Drunk driving is another story but still do-able...You're looking at $40-100 depending on where you get caught and how drunk you are. If it's a check point then you're screwed...I would never offer money cause there's just too many cops around...

I gave up a twenty at a check point. The cop speaking perfect English was flashing his "breathalizer" with a big smile suggesting a huge fine and vehicle impoundment if I chose the test and failed. So of course I chose to make it go away. With only two beers well over an hour before, I was still too spooked to take that chance.

20 yesterday--no seat belt on. Didn't matter that everyone driving around him also had none on. I am so beginning to hate these jerks. There has to be something we can do. I just have no idea what or how.

 Wow, they actually got you on that. I didn't think they gave a damn. The cop sounded hungry probably.
I too hate it went they pull us over for something everyone else appears to be doing, esp. right under his nose! :x

I once got nabbed for quote "Driving with one hand".

I was in Centro at a stoplight and I had reached over and put my right arm around my wife while we were stopped at the stoplight and in heavy traffic. (this was a full size pickup with a bench seat, BTW).

A cop walked up to my window and told me he would have to fine me and that I was in big trouble... he even opened up a little code book and showed me a drawing of a person driving with one hand. laugh.gif

I got kinda upset and told him we were at a light and I also started pointing out other drivers only holding on to their steering wheels with one hand (just about every other car within eyesight) and if he would be giving fines to all those outlaws...

He offered to make my problem go away for a little mordida... but I insisted he write me a ticket, which he ended up doing and that I never paid...

And all of this happened while I was still stuck in traffic waiting for one traffic light...

I always laugh when I remember that one.

I would never pay a mordida for anything bogus like driving with one hand, etc. I do always drive with a seatbelt since it is a good idea to start with and you will pay a hefty fine north of the border if you are caught driving without one. If the cop insists just have him give you a ticket. Most often they won't. I have said it before and I will say it again - your potential for a negative experience with cops here in Tijuana is inversely proportional to your Spanish language ability.

As a side note, Rosarito Beach has commissioned a new tourist police unit in addition to 300 civilian tourist monitors in the community to help prevent such abuse. Whenever anyone of these monitors sees a cop pulling over a car with foreign plates they will stop and assist. They have ID to show to the cop to authorize their involvement and will introduce themselves to the tourist, providing translation services as well as insuring nothing crooked is taking place.

The program is already being heralded a great success and I take my hat off to the hundreds of volunteers who are so giving of their time and efforts to make the coastal area a better place for all of us. Tijuana is looking to institute a similar program. The logistics are on a larger scale and more complicated but I sat in a meeting last week where they said they hope to have such a program in place by summer.

We have seen a very positive change in the Rosarito Beach area and hopefully that can carry over into Tijuana as well.

That could be true Scooby. What I have found lately is that many of the more "enterprising" cops have worked on improving their English language ability which also increases their income potential. I am sure that some do it as a means to help the tourist but realistically we know that a certain percentage have less than noble motives.

The times I have had such BS encounters I always portray a very polite yet firm demeanor and insist that we converse in Spanish. My experience has been that nearly 100% of the time the officer will back down and walk away when he cannot put the fear of God into me that I have to go to the station with him or get towed. Just last week I did indeed run a red light and the officer waiting in front of the bus ahead (out of sight) had me hands down. I simply insisted on a ticket and paid the small fine the next day.

In the US the same experience would have cost me probably a few hundred dollars and go on my driving record. I think I will take my odds here...

I've been stopped just a few times and been given a ticket once for speeding. It wasn't a big deal and never was asked for any money. I paid by mail and that was that.

If he has done nothing wrong then your husband should simply call their bluff. This is the MO of the TJPD. As soon as they realize that they cannot intimidate you into giving them money they usually give up and leave. They are really just bullies with uniforms and I never back down to a bully.

I agree. I was stopped in Puerto Vallarta a year ago for speeding at a checkpoint. Although I was not speeding. The cop wanted us to go to the police station to pay the fine. When I told him that when we got there I would be speaking to his boss, he let me go. Police will never bully me, whether they be American or Mexican. If a cop in TJ stops me and tries to get a bribe I already know what I will tell them. I will tell them that they have a choice. They can either let me go with no bribe, or, they can ticket me, tow me, arrest me, whatever, and that I will tell their superiors how they tried to get a bribe out of me.

I could be wrong but it seems like these guys want easy targets-Scared tourists or native Mexicans who are accustomed to paying bribes and afraid of hefty fines that they may have trouble paying. Of course their easiest targets are people who are actually guilty of breaking the law.

Tijuana will never change and become safer until citizens stop playing into police corruption by paying "mordita" rates.

and for the guy who posted about what bribe to pay for drunk driving. Not only can you kill innocent people, but I have seen the way people drive in TJ, and would think that you would want to be as alert as possible while driving to protect yourself as well.

My wife has gotten me out of every ticket and police encounter that I have been in with her...The last time the flashing red and blues became a reality..I got out of running a red light because...."She had diarrea and she needed to go to the bathroom." The cop looked at her then looked at me and busted up laughing and just motioned us to go....

My baby thinks fast....

I have driven in Tijuana a lot compared to most Americans. I had an Audi A4 with Mexico D.F. plates and then a Benz C300 with California plates. I got pulled over for making an illegal u-turn (everybody was doing that to get to the "short-cut" part of the San Ysidro border. I had been renting a car that time and I showed her only $8 in my wallet and she accepted it.

I have never gotten pulled over for anything remotely as bogus as some of the statements above!

$40.00.

I NEVER GET PULLED OVER AND I DRIVE ALOT IN TJ, but the one time I have four Tsingtao Beers at the China Festival on Revolucion is the one time I get stopped in Zona Centro, WHAT THE!!!??? I was stopped at a light when the cop drove by comming down the opposite way and turned around, got beside me and signaled for me to pull over. He says he did it because of my plates and that I should've had it imported. HOW DID HE KNOW TO GET ME ON THAT VERY DAY?

I never get pulled over in TJ and much less bribe, but when your a little buzzed, you have to do what you have to do. I WILL NEVER DRINK and DRIVE IN TJ OR ANYWHERE ELSE AGAIN. angry.gif
