Tijuana’s team will be without key players
Por: Alexandra Mendoza 16 Marzo 2012 @ 7:11 am
TIJUANA— The Xolos will have a dramatically different strategy in Saturday’s road match-up against Tigres.
First, forward José Sand and midfielder Egidio Arévalo have to serve a one-game suspension after they were ejected last week during the game against América.
Additionally, Mexican-American players Joe Corona and Greg Garza have joined the U.S. U-23 team, which is preparing for the Olympic qualifying tournament next week in Nashville.
In the mid-field, Leandro Augusto and Richard Ruiz are not back from injuries.
So Xolos coach Antonio Mohamed will have to call on other players to challenge one of Mexico’s toughest teams, Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, the reigning champion.
Noé Maya could play instead of Arévalo, while forward Raúl Enríquez may the ideal substitute for Sand in tandem with Duvier Riascos. Leandro Fernández, who scored two goals against Chivas USA in the recent friendly match in San Diego, could see some playing time, as well as Bruno Piceno.
The Tigres, led by Ricardo “Tuca” Ferreti, are sitting in fourth place in the general standings, with five wins, four ties and just one loss.
The Xoloitzcuintles also are doing well.
They arrive in Monterrey after an extraordinary performance last Friday that saw them tie powerhouse América with only nine men on the field at Caliente Stadium. Tijuana’s team is in sixth place, with four wins, five ties and one loss.
During training sessions this week in Tijuana, the players talked about the challenge that awaits them Saturday.
“We have to go in with the mentality of the winning team we have been,” said forward Riascos. “Our team has responded well and that’s why we have had good results regardless of what team we face.”

Tijuana drops to eighth place in standings
Por: SanDiegoRed.com 17 Marzo 2012 @ 9:00 pm
TIJUANA – The Xolos suffered their first loss in six games Saturday night in Monterrey, as Tigres scratched out a win 1-0.
Tigres went ahead at minute 9 after a controversial call by referee Roberto García. He ruled that Xolos defender Javier Gandolfi’s hand had illegally blocked a shot although it looked like the hand had just moved naturally.
Tigres team captain Lucas Lobos scored on the penalty kick, which Xolos goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo nearly stopped.
From then on Tigres focused on defense. A few minutes after the goal was scored, Xolos midfielder Édgar Castillo nearly responded with a goal of his own with a shot that hit the left goal post.
In the second half, Xolos coach Antonio Mohamed sent in players such as Leandro Fernández, Mauro Gerk and Armando Pulido to put more pressure up front.
It almost worked.
The Xolos nearly tied in the last minute of the match with a center shot by Fernández that Tigres goalkeeper Enrique Palos managed to bat away.
With the loss the Xolos dropped to eighth place in the general standings, with 17 points (four wins, five ties and two losses).
Tigres, of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, stretched their winning streak to eight in this tournament, solidifying their chances to repeat as champions.
Tijuana played the match without key players, whose absence was evident in the field. Egidio Arévalo and Jorge Sand served a one-game suspension and Joe Corona and Greg Garza are playing with the U.S. U-23 team.
The match marked the debut of Xolos minor leaguer Bruno Piceno, who was not able to do much to help his team.
The Xolos play at home next Saturday against Atlas de Guadalajara, a team also battling to stay in the First Division.

Tijuana club is fighting to advance to playoffs
Por: SanDiegoRed.com 30 Marzo 2012 @ 9:56 pm
The Tijuana Xolos could not keep up the momentum of the last few weeks and fell Friday night 1-0 to Pachuca in a road game.
The Xolos, which avoided relegation last week, arrived to the match looking to rack up points to help them reach the playoffs. Despite the loss, the team still has a chance to reach the post season.
The Tuzos scored the night’s only goal at minute 62, when the Xolos goalkeeper, Cirilo Saucedo, dropped a ball he stopped, giving Javier Muñoz Mustafá the perfect opportunity to push it into the net.
Tijuana drops to seventh position in the general standings, with 20 points, while Pachuca climbed a rung, to the sixth spot, with 21 points.
The Xolos return next week to Caliente Stadium, where they will host Potros de Hierro del Atlante, a game Tijuana needs to win to keep its playoffs hopes alive.

