I know of some folks who in the last year have begun installing low cost GPS tracking systems in their cars. If stolen they go and find their car themselves and either call the cops once located or just drive it away if accessible. The idea that your car is "chopped up" or sold off immediately is not what usually happens. Most likely it is held for days or weeks until a buyer is found or they can get to it to pull parts. Most chop shops have a backlog of cars they are working on so being able to locate the car within 12 hours is crucial. I know of one who actually recovered their car this way in Tijuana right before Christmas.

But what do I know...

That's a great idea do you know anyone that sells them and does instillation ? I am guessing you have to hide the unit fairly well right?
I love TJ!

I will ask them where they got it. I remember they told me that the installation instructions give many possible locations for the unit so as to make it hard for car thieves to easily detect them. The other benefit of such a system is that you can easily transfer it from one car to another. Come to think of it you could probably make one yourself. Buy one of the cell phones today that come with a GPS tracking option, put it on a cheap/family plan and just wire it into the cars 12 volt system via an adapter. Hide it somewhere that it is not easily visible and you would have such a system, right?

Or am I missing something obvious???

quick look at google for gps traking in mexico device is around $400 , some may be slightly lower / higher cost..can be tracked using a computer..some companies do have monthly service plans as per google search..

cell phones will do it but i believe you will need a law enforcement involvement + cell phone company cooperation.

As far as law enforcement involvement that would generally be good advice as you don't know what you face when you locate the car. The advantage is that you can track it down yourself and get the police involved once you've located it. You don't need their help or involvement for that.

As far as the cell phone, I know Nextel now offers the GPS locating service of the cell unit in their plans on certain phones. I am going to check it out...

Side Story: Once a boss of mine here in San Diego had his Jeep Cherokee stolen in Sorrento Valley. A couple days later he had a call from an auto painting place in Chula Vista saying he left his briefcase in the car and does he want to pick it up. He called the police to tell them where his car was. They told him they couldn't do anything about it. (!)

That was very frustrating for him of course. His insurance paid for the car.

I can't answer for him. Paranoid or coward, not sure. I would have tried if it were my car.

If you have a nice car and it is stolen or totaled, you will not get anywhere the real value from your insurance.

I would have gone back for my briefcase if nothing else. That would take me several months to replace all the information and data...

Violence in San Diego! Stay out of San Diego. It's not safe for anyone.

Overnight Shooting Leaves One Dead, One Wounded

SAN DIEGO -- Police are investigating a shooting on Saturday that killed a man and wounded his female companion in San Diego's Chollas View area.

The woman called police at 3:28 a.m. to report the shooting in the 5500 block of Seifert Street, said Lt. Manny Guaderrama of the San Diego Police Department.

The two victims were transported to a local trauma center where the man died and the woman was treated for gunshot wounds and was expected to survive, Guaderrama said.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victims were sitting in a parked car on Seifert Street when an older, dark-colored pickup truck pulled up alongside them, and someone inside began firing, Guaderrama said.

There has been so much talk on here about how the US media has been bashing TJ about the violence that I wanted to show that they do the same thing about San Diego and everywhere else.

Bad news sells. Good news doesn't.

Violence in the USA! Stay out of the USA.

Man Robbed Of Tacos At Gunpoint

FONTANA, Calif. -- A hunger for carnitas nearly led to some carnage after a Fontana man was robbed of a bag of tacos at gunpoint.

Police Sgt. Jeff Decker says the 35-years-old victim had just bought about $20 in tacos from a street-corner stand Sunday night and was bicycling home when the robber confronted him and said "Give me your tacos."

Decker says the robber grabbed the bag of food, punched the victim in the face and began to flee.

When the victim demanded his tacos back, the robber pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the man and threatened to kill him before running away.
