I just got a IBM thinkpad and was wondering if I can use it in Mexico? I do not have internet as yet. When I turned it on this weekend If found many networks with no password but was unable to log on to them. I am not really good with things like this. If anyone can help!

No reason you shouldn't be able to use it in Mexico. You may see networks with no password around you, but they also need DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) enabled for you to be able to access them easily. Otherwise it's either get you own service or learn some hacking.

I have a little wireless network locating sensor on a keychain I carry with me. It gives me relative network strength and whether the network is secured or not. Quite handy for catching my email and the latest and greatest on the blog when I am running around town...

Ok I plan to get my own internet, but since I was there I tried. My neighbor says he does this all the time. I have no idea what dynamic host configurtion protocal is. Thanks

DHCP is essentially what gives you the IP address automatically if you are configured to get it as such. Even if there is no password required, without an IP address you can't do anything. If there is no DHCP it means the computers on that network generally have hardwired addresses. You can try common ones to see if you hit on an available one but that gets into the hacking realm. Ask your neighbor what his configuration is since he is able to connect. When I was living in Zona Rio this is what I did for connections.

I tried this at work to see if I could even get on and it said I was connected. To what I am guessing some system close by, but when I went to try to search something on the internet I could not. Said cannot find server. I am so confused. I have read, asked and did just about everything but I am still unable to log on.

I guess it would be best to just purchase your own monthly internet...I "hack" into other's internet on/off all the time...it's really not that difficult...I don't even mess with that DHCP you guys were talking about!!!

I have found its hard to find unsecured wireless access points in TJ since most people keep theirs secure.

I saw on the news how Mexico City is planning on having free wireless access for the entire city. Maybe TJ will follow

If you don't mess with it and don't have to manually set your IP then it is already running on the servers you are connecting to. I think I confused the issue by bringing it up. Never mind. What time is it?

Can we use the free hotspots that are listed for Tijuana? Just a thought, and again since I am still trying to figure all this out. My husband called and we now have internet thru Cablemas, I hope I can figure out how to use it.

There is a place on calle 4ta between constituccion and revoluccion where I connect all the time.

I have several laptops and they all work fine on both sides of the border.

When I am in the states I just find a hotel that has wireless for the hotel and connect there.

I also leave my wireless modem unsecured to further the free network I enjoy

I'm glad that made u laugh...even though I can't spell "weird" sometimes...

I do the same thing as far as Hotel hot spots are concerned. There is a great one off Dairy Mart Road...the hotel next to Cocos and Carls Jr is great!!! All you gotta do is agree to their terms and conditions as if you were staying at the hotel...TOO EASY!!! I just hope they don't read this!!!

I actually had an Asner when I thought about a whole line of cars slowing down someone's internet connection at their house.

The Super 8 motel at Rosecrans and Midway has a decent connection

and

The Holiday Inn on Sports Arena blvd.'s Internet connection is good in the back parking lot near Midway Dr. (they too have a little click to agree to the terms and your online. Funny thing is they don't show you the terms that I noticed anyway.)

There is also a Taco Bell on Midway with offices around it where there are several open connections

You know, as GC suggested, I think that it would be a great idea to start a thread on this subject...many of us have laptops and we all know that every now and then we just need to check our email or even worse---tijuanablog.com!!!

I wonder if this is illegal though...anyone know?

At this time it is a grey area.

It is not illegal because they have not written any laws to prevent it.

If you go into someone else’s hard drive and access their files then that is VERY ILLEGAL

Yeah I guess it's about common sense, right? But since when are laws about common sense...I won't even go into that!!!

Logically we shouldn't park infront of someone's house to access the internet but if a hotel chain, restaurant or even a movie theathre is allowing this by not locking their signal then by all means we should use it while we can!!! Just my 2 pesos...