Club Tijuana is close to the playoffs of the mexican soccer league
Por: SanDiegoRed.com 17 Abril 2012 @ 3:03 pm
TIJUANA.- With two matches to go, Xoloitzcuintles depends on itself to classify to the playoffs of the Mexican Soccer League.
With six victories, six ties and three defeats, the red and black team owns the sixth position on the standings. The team requires four more points of the six possible ones to grab the golden ticket.
Next week, Tijuana will face San Luis and will close the regular calendar on April 29 with the visit of UNAM’s Pumas at the Caliente Stadium. According to the previous work of both teams on the field, the games should be easy but Xolos shouldn’t take them for granted.
If the team loses or ties on the next games, their spot in the playoffs of the Clausura 2012 will depend on what Cruz Azul, Pachuca and Jaguares do since any of them could get more points or win thanks to the goals that they have made during the tournament.
The highest place Xolos could get is the fourth position which could get them the possibility to close at least one game of the playoffs in their house but for that to happen, they need to keep more points than Pachuca, Rayados of Monterrey and América.
Tijuana could make history in the next couple of weeks if they classify for the first time to the playoffs since this is their first year in the league.
Forward José Sand, who has made most of the goals in the team, (seven during this tournament) talked to the press at the end of Monday’s training about the expectation of getting in the playoffs.
“Being in the playoffs should be the best thing for a new team, a team with a little bit of history that only has been around for a year in this league, a dream made true” mentioned Sand. “Once on the playoffs, anything could happen in soccer”, he added.
The first stop will be next Saturday in San Luis, where Xoloitzcuintles will face a rival that has been eliminated of the tournament.
Alfredo González Tahuilán talked about the commitment of facing the Gladiators on their home.
“It’s going to be complicated, they're going to try to end with a good performance in the tournament”, mentioned the soccer player who once was a player in the other team. “We want to win over there, work on the game and know that if we win we are in”.
The Tijuana team will continue with their trainings on the next days to prepare for their next match.

Xolos defeated San Luis 1-0
Por: SanDiegoRed.com 22 Abril 2012 @ 8:30 am
Xoloitzcuintles is practically in the playoffs of the mexican soccer league after defeating San Luis 1-0 on the game of last Saturday at the field of the Alfonso Lastras Stadium.
Tijuana awaits for the results on the games of this weekend. If Pachuca and Jaguares lose, the red and black team will be officially in the “Big Party” in only their first year at the highest circuit of mexican soccer.
The game started very slowly with small attacks from both teams.
Xolos were the first ones to get close to the goal and in the 25 minute, the midfield player Egidio Arévalo took a bounce in the area that the goalkepper César Lozano turned aside.
The team directed by Antonio Mohamed kept the ball most of the time with a rival that didn’t showed much in the field.
On the second half of the game, Xoloitzcuintles improved their defense and it looked as if they were searching for a tie because their director “El Turco” sent men to the field as Alfredo González Tahuilán when the score was in zeros.
It was on the 74 minute when the Tijuana team took the victory thanks to a special play of their offensive couple.
José Sand gave a pass to Duvier Riascos who sent the ball to the upper angle in Lozano’s area.
With the end of this match, Tijuana stands in the sixth position of the tournament, a place as result of seven victories, six ties and three defeats. Also,Tijuana has become the best defense since they only have 10 goals from their rivals on 16 dates.
Xolos will close the regular calendar of this tournament next week at their home in the Caliente Stadium when they receive UNAM’s Pumas.
In the case of Pachuca or Jaguares winning this date, Tijuana only will need a tie next weekend to stay in the playoffs.

