico
March 31 2013
SAN DIEGO, CA.- Following the 1-0 loss on Saturday night to Toluca, Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuitles are now on South American soil with their sights set on San Jose. The Xolos can seal their ticket into the knock-out stage of the Copa Libertadores with a win on Wednesday night against the Bolivian side.
It was a busy Easter Sunday for the Xoloitzcuitles filled with training and travels. The Xolos had to endure a total of two long bus rides and two different flights
Antonio 'Turco' Mohamed held a practice session on Sunday morning in the state of Mexico where they played against Toluca. Center striker Alfredo Moreno is still in doubt for Wednesday's match following an injury that saw him subbed out on Saturday against Toluca.
Following the practice the team took a bus ride to Mexico City. Once in the capital they took a flight to Panama. From Panama the Xolos jumped on another flight that took them to La Paz, Bolivia. And finally from La Paz they travel three hours by bus to Oruro.
The match is scheduled for Wednesday at 3:30 PM (PST) in the fifth match day of the Copa Libertadores. Xolos are currently in first place of group five with nine points after four games. A win in Bolivia guarantees their participation in the knock-out stage.

Now the Mexican champions will play against San Jose in Copa Libertadores
by Jonny Rico
March 31 2013
SAN DIEGO, CA.- Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuitles suffered a 1-0 defeat in Toluca in week 12 of the Liga MX. After two weeks off the Xolos returned to the site of their championship, but were unable to get a positive result.
It was a rocky start for the reigning Mexican league champions. Toluca took an early lead in the 7th minute of play after Wilson Tiago finished after a good combination play with Sinha.
Three minutes later Xolos' Fidel Martinez would see a direct red card from center referee Jorge Isaac Rojas. Martinez was dribbling the ball down the left side when Toluca's Diego Novarretti made a sliding challenge. Martinez managed to push the ball beyond the challenge, but ended up stepping on Novaretti's leg. The referee considered this an aggression and sent Martinez off in the 10th minute.
The bumps in the road would not end there for Tijuana. In the 25th minute Xolos lost their center striker Alfredo Moreno to injury and Richard Ruiz had to come in for him.
The rest of the first half became a rough midfield battle that no team was able to win. Neither goalkeeper had much to do since the ball got stuck in midfield.
For the second half Xolos came out determined to find that equalizer in spitemofmhaving one less player. Toluca on the other hand were content to draw back their players and defend the one goal lead.
The equalizer was close in the 48th minute when Joshua Abregro had a clear header all by himself. But his header went straight to the middle of the goal were the Toluca goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera was standing.
In the 55th Talavera came off his line to punch the ball after an Arce cross. The ball fell to Cristian Pellerano who tried to chip the goalkeeper, his shot ended up hitting the crossbar. Duvier Riascos was near the rebound and tried a bicycle kick but was unable to make proper contact.
In the 71st minute Fernando Arce was close to scoring directly from a corner kick, but Alfredo Talavera was aware of the danger and managed to punch to ball out.
In spite of having one less man Club Tijuana had the most chances in the second half and controlled most of the possession. Toluca just sat back and managed to hold on to the one goal lead to earn themselves their second victory at home this season.
Next up for the Xoloitzcuitles is a trip to Bolivia were on Wednesday they'll face San Jose in match day 5 of the Copa Libertadores. Xolos could seal their ticket to the next face of the Libertadores with a win over the Bolivian side.

The match will be played at 9:00 PM PST

April 2 2013
SAN DIEGO, CA.- Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuitles de Caliente have successfully requested and have been approved a schedule change for their match against Santos this coming Saturday night at the Estadio Caliente. The Tijuana side are looking to give their players the maximum amount of rest after long travels to and from Bolivia for Copa Libertadores.
It was a long way to get to Oruro, Bolivia. It took two bus rides and two different flights to get the team from Toluca where they had played last Saturday to the sight of the Copa Libertadores match.
And it will be an even longer travel home; which includes bus ride to La Paz, layover in Colombia, layover in Mexico City, and finally home.
The new schedule is set for Saturday night at 9:00 PM (Pacific Standard Time) as oppose to 5:00 PM kick off. This way the Xolos squad will have an extra four hours rest.
This will be the second time this kind of change to the schedule has been made; their week 11 game against Monterrey was also rescheduled from 5:00 PM kick off to 9:00 PM after the Xolos had traveled to Brazil to face Corinthians earlier that week.
This game against Santos will be for the 13th week of the Clausura season of the Liga MX.

