I know they say that it takes 3 to 4 days for your activation to start with DSL but can people who already have it confirm how long it REALLY took to get connected after you activated. I heard from AXEL I think that once you got the modem, connection was instanteous, well almost. The three to four day thing I'm hoping is just extra time they say so customers don't bother them right away. I ask because I need my internet ASAP for my business. Please people, tell me it only took a few hours or a day from when you ordered to when you were able to connect.

JD, I had to get the landline to get DSL, I wasn't interested in Cable from everything I've read here and other places. It cost more but I think service might be better.

SDC, wait until I blow you away with my 51.2 kbs laugh.gif

Silly silly RYU. you are doing homework in the wrong classrooms. You do understand that I work from home every friday where I participate in teleconference calls for hours, as well as do video and application conferencing (Webex where you can share an application and the file youa re looking at with people over the Web), and I do all of this from my apartment using my CABLE internet and my VOIP telephone. but..if you insist.

Hey Rich, sorry about the slow response to your question, both JD and I use Lingo for our VoIP, as of now, I'm not so sure about my VoIP as there seems to be a bit of static when I call but I'm also using a wireless phone near a wireless modem, which I didn't ask for. Lingo Mexican plan is about 30 and will allow you to call anywhere in Mexico for free.

My internet is through cablemas. 25 bux a month for 192...no contract, no fee for the equipment..free install.

my VOIP is through lingo and www.lingo.com.

it is not perfect. Calls do drop every now and again or there is a pause in receiving a packet. but, not too much that it pisses me off. for the price, teh service and quality are well worth it.

lingo covers all of u.s., mexico, and western europe. includes home phone or cell phone dialing. unlimited for 30 or 35 a month.

Been checking out Lingo/ Primus in McLean, Va
Here is a partial BBB.org report:

"Customer Experience
Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau due to unanswered complaint(s).

Customer Complaint Data
Number of complaints processed by the BBB over the last 36 months: 363
Number of complaints processed by the BBB in the last 12 months: 247 "

Doesn't make me real comfortable..........have you had any problems?

And do you know if you can hook up just one computer on a wireless network?Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes just want their Lingo hardware/software connected to my computer after the Telnor modem and the wireless Linksys router. Is this possible?
Their diagrams showed their hardware hooked in before the modem.

I have not personally had any problems. However, I have only called them once. In that instance, they answered quickly and solved my problem. Other than an occasional dropped or poor quality call, lingo works great. especially for 35 a month.

I got a flyer from Cablemas yesterday. They are offering an internet and telephone connection over cable now.

Do you recall what sort of package deal it is as regards cost? I am supposing that the quality of service should be fairly decent considering the large presence and marketshare of Cablemas.

Chiquito?

Thanks and regards,

Alicia

JD--

You already answered a huge portion of my question. Thanks.

Just curious about the flyer and what it says.

Thanks for the reply. I'll hound Cablemas about it and see what they have to offer. We're setting up service in the next seven days, or will attempt to at least.

Did you have to buy the modem?
I had to pay like an extra $50 for the first two months for the modem and then it;s like $37 a month.
Got news for you tho; 512 sounds good but 110 is more like it; not that much better than I was getting out of Ricochet in San Diego

Will post more here as I check it out and learn more.

I know there out there for about $100 USD and will "load balance" between 2 I net connections... so if one is down, bummer. Both up? use both "engines".

Any thoughts out there??

We got Cablemas for our cable internet service, and so far no problems. Speed is perfectly adequate -- never slow for us, at least. Liked the free install and no contract and $35/mo USD.

no contract sounds great! I see basic cable for tv is not too bad pricing....

Without getting technical, could you please click on My Network Places and tell me if you see strange names you never heard of in there...

If CableMas does not support DOCSIS, you will see computers in you area that do not belong to you if other people have cable....
It is just a little security question so I know what I need to bring to setup shop.

It is a tech thing. The folks who make the "cable modem" can be DOCSIS member or not. No law about it in any way.

If the modem is not DOCSIS ready then I was going to grab a very old laptop from a surplus store, rip out the hard drive, put in two old laptop Network Interface Cards and boot from floppy. That floppy would filter the in and out of data between me and the rest of the world going between the two Network cards. It is technically called a Multi Homed firewall.

Sounds fancy but really easy to do. Get a really old laptop and download a Linux Firewall assembled on something like Damn Small Linux. Follow the instructions. but it does mean finding an old laptop that still sorta works and doing surgury removing parts so it doesn't get hot.