Tijuana is one step away from being in the playoffs.
Por: Alexandra Mendoza 23 Abril 2012 @ 12:25 pm
With the results of last weekend in the latest soccer tournament, Tijuana may or may not be in the playoffs.
The team will arrive to the last date of the tournament on the sixth position with 27 points, followed by Pachuca with 25 points and Cruz Azul and Jaguares tied in the eighth position with 24 points.
Unlike their rivals, Xolos depend on themselves to classify and will have the advantage of playing the last date at their home, Caliente Stadium.
The red and black team will welcome UNAM’s Pumas Sunday at noon and by that time they will know the results of the games of Pachuca and Jaguares. The only remaining game will be the classic between Cruz Azul and America.
With a tie or a victory Xolos are in the playoffs without mattering what the other teams do. If they lose, they should hope that Jaguares, Cruz Azul and Pachuca don’t win either because the spot in the playoffs will be defined by the goals each team made during the tournament.
The team directed by Antonio Mohamed could climb until the fifth position and depending on the other scores; Tijuana could face Morelia, Tigres, Santos or America. For that to happen, Xolos need that Monterrey gets defeated by Atlante.
On any of those scenarios, Xolos would begin the playoff series in home and define as visitors a pass to the semifinals.
Xoloitzcuintles are the team with the biggest chances of classifying to the playoffs even if the fans have to wait a week to know if their team will earn their first time in playoffs since becoming part of the main soccer league in Mexico.

Playing at noon at the Caliente Stadium is not good for the Xolos
Por: SanDiegoRed.com 25 Abril 2012 @ 4:15 pm
TIJUANA.- Next Sunday, Xoloitzcuintles will try to earn their pass to the playoffs of the mexican soccer league when they welcome UNAM’s Pumas at noon in the Caliente Stadium.
Tijuana will be back at the timing that was their usual spot but hasn’t been good for results, at least in this league.
Under the sun of noon, Xolos haven’t been able to win on their stadium and since getting into the highest league; they have been defeated twice, and gained five ties.
On this tournament, Tijuana has had two encounters at this time of day, one with Santos with a final score of 3-1 in the fourth date and a tie when they faced Cruz Azul on the sixth date.
Even with that in mind, the players are calmed, that’s what they showed at the practice of last Tuesday at the Centro de Iniciación Xoloiztcuintle CIX (their school of soccer).
Joe Corona , the red and black mid fielder mentioned that for now, making a good game on the match with Pumas was the first thing on his mind because even if the other team couldn’t get into the payoffs anymore, they were going to try to win.
The National City resident doesn’t know what’s wrong with the hour, “The heat, the field, the physical challenge could be involved but I have faith in my teammates, we are going to win this Sunday, we have good rhythm, we want to leave everything on the field”.
Also, the defense Joshua Ábrego considers the team has to take the advantage on being home.
“We are doing our biggest effort, it’s going to be sunny, the heat will be for both sides, but we are used to it, I hope we can get advantage” he added.
Along with Atlas, Xolos have the best defense of the tournament and they only allowed 10 goals on 16 dates, something that makes Ábrego happy even do he thinks is part of the team’s work.
On the positive side, by the day and time of the game, Xolos will know the scores od Jaguares and
Pachuca, the teams that could steal the last spot on the payoffs.
Depending on what those other two teams do, Xoloitzcuintles could be in the playoffs before the game, if that’s not the case, they just need a tie to classify.
This morning, the club’s directors announced on their official twitter account an open practice on Friday for every person that has a seasonal pass, the Xolopass.
It will begin at four in the afternoon and they expect a good response from the fans of both sides of the border. Since the beginning of this tournament, 90% of the available seats were bought with the Xolopass.
Tijuana stands on the sixth position of the tournament with seven victories, six ties and three defeats with a total of 27 points.