Historic advance in Copa Libertadores 2013
by Jonny Rico
April 3 2013
ORURO, BOLIVIA.- Cub Tijuana traveled into the altitude of Oururo in search of a historic ticket into the final 16 of the Copa Libertadores. It was an ugly hard fought match that ended up 1-1 but the Xoloitzcuitles walk away with what they came for.
Club San Jose came into this match still with mathematical possibilities of advancing and a win would have been a great push in that direction for the Bolivians. The Oururo side came out determined for a win and looking to take advantage of their home field. It was San Jose who had the most goal scoring opportunities and forced Xolos goalkeeper Cirilo Sauced to become the star of the match.
Xolos on the other hand presented an alternative lineup. Not wanting to risk key players in the altitude knowing full well there is still one more group game at home against Millonarios. Even the players that did make the starting lineup seemed to be under the strategy of conserving energy, especially during the first half when San Jose poured on the pressure.
For the 15 minutes from minute 15 - 30 San Jose had six clear goal scoring opportunities. Cirilo Saucedo was forced to make big key saves to keep the Xolos in the game. Tijuana seemed to miss defensive midfield starter Cristian Pellerano; Fernando Arce and Leandro Agusto were not able to stop the San Jose midfielders from putting in dangerous passes to the forwards. And central defenders Javier Gandolfi and Alfredo Gonzalez-Tauilan seemed very slow in covering the Bolivian strikers.
Xolos managed to survive the first half without conceding a goal and went into half time 0-0. This fact also seemed to affect the moral of the Bolivians; having had so many goal scoring chances and not being able to put any away.
For the second half the Xolos came out more determined to do more than just survive. They had a double chance in the first two minutes of the second half. Arce was unable to push in a low cross; and the clearness fell to Richard Ruiz who took a powerful shot that bounced off a defender for a corner kick.
Still early in the second half Xolos manager Antonio Mohamed sent in the dangerous Fidel Martinez. It seemed that the game plan was to save Martinez's energy for the second half once there were some tiered defenders.
This plan seemed to be working to perfection, because in the 66th minute Martinez's speed led him to steal the ball away from the last defender, he then chipped the ball over the charging goal keeper (a move called 'sombrerito' in Spanish) and then finally just calmly pushed the ball into the net with his head.
After the goal Club Tijuana went back to defending to try and hold on to the one goal lead. But once again San Jose started creating danger going right through the Xolos defense with ease. Saucedo had several more key saves in the second half to keep San Jose off the board.
But in the 81st minute San Jose were finally able to break through the Xolos goalkeeper. Once again like so many other times in the game right through the middle; Marcelo Gomez took the ball and with a quick one-two pass was able to get behind Gandolfi and Abrego. Once in front of Cirilo, Gomez had a hard powerful shot that went into the depths of the net for the equalizer.
Tijuana realized that they couldn't spend the last 10 minutes or so on the back foot and started to get a hold of the ball a little more and even got into the box in search of the winning goal. Fidel Martinez had it in his left foot but wasted the chance. Danny Marquez had had a low shot that the goalkeeper pushed right into Martinez path, but Fidel's shot went over the cross bar.
San Jose also pressured for the winning goal but were unable to find it. With this draw the Xoloitzcuitles have reached 10 points at the top of group five, while San Jose is now in third place with five points. Corinthians is in second place with seven points and they'll face off with Millonarios tomorrow night who are at the bottom with three points.
Millonarios could reach a maximum of nine points while San Jose could reach a maximum of eight points. Which means that Tijuana with their 10 points are now guaranteed a spot in the final 16 of the tournament.

