I am so tired of hearing about the USA reporting crimes in Roarito. There has not been a murder this year. I feel completely safe here and would not live anywhere else. Of course if Americans come over and deal with drugs , they may get themselves in trouble. Rosarito is a great town with freindly people and great beaches. Just wanted to get that off my chest.......PS: I noticed the USA does not tell how many drug related homisides happen in USA. I know its higher than the 5000 in Mexico.

It seems American viewers cannot get enough of crime in Mexico. CNN just did another special on crime in Rosarito. rolleyes.gif

Pretty sensationalist, interspersing images of spring break with corpses, etc. Interesting how they are reporting on fear based on misconception while generating it. Seems like job security. I wonder if he told the girls at the beach he was interviewing all his crime stories before asking them if they wanted to stay in Rosarito. That seemed very staged.

I've been to la playa in Rosarito a few times recently and found it nice and quiet, maybe more so with no other gringos around. I love going to Rosarito, it is a beautiful town and has a lot to enjoy, nice drive on the toll road too.

The gringo media is just seizing upon the opportunity of the national financial "crisis" up there to scare people into spending their money at home instead of down here. If most tijuanenses were really threatened of being in harms way and stepping over corpses all the time, Tijuana and Rosarito would be deserted.

I give the guy credit, he's actually down there reporting which the gringo media usually does not do... most news on TJ and Baja is what I call "secondhand" news where... KUSI, for example, reports on something reported to them... but they never send a reporter down or anyone to actually investigate on what's really happening... and if it is a live report on TJ they usually cover it from San Ysidro.

Well it must be nice to live in such a crime free zone (NOT)
I live here and crime is under reported if anything.
If you want to know the truth ask your priest or pastor, they get the pleas for prayers.
The kidnappings continue right now as I type,

If you don't want to recognize the fact that crime is rampant here in Mexico.
Well that's OK. I have always admired positive thinkers, but this is not the time or the place.

But I am going to give my opinion which I have been holding back, watching the posts.

I have noticed that the people who seem to say there is no crime have something to gain by tourists or gringo dollars,
1. Real estate, salesman, developers, or just owners
2. Hotel owners
3. Restaurant owners
4. Politician that really is a business man
5.etc...........$$$ from tourists

Well I think we have done ourselves a very large disservice by.
1.Whistling in the wind (sometimes called hiding our gringo head in the sand),if I didn't see it Ill tell everyone it's OK so it must be OK right
2.Blame it on the cartels, by the way if they legalize drugs criminals will still be criminals just something different.
3.Turning a blind eye on corruption at ANY LEVEL,example paying a small bribe on the street, laughing and saying that's how it is.

What the disservice is now we have a very large battle ahead and we really do have crime out of control,
The government that hasn't done anything about it, Yet

Houses that at one time worth 350K, you now have to sell to a Mexican that can't cross, and most them know you can build a 1500 to 1800 sq ft house for under 55k

Now the economy is really suffering
The boarder crossing looks like its going to get longer,
The excuse is looking for guns, and drug money.
It has more to do with the 17% import tax now that the economy is in the toilet

The guns will cross the way they always have, small pieces, or bribe to custom official($500.00-1200.00per truck)

The truth will get rid of the crime.
Lying may get you a sale today but long term look what we have. Crime and Fewer tourists.

DaveinTJ,

Do you live in TJ or Rosarito?

I for one have no problems walking around Rosarito by myself from place to place and have not seen incidents out sorts."yeah my friend had her car broken into happens all the time in the states" In matter of fact I even bar hop from bar to bar via walking and have yet to have a problem.

I guess I don't understand what dangers lurk in the wild west of Rosarito but I for one will continue life as usual and continue to tell people that they can come and enjoy a trip here with little worries as long as they keep their nose clean biggrin.gif . I'm not a Realtor, Restaurateur or a Politician. As far as the houses being worth 350k at one time LOL welcome to the bubble.

Had a great time at the little circus here last Thursday and followed it up with a Lucha Libre match on Saturday across from the rodeo grounds here in Rosarito. If any of you attended I was the tall drunk gringo cool.gif .. I guess I wont be sticking my head in the sand but will continue to stick it on the chopping block according to your post.. I guess I refuse to believe the scare mongers.

