Who likes Tijuana?

No negatives or petty whining needed here, please.

I like it here! It does not even feel like I am in a different country than US*.

Germany and Vietnam were different countries, for sure, not to mention a few others.

Today is Saturday and the young girls are out playing futbol (soccer) in their organized , sponsored, coached leagues again; gee! just like kids in the US; except, of course they have only concrete to play on; not the manicured grass. And I do not hear them complaining. Just smiles.

I live in maybe an upper middle class area near Zona Rio and yes, fairly new cars and schools and friendly people, trees; a lot of educated people and they speak English better than I speak Espanol. Just common good folk. All the kids I see have smiles on their faces and are always friendly, finero.

The same school kids who work at Ley have to have B+ grades to work there. Always tip them Ryu and the seniors as well; hope you are doing that now; that’s their only pay; and on the penny thing, pennies*? who needs stinking pennies? Give them to the baggers, very simple and it does work both ways; many times I am short 3 cents or whatever and it’s fine. Another example of too much whining about nothing.

Someone said ugly. Have you been to Barcelona, Spain, southern Italy? Brown, all brown. There are trees all over here. You should have seen it in 1972 when I first came here! It has improved and catching up fast!!!

My neighbor brought over some home cooked real pancakes this morning as I was doing some bacon and eggs. McDonalds? NO Thanks!

Let’s see what else? I get into Senor Frog’s free on Ladies Night (not a TV; I know the Mgr. I am the suave gentleman(?) ).

Haircuts are cheap, Milky; but my barber is not on Revo, but he’s on the way to Zona Norte. smile.gif

Rent is cheaper here. So are Cigarros and some drugs I heard, but go to a real local store like Gigante, not those 50% Discount paces. And then, aspirin in US is still cheaper.

I do miss the frozen food section selection though. Nothing like Stouffer’s cream chipped beef or Lasagna. Even TV dinners! ? And I am not crazy over the fresh meat here, like even hamburger and much less over the filet mignon. No flavor.

Due to some fellow Blogers informing me, I do realize that some US people are here because they can not go back because of arrest warrants, so you good guys out there, be careful. Most people here, after the criminal sector, are retirees, like me or married to a locals; according to info from other Blogers.

*There could be more Mexicans in US than in Tijuana?

* If you are a nuisistmistc or whatever they are called, coin collector, I have found a wheat back penny (ca1952) and a buffalo nickel; no Indian Head penny yet, but seems like a lot of old US coins are in Mexico. Some people complain about small change like their life depended on it; I find it an opportunity to find something new and maybe valuable; guess my glass is more than half full.

That’s about it, but I know I like Tijuana best for the friends I met here and even some through the Blog, imagine that! Everyday common Mexican local people mostly; but I do get a kick about some close -by Americans that think their s*** don’t stink or something; won’t even say ‘hello’; ignorance is everywhere, I guess. Life is what YOU make it!

Will the comments fly??? :-) I do not think I really PO’d anyone, except maybe the criminals???

Oh! Ferarris and McLarens split the first four positions for tomorrow’s Spanish Formula One Grand Prix with the BMW following. It’s on at 5am Sunday on Speed Channe26.

Tijuana is more than Revolution; there’s Zona Norte too!

((Sorry Milky, I’ve been thinking about that for a long time.) I got news for you. There are street/bar girls in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Paris, New York, etc, sex sells; just watch the ads in your daily major paper or TV.)

And when Milky opens a NEW topic on a next Blog V get-together, I want to see a better response/input; like I miss you guys???? Not! biggrin.gif

OH! Milky! Happy Second Anniversary of the Blog! (Sorry, I forgot that.)

Rich:

Thanks for the post. It is so easy to see the negative instead of the positive. Like you, I prefer to focus on all that this wonderful place has to offer. I have made many, many good friends, met the love of my life, find every day to be something special and have no plans whatsoever of going back. Life is what you make it...

I love it here. The more time I spend in Tijuana, the more I like it.

Hey man, I'm just trying to be fair and balanced like Fox News. laugh.gif

By the way it's really only the chorizo tacos that can do a number on me.

Oh wait, this is the "likes" thread ... ok I love how cheap the chorizo tacos are.

Well, I differ on the Zona Norte issue. I imagine that in the Netherlands, the sex industry is a bit more regulated with less delinquency, but I could be wrong.

One doesn´t have to be in a middle class to upscale area like Zona Rio to appreciate the good that there is in Tijuana....

...Anyways.... one thing I like about Tijuana:

That no matter where you live, you are a short distance from a place to buy the four convenience store food groups: milk, bread, beer, cigarettes... along with tortillas...chorizo..

In the US many neighorhoods are like 2 miles from the nearest anything.

Until you leave Tijuana and California itself, you really don't know how good you have it. TJ is not the most beautiful city, many have and do consider it a very ugly city. But there is a energy to it that many sterile places in the US do not have, especially where I am right now.

I'll tell you the truth, I miss TJ. My favorite restuarants, the carefree life I lead there, even the friendships I left behind. TJ made us gringos stick together more. When you leave TJ, you left that and are jsut one among millions.

So enjoy TJ while you still have it. Coming back and living in the states is a culture shock. laugh.gif

My father, from Texas, came to visit me last spring break and was impressed with Tijuana. He was, however, comparing it to the Mexican cities on the border in Texas (Reynosa, Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, Piedras Negras, Progreso) which he was familiar with.
I have been to those cities many times, as I grew up in San Antonio, and compared to those cities and towns Tijuana is very nice with more of a metropolitan feeling.

Some people expect to see third world conditions such as Malawi or Haiti when they come down here. Heh Heh It is a good idea to clarify to people who are afraid of being mobbed for their money wherever they go that Mexico is a middle income country with a large and complex economy and that most of the people in Tijuana lead full lives like you and I.

Okay...it somewhat happens sometimes...occassionally with the downtown denizens. What is most ironic is that in the poorer neighborhoods hardly anybody has bugged me or asked for money, but when I am downtown or in Zona Rio more people come up asking for money…....in a more affluent district. ....Some of you all should try it some day. Walk down Ruta Hidalgo in Mariano Matamoros towards the big huge Sobreruedas in Florido. You will be left in peace a lot more that walking downtown. On the plus side the people you do converse with will be a bit more genuine.

They passed up on Plaza Rio and wanted to see Rosarito - they were ready to buy property that instant! laugh.gif

I agree also - I spend most of my time in Col Obrera 1ra seccion and just blend in with the local scene.

Hey lets keep this one towards the top of the list. The "Sick of Tijuana" thread is kind of a glaring eyesore. ....Maybe we can create a "pet peeves" thread. I love Tijuana....but at the same time there are a some annoying things that are manageable and many times avoidable that can be published, so newcomers can prepare and have it easier than many of us did when faced with situations.

"Who is sick of Tijuana" is on the exact opposite end of the optimism spectrum from "Pollyanna". Lets deal with stuff objectively.

Of course...if someone has had a genuine horror story, do mention.....but such stuff shouldn´t be constantly the first thing newcomers see.

I have to respectfully disagree ... if newcomers were not made aware off the bat of things to look out for south of the border, maybe they wouldn't stumble upon them so easily. I say we stay fair and balanced (like Fox News) and keep both threads going.

I love how people always say "good day" and "good afternoon" and "good night" ... especially on the calafias. Can you imagine if some guy got on the morning rush hour 1st ave bus in New York and said, "good morning!" He would get his ass kicked. laugh.gif