0-0 against Santos
by Jonny Rico
April 7 2013
The Xoloitzcuitles of Tijuana returned to action this Saturday night in the domestic Liga MX competition and where held to a 0-0 draw by Santos Laguna. Xolos dominated the game from start to finish, but where unable to reflect that dominance in the scoreboard.
Xolos manager Antonio 'Turco' Mohamed knew a win was a must and sent out his best starting eleven for this game; with the exception of center striker Alfredo Moreno who is still injured. In his place was the all time leading goal scorer in Xolos history Raul Enriquez.
The Tijuana players also were well aware of the importance of points and went out looking for goals right from the kick off. All of the early pressure nearly paid off in the third minute when central defender Pablo Aguilar got his head onto a Fernando Arce free kick. Santos goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez was well aware and was able to make the safe in his lower right post.
Aguilar got his head onto a Diego Olsina cross that was once again covered up by Sanchez in the seventh minute if play.
Santos could not find the way to ease the Tijuana pressure. The Santos midfielders had to drop back deep to help defend and left the forwards stranded up top. All they could manage to do was clear the ball and hope one of their forwards could chase the ball down.
In spite of all the Xoloitzcuile pressure on the Santos goal, it was the Torreon side who managed to get the ball into the back of the net. But the play was wrongfully called off for an offsides position.
The referee sent the game into half time right at the 45 minute mark with the score 0-0.
For the second half, there was an encore presentation of what the first half had brought. A Xolos team pressuring hard for a goal that could lead them to three points. And a well organized Santos team that looked to frustrate the Tijuana offense.
The most dangerous play of the game came in the 50th minute of play when Raul Enriquez took a free kick that hit the cross bar and bounced on the goal line. The entire ball did not cross the line so no goal was awarded; but in the ensuing rebounds there looked to be a hand ball committed by Santos defender Felipe Baloy. Baloy found himself on the ground with his arm stretched out and on two occasions his arm prevented the ball from advancing. Center referee decided not to call a penalty kick in favor of the Xolos.
Tijuana kept up the dominance of the game enjoying a majority of the ball possession, while Santos kept looking to just clear the danger and hope one of their speedy forwards could run down a ball a build a counter attack.
The game started to get a bit rough towards the end with Santos players committing several fouls to cut down Xolo attacks. This nearly got out of control due to the fact referee Alfredo Peńaloza did not show any yellow cards at all during the game. This of course was due to Peńaloza's disastrous performance in the Mexico Clasico last weekend when he wrongfully handed out too many cards.
With this draw Santos remains in forth place of the league now with 23 points. Xolos on the other hand improved to eighth place; the last playoff spot with 18 points. But this could all change tomorrow; a Monterrey win over Toluca would see Xolos drop back down to ninth place; outside of the playoff zone.
The Xoloitzcuitles will be back in action this next Wednesday night April 10 when they host Colombian side Millonarios in the last group game of the Copa Libertadores. Xolos have already sealed their ticket to the next round of that competition, and there is the possibility of an alternative squad for that game.
The next Liga MX game for the Mohamed boys will be next Saturday when they travel to Mexico City to face Cruz Azul. Cruz Azul currently has 17 points; one less than Xolos. This game will be of great importance in the playoff race for both teams.