I am a retired person living in Rosarito. I do not own anything or work and I have not seen any crime in Rosarito. Look at the USA and all its crime. You talk about officers taking bribes, well look at the officers charged with rape when stopping a car in the USA. cops take money under the table all the time in the USA just like they do here in Mexico. You talk about housing. A house that sold for $500,000 in Las Vegas now sells for under $200,000. See the economy is bad everywhere. I live here as I can afford to live on the beach in a gated and secure neighborhood which I cannot do at any beach community in California. Look in your own backyard before you start running down someone elses.

I've been here since early June '08. I have yet to encounter any situation in which I felt threatened. That said, I am also aware that "crime" is a reality no matter where you choose to live. My frame of reference is living here versus living in California's state capitol, Sacramento, where on a regular basis I found myself scared to sit in a public park in broad daylight (found myself right smack dab in the middle of warring homeless drunks with knives); on public transportation with gropers and feelers; walking one block from where Schwartzenegger works and seeing meth addicts in the fits of addiction; being haggled regularly for money or cigarettes and if I didn't respond in kind, being verbally assaulted to the point of fear.

'Nuff said. I think you get my picture. Wouldn't dream of changing anything, especially where I live now.

Gotta ask the most logical follow-up question - if you are so convinced that it is much safer in the US and that is a big concern for you, why are you living in MX? huh.gif

Yes I ask the same question? Why are you in Mexico? Sounds like you should move to a safe place like New Orleans or Detroit. I am sure you would feel safer there.
Sometimes we need to take a step back and look at ourselves. Maybe we don't have good neighbors because of something we are doing. I find the people in my community are all nice and would feel safe having them watch my place when I am gone. They have done that several times for me and nothing has ever been missing.

There could be a world of difference between Rosarito and Tijuana. There are a lot of people that live in Tijuana and are scared and want to get the hell out if they could.

You know there are dangerous cities in every country you live in. TJ may be more dangerous than Rosarito. There are pleny of safe places in Mexico. Just like the USA. In Las Vegas you feel safe in the southwest area but you never go to North Las Vegas unless you like to dodge bullets. In Yew York you feel safe in Long Island but try Harlem or lower east side of Manhattan. In California you feel safe in Santa Barbara but scared of Watts. Same thing in England, Asia or anywhere else in the world. We make choices on where we wish to live. I personally enjoy Rosarito. Its a close knit community where people are nice and respect one another. I feel totally safe here. I know people who live in San felipe, San Quinton, La Paz and Cabo who all feel safe and secure and enjoy where they live. Enjoy life and peace to everyone.

I live in Rosarito and go out at nite all the time.. El Torito , El Rancho, Vinces, Casa Blanco, Rosarito Beach hotel, hell almost any and every resturant or bar in town just depends on the night and I even walk dont drive so its about as safe a place for me as anywhere else I guess.

Sounds like you live in a place that makes you feel unsafe. You should move...

Some people like Drama and like to build up what isnt really there the truth is any city in the world has its dangerous areas and Crime in many areas San Diego for example is certainly worse than here in Rosarito like anywhere common sense is needed park ion the main streets in well lit areas dont walk at night in areas you dont know
I lived in the Golden Hills area of San Diego some years back and got hit by 3 00 buck pellets when the rival gang did a drive by on the guy standing out front of a 7/11
The point of the conversation was is it safe in Rosarito not TJ we all know what goes on in TJ it has been that way for decades and isnt going to change anytime soon and as cheap as rents are down here why wouldnt you live in a gated community?
Rosarito is as safe as 50% of San Diego tongue.gif

Just thought I'd chime in... I have been living here for approximately 1 month now, and have had my purse stolen (green card and all ID gone, so now I have to pay close to $400 to replace my green card before I can cross) and 3 days later we had our truck stolen and luckily recovered. If we had arrived any later, even 5-10 seconds the truck would have been gone and never recovered. Now it sits in front of our house with no front rims because the jerk that stole it drove it off-road while being chased by the cops. He blew both front tires and completely destroyed the rims.. We are still not sure what other damage has been done to the suspension. I do like it here though, the cost of living makes it worth the risk.. and I have just learned some big lessons. Now I know I just have to be paranoid all the time smile.gif
