We signed a contract today! We're moving into our new house next week--but first we need to buy a refrigerator, washer and dryer. We have been told that the free road to Rosarito is a good place to look for used appliances. Does anyone have experience/advice on buying appliances this way--or any other suggestions? We are moving to Hacienda del Mar, right off the toll road just 10 min north of Rosarito.

That's my question, too.  When I start moving my stuff, it'll be on weekdays, because sometimes I work weekends, so I'll need to take of as much as possible on the weekdays.  Are there any actual appliance stores in TJ?

Hello Tijuana Hopeful,

I was shocked when I first moved out here and found that the appliance stores were 20 to 50 percent more expensive than the US. Buy used appliances and most will have a warranty on them.

Coppel is one of the largest and have credit plans as well.

Elektra is another major chain.

lol, yeah the major appliance stores here, being Costco, coppel, sears, sams, walmart are all rip-offs when it comes to appliances.

That's why we stuck to swapmeets, or craigslist.

but yes that swap meet is only on weekends.  there are other swap meets that happen during the week.  but since I work during the week, I cannot help you on when and where those happen.  do a search for swap meets on the forum.  maybe something will come up.

Dumb question - for going to the swap meet on the weekends for appliances, do sellers take USD, pesos or both?

We bought a used refrigerator through an applicance repairman who buys and resells appliances. His name is David Capuchino and we got the rec from Baja Nomad. We got a 28" fridge that looks like new for $180. Included delivery and a 3 month warranty.

Baed on the general advice I have been given, most folks will take both, but you will often do better paying in pesos.

Is that 28"  high, 28" wide or 28cu?

How many cubic feet is it? I may be better off going to the swap meet, they may have more of a selection, and I'll probably need a stove, too.

It is 5'x28"x28". Basically if you tell David the size and color you want, he will try to find it for you. In our case, we just told him no wider than 28" because nothing wider would fit in our kitchen.

If you want to browse and have the time, the swap meet is probably best. If you want to just tell someone what you need and have them find it for you and deliver it to your door, I recommend David. He can find what you need, but it may take a few days. He also got us a washer and dryer--it took him 5 days to get both and deliver them to us. We paid a total of $390 for both machines, delivery, installation (incl conversion from electric to gas) and a 3 month warranty. We didn't mind waiting a few days to get them, since it saved us the time of having to go shopping ourselves. And we liked the idea of buying from someone who can also repair them (as well as any other appliances that need fixing). Now he is working on our dishwasher (which came with the place but doesn't work) and our stove (which works ok, but a couple of the burners sputter so he is trying to locate a new part for us).

That sounds like it's about 14cuft, which is what mine is.  I measured mine, and it's 5'28"x29."  Do you have his contact information?  I won't be going to look for a place until mid-August, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared, since I'll have to buy a stove, also.  A washer and dryer I don't need, I prefer to go to the Laundromat.

David's number: 0456611064862.

Are you going to go to the laundromat in San Diego or TJ? I have heard that laundromats in TJ are very expensive (though have not researched/verified this myself).

I'll be taking my laundry with me when I go to San Diego every weekend.  I'll check BajaNomad to see if David has a email address or US phone number.  I won't be getting a Mexican cell phone unless I have to.  I'm on an extremely tight budget, especially since my job lost a very large contract, which means less work for me and over 1000 other people.