The team will play with another lineup to
by Jonny Rico
April 9 2013
SAN DIEGO, CA.- Xolos manager Antonio Mohamed confirmed in post game interview on Saturday night that he will be using an alternative squad to face Millonarios on Wednesday night in the final group game of the Copa Libertadores. Mohamed mentioned that he now wants to focus on the domestic league and qualify the team to the Liga MX playoffs.
This now opens up the possibility for those reserve players that don't get that much playing time and some of the youth squad players who have been pushing for an opportunity. In today's practice scrimmage game this is the squad that took on the Under 20 team.
In goal veteran goalkeeper Adrian Zermeńo. Zermeńo would be living his first experience in the Copa Libertadores.
In the back line there could be some surprises like Noe Maya playing right back. While this is not his strongest position, it is not a position he is not familiar with; he played there while in San Luis. The central defense would be Alfredo Gonzalez-Tahuilan and Joshua Abrego. And finally at left back it would be US International Greg Garza.
Leandro Agusto and Jorge Hernandez would be set to take the defensive midfielder positions. Hernandez has been used as a right back in his last few appearances but is capable of playing in the middle.
Jose Madueńa on the right, Bruno Piceno in the center, and Fidel Martinez on the left will make up a line of three creative midfielders in front of Agusto and Hernandez.
And finally up in front Raul Nava will be the lone striker playing right in front of Piceno, while Madueńa and Martinez offer support from the wide positions.
This is the squad that manager Antonio Mohamed worked with in today's practice at the Estadio Caliente.

ESPN and Univision Deportes have shown Tijuana's games in English
by Jonny Rico
April 17 2013
SAN DIEGO, CA.- With each passing game in the Liga MX and Copa Libertadores, the Xoloitzcuitles of Tijuana keep on breaking through borders. Last Saturday nights game against Cruz Azul was shown on ESPN 2 in the United States, broadcasted completely in English.
This marks the second time in which a Club Tijuana game is broadcasted in English; the first one being last seasons second leg final in the Apertura 2012 season of the Liga MX. The game that saw the Xolos crowned champions for the very first time when they defeated Toluca.
The Xoloitxcuitles have a unique reality by living on the border. They live in two countries and two different cultures; something no other Liga MX can claim.
The Xolos already have plenty of English language coverage, starting with this very section Xolo Pass from SanDiegoRed.com. As well as various other blogs, Facebook pages, and Twitter accounts that inform on the happenings of the club in English.
The need of multiple language coverage for the Club Tijuana team comes from the fact that some of their fans in southern California and other places in the U.S. dont all speak Spanish. And they too require knowing what goes on with their favorite team in their own language.
Only the future will tell if there will be more Xolo games on TV in English. Mean while stay tune to SanDiegoRed who will continue to have the most complete coverage of the Aztec Dogs in English.

The team will not get new players for the South American competition
by Jonny Rico
April 22 2013
SAN DIEGO, CA.- The Round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores is just around the corner for the Xoloitzcuitles. With the local Liga MX playoffs slipping away game by game, the Xolos will focus on the season's main objective; Copa Libertadores.
With the group play now complete in the Copa Libertadores the South American Soccer Federation (CONMEBOL) allows clubs to bolster their squads with new players. Club Tijuana has opted to not take advantage of this and continue on with it's current squad.
Antonio Mohamed coach of the Xoloitzcuitles explained that the Xolos will not add anymore players to their squad in the post game press conference following the 2-1 loss to Morelia in the Liga MX.
Mexican clubs have previously taken advantage of this rule. Most famously Cruz Azul in their run to the final in 2001. With Toluca no longer competing in the Mexican league playoffs, Cruz Azul arrange the loan of the Toluca superstar striker Jose Saturnino Cardozo. Cardozo helped the Mexico City team reach the final which they would eventually lose in a penalty shoot-out with Argentine Boca Jrs after drawing 1-1 over the two game series. Cardozo then returned to his club Toluca following the Copa Libertadores participation.