The black and red team walks into "Liguilla" for the first time
Por: Alexandra Mendoza 29 Abril 2012 @ 5:25 pm
At the beginning of the tournament, they just wanted to stay in the league and now, Tijuana celebrates a spot in the playoffs for the first time.
With an intense closure, this Sunday, Xoloitzcuintles got the golden ticket to the playoffs of the tournament “Clausura 2012” when they tied 1-1 with UNAM’s Pumas on a game that took place in the field of the Caliente Stadium.
Duvier Riascos was who made the goal that put them in the big party of mexican soccer and woke up the souls of over 16,000 xolofans with joy.
The victories of Jaguares and Pachuca on Saturday put a lot of pressure on the Tijuana team, they were forced to tie or win the match to not depend on the results of the game between America and Cruz Azul.
Tijuana knew how to balance the game always looking to score and also defending their place.
The first call of danger was from the visitors who during minute seven they mist a goal. Javier Cortés sent a center to the area and Carlos Orrantía couldn’t place the ball properly for the good luck of the Xolos.
Tijuana responded and during minute 32, Duvier Riascos was close to the goal but he also mist the shot.
At the end of the first half of the game, Pumas put Xolos in danger again in the hands of a shot made by Martín Bravo but the ball hit the goalpost.
For the second half of the game, the director Antonio Mohamed looked for the goal of calm and exchanged Greg Garza for Richard Ruiz at the field.
The locals showed more and during minute 58, beer flew on the tribune.
Colombian Duvier Riascos took a pass made by Egidio Arévalo and made the big shot.
It appeared as Xolos was going to win but on the 90-minute, Pumas tied the game. One of their players was going alone versus Cirilo Saucedo and that was the cause of a foul made by Joshua Ábrego, it coasted him the expulsion of the game.
Javier Cortés made a free kick and made the goal of Pumas followed by the surprise of the spectators.
The last minutes were hard for the fans but when the referee blew his whistle, it was official, Xoloitzcuintles were in the playoffs (known as “liguilla”) for the first time in their short history in Mexican premiere league.
With this score, Tijuana stands on the seventh place with 28 points, result of seven victories, seven ties and three defeats.
Xolos will face Monterrey on the quarterfinals.
At the end of the match between Pumas and Xolos, it was announced that the sell of the tickets for the next math part of the playoffs will begin this Monday at the Caliente Stadium at 11am only for those who have the Xolopass.

Chances are slim for Tijuana to advance after a 2-1 loss at home
Por: Ivan Orozco 3 Mayo 2012 @ 12:06 am
TIJUANA -The red and black waving flags were the same Wednesday night. The chants coming from the stands in the usual sold out Estadio Caliente were familiar.
But the team wearing the red home jerseys was not the same.
Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles gave up goals in each half after being the dominant squad for most of the first half in a 2-1 loss to Rayados de Monterrey in the first Mexican Primera Divison playoff match in the city's history.
Jesus Zavala (31st minute) and Angel Reyna (50th) scored for Monterrey in the first game of a home-and-home quarterfinals series.
The second leg of the series is Saturday in Monterrey. The Xolos will need to score two goals and keep the Rayados from scoring to advance to the semifinals. Monterrey, the back-to-back defending CONCACAF Champions League champs, would still advance if there is a tie in the aggregate score.
Monterrey, who has juggled traveling and playing in two tournaments, has the tie breaker after finishing second in the regular season standings.
“It was a disputed match that opened up with time,” said Monterrey coach Victor Manuel Vucetich. “We gave them a lot of chances and we could have been better at times. I'm satisfied with the result but there are many things we still need to tighten up.”
It was believed the Xolos could take advantage of a Rayados team that was coming off a long CONCACAF schedule.
“We're not tired," Vucetich said. "I don't see it that way. We could have scored four or five goals. Our team kept coming. We just couldn't score more.”
The Xolos gave its fans some hope with a goal late in the match. Substitute Raul Enríquez scored in the 88th minute with a left-footed shot that beat Rayados goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco that keeps Tijuana clinging on to life in its first postseason series.
“It gave us a bit of life,” said Xolos coach Antonio Mohamed. “We have to go and play for the series. It can be difficult but we still have some life.”
Extending the postseason run could be a daunting task against a Monterrey team that has been almost perfect at home with a 7-0-2 record and has not been shutout in 20 games.
Monterrey showed composure and endured a flurry of Xolos shots in the first half.
Tijuana's Joe Corona, Duvier Riascos and Egidio Arevalo all had scoring chances early in the match. Monterrey even helped the Xolos when a Fernando Arce's free kick in the 14th minute deflected off a Rayados defender and hit the right post.
Even defender Richard Ruiz, who was sent off in the 75th minute after a second yellow card, took a shot from about 30 yards out in the 43rd minute but couldn't find the net.
Monterrey had taken a 1-0 lead by then after Zavala's goal via a header off a Cesar Delgado corner kick. Zavala's shot beat Saucedo to a wide open left post. Saucedo dove after the ball but was late. The play brought back painful memories from the Xolos of the previous tournament under fired coach Joaquin del Olmo.
Tijuana often was the dominant team with several scoring chances wasted while giving up soft goals. That was when the Xolos was trying to prove it belonged in the Mexican Primera Division and the playoffs were a distant goal. That was before Mohammed took over nine games into the Apertura tournament last summer.
The Xolos did not have the league's defense back then. It was not the defense that gave up only 11 goals in 17 games as it did this tournament.
On Wednesday, Tijuana was just another team that avoided relegation losing to one of Mexico's top teams in recent history. The team that sparked life to a city with hopes of extending an unprecedented run into the post season.
And Tijuana can, in part, thank Reyna.
He gave Monterrey a 2-0 lead five minutes into the second half. He volleyed a shot over Xolos defenders and over the extended arms of Xolos goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo into the left wall of the net.
Humberto Suazo fed a pass to a wide open Reyna near the top of the half circle. Reyna didn't waste any time and buried his shot.
The play silenced the crowd who watched the Xolos desperately try to score a consolation goal and close the gap in the aggregate score.
The crowd came back to life after Ruiz' goal but it was not enough. They tossed cups with whatever was left of their beer into the night sky, thankful that its team did not lose 5-0.
At least that's what it could have been had Saucedo not slapped away a handful of Monterrey shots late in the match.
Mohamed hopes to have most starters for the next match. He was forced to play Noe Maya as a defending midfielder and Miguel Almazan inside of the backline after starter Joshua Abrego served a a red card suspension against Monterrey. Ruiz will also miss Saturday's game for his red card Wednesday.
“I plan to come out with the same plan and similar lineup,” Mohamed said about the second leg. “We were the better team on the field only that the scoreboard didn't say so.”

The Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles are out of the Mexican soccer playoffs.
They did not, however, go quietly.
The Xolos tied 2-2 at Monterrey on Saturday night, not enough to overcome Wednesday’s 2-1 loss at home in their two-leg Primera Division quarterfinal series. But they made the Rayados work for it, made them sweat it out, in a wild game that featured one fewer red cards than goals.
The Xolos led 1-0 and had a man advantage (following a red card on Monterrey’s Angel Reyna) late in the first half, and a 2-1 lead inside 30 minutes to go after Egidio Arevalo’s penalty kick gave him his second goal of the night.
Each time, Monterrey responded. Carlos Delgado scored on the stroke of halftime, and another Argentine, Jose Maria Basanta, leveled it at 2-2 just three minutes after Arevalo had given Tijuana hope. What did in the Xolos were second-half red cards to Miguel Almazan and Armando Pulido, both for the same thing: two-footed, cleats-up tackles.
That left Tijuana playing nine vs. 10 for the game’s final 16 minutes, which meant a two-man backline and goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo making audacious dribbling runs to the center circle.
Second-seeded Monterrey advances to the semifinals along with Club America, which eliminated Pachuca on a 3-2 aggregate. The two other semifinalists will be determined today, with top-seeded Santos Laguna and Tigres taking leads into their second legs.
For the Xolos, the 2012 Apertura season begins in July. Their next scheduled game is a June 30 exhibition at Qualcomm Stadium against Club America.

Xolos release Apertura schedule: It's not easy
Written by
Mark Zeigler
8:38 p.m., June 4, 2012
The Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles unveiled their schedule for the 2012 Apertura season of Mexico’s Primera Division, and if there’s a message buried between the dates and times and opponents it is this: Win early.
The 17-game schedule opens July 20 at Estadio Caliente against Puebla, then at Leon, then home against UNAM Pumas. Puebla and Pumas failed to make the recent Clausura playoffs; Leon is newly promoted from the second division.
But then things turn tough. The Xolos must play away to both Clausura finalists, Santos Laguna and Monterrey, as well as both of Mexico’s richest clubs, Mexico’s City’s Club America and Chivas of Guadalajara. In fact, of the four semifinalists from the Clausura season, the Xolos must play all of them on the road.
The good news is that the schedule flips for the 2013 Clausura, with all those tough road games at home.
Another interesting twist: Seven of the eight league games are on Friday nights, either at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. Most Xolos games last season were on the weekend.
The Xolos, fresh off a seventh-place finish and the first trip to the Primera Division playoffs in city history, begin a two-week training camp June 14 in Mazatlan. They return to play a June 30 friendly against Club America at Qualcomm Stadium.
The Xolos also are part of the Torneo de Copa, Mexico’s rejuvenated domestic cup. They drew into a group with Merida, Celaya and Pumas, opening July 24 at home against Merida.
