Hello, I am moving to San Antonio Del Mar in a few weeks. I am american and plan on commuting daily. I would like to hear what you know about the safety of the community. I am a woman and will be coming alone. Will I really need to pay duty on my things when I move over? Does anyone feel like teaching me Spanish. Will also need a handyman. All suggestions are welcome and apperciated. Thanks. Amber

Hi Pixxiestiks, and Welcome!
I personally do not know much about San Antonio Del Mar but I am pretty sure that you will find someone on this Blog who does.
One humble word of advice. Although it is mostly relatively safe here please be careful about advertising the fact that you are a woman coming alone. Alot of us are women and alot of us are by ourselves at one time or another, or all the time but.... although you can trust some people, you have to be careful with others. just like anywhere in the States be aware of your surroundings and the info that you give out.
That being said...If you go thru some of the previous posts you may find answers to some of your questions.
Good Luck and Happy Moving!

Welcome! I think you will find this blog very helpful! As far as paying a duty, I think it depends on your luck. I paid with my first load across, they asked for $20 dollars and I had only $11 on me so they settled for that. After about the 3rd load, they stopped checking my stuff and just waved me through. I had read on here that others had done it in several trips spread out over time so not to pay, but I had to make 11 trips in three days and only paid a total of $15 for all my stuff.

Good luck with everything, I hope you love your new home!

Welcome Amber. SADM is nice. I have a friend who lives there and I have thought about moving there myself. My problem would be the daily commute. Maybe if my job was a little closer to the border I could do it. I am sure you will enjoy it.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I have heard in light of the ridiculous arizona law that americans were being harassed in Mexico. Is this just another stupid rumor?

Hi,

I live in San Antonio Del Mar and its a very safe community very quiet and people are very nice who live there,

As far as a handy man, I can refer the guy who fixes stuff at my house. As far as movig things across, I had 4 van loads and always pulled in to the declare gate and only had to pay 20 dollars one time ......

If you have any other questions please feel free to message me !

Oh and if you commute it would be a good idea to register with the toll booth so you get half off toll

Hi Aleman.
Did you have to go to the first toll booth or the one near Rosarito?
Thanks.

I think wicho is asking if that is where you registered? It's not beyond Mexico to make you go all the way across town to get the toll booth pass.

Oooops !    No the little office is just before you get to the first Toll Booth going south on the left side .....it says IAVE on it.  They give you an application and send you to another office in Playas to register.

I did before think that San Antonio Del Mar  didn't have anything wrong with it, until my aunt had me check on her house and i found that her gate was knocked down, someone also unscrewed the door handles off of the front door and the mail box was missing. The Gard's came and asked me what was i doing there because i was taking the rest of my aunts stuff out of the house so no one could still it since they already broke in (I'm thinking in my head where were the Gard's then when someone was trying to break in if there is 24 hr security). I am on the lease for the house, i had the contract on me, gave them the phone number to my aunt, to call her and i showed them everything that had happen to the house. They did not do nothing about it they just said ya that happened to a lot of houses and went back up. Yes it is gated but i have never once when i lived there tell now been asked where i was going they would always just let me and anyone else right in. I thought in gated committees they are suppose to ask before they just let you in unless they recognized you. I was very unhappy about that today and wouldn't recommend anyone to move there more then anywhere else. I now don't live in a gated committee and feel just the same as i did there. So everywhere you go u always have to have your eye open just incase. sad.gif

Most of the time it is the guard giving tips to the people that rob the places. Sorry that happened.

Sorry there was a break-in San Antonio Del Mar. Shows that break-ins can occur in gated communities.

My friends that live there say usually the guards will let any American looking person in, no questions asked. They stop and question Mexicans.

My friends have lived there for 4 years, no problems with crime. They are only there 20% of the time.

We have found the only way to have all your stuff at the end of everyday is have someone always at home.
We don't even go shopping with out one of the boys at our house.
Everyone seems to get robbed, at some point. Sucks

The sad part of Mexico is the theft and no police NO F****NG HONEST POLICE
They don't even talk about the possibility of a non corrupted police force.
The answer they like to use is the Army.......
Army for police work hasn't ever worked effectively anywhere in the world, what makes us think it will work here?

Business accomplishment here translates to you or part of your family getting robbed or kidnapped at some-point.
Of course if you make enough money you can hire full time guards, they have to be off duty police now to carry guns.
Problem is 30% of the time after they interrogate your security after a family kidnapping it turns out to be a inside job.
Once again it pays to hire a family member.

PS
I am happier when I don't think about it.
That is what most gringos do.
We like to tell the story that if your not involved in drugs nothing will happen to you.
LOL laugh.gif laugh.gif right a criminal can't spend money he didn't take from a drug dealer.. tongue.gif
That story got started by a Realtor that had nothing to gain by telling you it's safe here! laugh.gif laugh.gif [except maybe a commission]

Sasha most of the better neighborhoods are targeted and George is right most security guards get paid very little money and will get kickbacks from thieves for good info.