Monarcas closer to the next round
by Said Rodríguez
April 20 2013
Club Tijuana basically says goodbye to the playoffs with tonight's 2-1 loss to Monarcas Morelia at home. Danny Marquez found the back of the net for Xolos in the first half, but Hector Mancilla turned it all around for Morelia in a matter of minutes.
Both Xolos and Morelia came into the game with positive intentions looking for each other's goals. And it was Morelia who had the first chance of the game in the third minute. Hector Mancialla laid off a cross with his chest to the oncoming Joao Rojas, Rojas was unable to make good contact with the ball and his off balance shot sales over the cross bar.
The Xoloitzcuitles slowly took control of the game with Fernando Arce commanding the midfield. Duvier Riascos and Fidel Martinez looked to explode their talents from the wide positions while Danny Marquez always stood tall in the box looking for a chance to put away.
In the 34th minute Fernando Arce noticed Fidel Martinez across the field and sent in a pin point cross to Martinez who laid the ball off with his left foot for Danny Marquez to push into an empty net. This was Marquez's first ever goal with Club Tijuana.
The Xolos took the one goal lead into the break.
For the second half Morelia even out the control of the game and started to pressure for an equalizer.
Hector Mancilla single handily turned the game around for Morelia. Starting in the 74th minute Mancilla took a wild powerful shot that found the top corner of the goal. Nothing Cirilo Saucedo could do but dive and make the goal that much prettier.
One minute later Mancilla was in the middle of the box ready to ponce on a defensive collapse by the Xolos. A cross came into the box that Joshua Abrego missed judged and could not header away, Edgar Castillo could not react fast enough to the Abrego miss and let the ball bounce off his leg. Mancilla ponced on that bounce and buried the ball into the net for his second goal and the Monarca's lead.
Late in the game Xolos players once again lost their cool. Last week it was Cristian Pellerano for which he was unavailable today. Tonight it was Joe Corona who saw a direct red card after a hard foul. In stoppage time Edgar Castillo was shown a yellow card for arguing with the assistant referee, he then argued that yellow card for which he received his second card in a matter of seconds. Castillo then preceded to insult both the referee and assistant something that might cause him more games in suspension.
Tijuana are now left with two games to play and they must win them both, plus they must hope other results around the league end up in their favor in both the final two weeks of the season. But as always, it is the Copa Libertadores that will take priority over any Liga MX circumstance.

Xolos 0-0 Palmeiras: Tijuana gets nothing at home The team will now travel to Brazil to get a chance to qualify to Quarter Finals
by Jonny Rico April 30 2013
TIJUANA, BC.- Club Tijuana was unable to make their home field advantage count as they draw 0-0 against Brazilian side Palmeiras in the opening leg of the round of 16 in the Copa Libertadores. The only positive from this first leg was that Xolos did not concede any away goals to Palmeiras. The Xolos seemed a little nervous at kick off time, because during the opening minutes it was the Brazilians who controlled the ball. They took shots that Saucedo easily controlled, looked for crosses that either Saucedo or the defenders were able to cut down, and they even had a legitimate penalty claim in the eighth minute when Wesley was stepped on by Javier Gandolfi inside the box. But the Brazilian exaggerated the fall and was told to play on by the center referee.
The Xoloitzcuitles were able to shake off the initial pressure around the 15th minute. In the 17th minute Alfredo Moreno nearly put in Duvier Riascos with a through ball that was just cut down by the Palmeiras defense. In the 25th minute Fidel Martinez found a bouncing ball just outside the box, but his shot ended up going wide. It was at this time that the home side started to dominate the game. One minute later in the 25th Duvier Riascos sent in a long cross that the goalkeeper Bruno did not come out to cut down. Martinez was there to push in the ball, but Ayrton was there half a second before Martinez to clear the ball. Fernando Arce was close to scoring in the 35th minute when he took a direct shot from a free kick. Bruno made a huge save and sent the ball to a corner kick. Before half time Xolos had two more goal scoring opportunities; in the 43rd minute Alfredo Moreno was one on one against the goalkeeper following a Joe Corona through ball pass.
Moreno sent his shot way to high and the opportunity was gone. In the final play of the half Riascos got his head on a Fernando Arce free kick. He had his back to the goal but manage to turn his head and send the ball towards the goal, but it ended up hitting the post. Both teams went to the break scoreless. For the second half the Xoloitzcuitles once again took a few minutes to establish their dominance. The first few minutes even and very hard fought. In the 49th minute Kleber had an open shot from the right side of the box, but the ball went well wide. And in the 53rd minute Javier Gandolfi was obligated to commit a harsh foul to cut down a Palmeiras attack. Xolos once again shock off the initial Brazilian pressure and began to dominate the game. In 62nd minute second half substitute Richard Ruiz had a curling shot that was heading to the back of the net, but once again Bruno got his hands on it to push it out.
Once again the Palmerias keeper took the spotlight in the 68th minute when he made a huge diving safe off of a Riascos shot. The Xoloitzcuitles kept dominating possession, but there wasnt anymore real clear goal scoring opportunities. Tijuana fail to take advantage of home field advantage and now must look for a win in Sao Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Xolos vs Chivas: The champion says goodbye to Liga MX
The game will be played on Friday at 7:30PM
SAN DIEGO, CA.- A season that started out with a lot of hope and happiness now is ruled by uncertainty. Club Tijuana will take on Chivas of Guadalajara in the final game of the Clausura 2013 tournament of the Liga MX. Both teams playing for pure pride as both their hopes of reaching the playoffs have disappeared. The game is scheduled for Friday May 3 at 7:30PM local time at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana. It will be part of week 17 of the Clausura 2013 season of Liga MX.
Club directors and manager Antonio Mohamed all warned that the Copa Libertadores would be the number one priority; but Tijuana Xolos have completely disregarded the local Liga MX were they are still the reigning champions for one more game. Xolos are winless in their last eight games in Liga MX and only have one win in their last 12 matches played league play. Chivas comes in on a similar boat. Winless in their last six games with five consecutive losses to rivals America, Jaguares, Atlante, Atlas, and Queretaro. Chivas keep paying the prize season after season for their directors bad planning. Current manager Benjamin Galindo had one day to prepare before the start of the Liga MX season. Once again Chivas will be playing for pride with no hopes at a championship.
For Fridays game it is expected that Xolos will once again play with an alternate lineup giving key players rest thinking of the crucial Copa Libertadores return leg in Sao Paolo. The probable starting eleven would be: Cirilo Saucedo, Juan Carlos Nuñez, Joshua Abrego, Jose Gonzalez-Tahuilan, Greg Garza, Richard Ruiz, Bruno Piceno, Fernando Arce, Fidel Martinez, Raul Enriquez, and Danny Marquez. The game will be shown live on TV Azteca in Mexico (except Tijuana, were it will be Pay-Per-View) and on Univision Deportes Network in the United States.

From Tijuana to Brazil
Club Tijuana will have eight days to prepare one of the biggest games in the short club history. The return leg of the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores against Palmeiras; which is currently 0-0 after he first 90 minutes of play in Tijuana.
All first leg games are now complete in the round of 16. The visiting teams that took wins home were Atletico Mineiro and Velez Sarsfield. They pulled off wins while visiting São Paulo and Newlls Oldboys respectfully.
Boca Jrs and Gremio both got 1-0 wins over Corinthians and Santa Fe respectfully. And Real Garcilaso, Tigre, and Emelec all got wins by one goal difference as well. The only draw this round came in the Xolos - Palmeiras match.
The second leg match ups will commence this week where Atletico Mineiro will look to seal their place in the quarterfinals when they play São Paulo. And also on that day Fluminense will look to over come a one goal deficit against Emelec. One day later Nacional will do the same; try and over come a one goal deficit when the face Real Garcilaso.
If Xolos are able to get through Palmeiras, the quarterfinals would be a difficult task; they would face the winners of the Atletico Mineiro - São Paulo matchup. If somehow the Xoloitzcuitles pulls out the upset in quarterfinals, the semifinals round would be a bit easier; they would either face Real Gacilazo, Nacional, Gremio, or Santa Fe.
Xolos will play their second leg against Palmeiras on May 14 in search of the pass to quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores.
Can you imagine Ronaldinho and Atletico Mineiro here in Tijuana?
